British League, Regular Season, Game 28: March 28-30, 2008
The Newcastle Eagles moved within one victory of clinching the British Basketball League Championship on Friday after recording an 82-68 win over Marshall MK Lions. The Eagles improved to 25-4 and can be caught by only one team, the defending champion Guildford Heat, who beat BiG Storage Cheshire Jets 82-88 on Sunday to improve to 20-7. The Eagles and Heat are scheduled to duel next Sunday, but that game could be moot if Newcastle beats Everton Tigers on Friday or if Guildford loses to last place Team Birmingham Panthers on Saturday. Lynard Stewart scored 18 to lead Newcastle over Marshall in a game that wasn’t decided until the hosts went on a 12-2 fourth-quarter run. The Heat had a tougher time against the Jets, finally pulling away with a 0-7 spurt in the closing minutes. Danny Gilbert paced the Heat with 19, Mike Martin added 18 and EJ Harrison scored 13. Kularoos Plymouth Raiders remained strong in the battle for second place after trouncing the Jets 90-75 on Friday as Andrew Lasker netted 30 and Birmingham 90-122 on Saturday behind Gavin Love’s 34. In other games, the Sheffield Sharks beat Everton 104-81, Jelson Homes DMU Leicester Riders topped the Worcester Wolves 104-99 and PAWS London Capital overcame SAMG Verve Scottish Rocks 78-72.
