Player to Watch: Sergey Chikalkin
|
Sergey Chilkalkin is one of the best three-point shooters in ULEB Cup history and an important piece of the Unics Kazan attack. Chilkalkin, 32, is in his third straight season and fourth overall with Unics and he’s hoping that this will be the magic one that leads to ULEB Cup glory. The veteran shooting guard has an impressive history that has seen him play in the Euroleague Final Four, win the championships in the Russian, Italian and Ukrainian Leagues and compete at the Olympics, world and European championships with the Russian national team. Chilkalkin was also once named Russian League MVP. That wealth of experience not only makes him more dangerous, but it helps some of his younger teammates as well, preparing Unics for the battles that lay ahead at the Final Eight. In many ways Chilkalkin is a barometer for his team’s success; During the rgular season, he averaged 15.7 points in Unics’s wins, but less than half that (7.2 ppg.) in defeats. Unics is also 7-0 when he makes at least 3 three-pointers in a game over the past two seasons. Therefore, it seems clear that Unics will continue to use Chilkalkin’s shooting talents whenever possible in Turin as it targets the ULEB Cup crown.
