Spanish League, Game 29: April 5-6, 2008
Rudy Fernandez Real Madrid keeps dominating the Spanish League regular season and improved to 25-4, keeping a three-game lead ahead of everyone else by edging Ricoh Manresa 79-81 on the road on Sunday. Alex Mumbru led the winners with 18 points while Felipe Reyes posted a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds for Madrid. DKV Joventut stayed second with a 22-7 record and got ready for the ULEB Cup Final Eight by downing Tau Ceramica 78-66 in Badalona on Sunday. Rudy Fernandez paced the winners with 28 points on 6-for-7 two-pointers and 10-for-11 free throws. He led a 17-0 run that sealed the outcome in the final 8 minutes. AXA FC Barcelona is now third at 21-8 by topping ViveMenorca 74-64 at home on Sunday behind 16 points from Roger Grimau. Akasvayu Girona moved up to 16-13 by thrashing CB Granada 105-86 at home on Saturday with 25 points from Erik Daniels. Just as Akasvayu, Pamesa Valencia left no doubt about its good moment days before the ULEB Cup Final Eight by thrashing Cajasol 80-97 in Seville on Saturday. Shammond Williams and Albert Oliver paced the winners each with 20 points. Unicaja took a major step to reach the Spanish League playoffs by edging Kalise Gran Canaria 90-95 in overtime on the road on Sunday. In other games, iurbentia Bilbao Basket edged MMT Estudiantes 90-93, Grupo Capitol Valladolid topped Grupo Begar Leon 94-88 while Polaris World CB Murcia edged Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada 78-80.

DKV Joventut stayed second with a 22-7 record and showed its power right before its ULEB Cup quarterfinals showdown against Pamesa Valencia by downing Tau Ceramica 78-66 in Badalona on Sunday. Fernandez paced the winners with 28 points on 6-for-7 two-pointers and 10-for-11 free throws. Jan Jagla and Lubos Barton each added 10 for Joventut. Igor Rakocevic and Sergi Vidal led Tau with 12 points apiece. A three-pointer by Vidal gave Tau a 61-64 edge with 8 minutes to go, but that's when Joventut increased its defensive level. Tau would committ 10 turnovers in the next 7 minutes while Fernandez provided some showtime. He hit a mid-range jumper, added 4 free throws, a fast break dunk, a wild three-pointer and above all, a reverse alleyoop slam in a 17-0 run that sealed the outcome. AXA FC Barcelona is now third at 21-8 by topping ViveMenorca 74-64 at home on Sunday. Grimau led the winners with 16 points, Fran Vazquez added 15, Mario Kasun had 10 while Pepe Sanchez barely missed a triple-double with 6 points, 8 rebounds and 9 assists for Barcelona, that only led 45-43 midway through the third quarter. Grimau and Kasun stepped up to boost the hosts' lead to 63-49 with 8 minutes, enough to start thinking about the Euroleague Quarterfinal Playoffs game against Maccabi Elite. Akasvayu Girona moved up to 16-13 by thrashing CB Granada 105-86 at home on Saturday. Erik Daniels paced the winners with 25 points. Arriel McDonald added 17, Marc Gasol and Branko Cvetkovic had 15 apiece while Ivan Radenovic got 11 for Akasvayu. Cvetkovic and Daniels took over late in the third quarter to give their team a 83-66 lead and Granada did not recover.

Pamesa Valencia moved up to 18-11 by thrashing Cajasol 80-97 in Seville on Saturday. Shammond Williams and Albert Oliver paced the winners each with 20 points while Ruben Douglas, Ruben Garces and Dejan Milojevic added 11 apiece for Pamesa, that already led 20-34 after 10 minutes. Garces and an unstoppbale Williams allowed Pamesa to keep a 44-53 halftime edge. Cajasol got as close as 58-63 but Williams an Oliver stepped up to seal the outcome, 65-83, early in the fourth quarter. Unicaja took a major step to reach the Spanish League playoffs by edging Kalise Gran Canaria 90-95 in overtime on the road on Sunday. Unicaja improved to 16-13 while Gran Canaria dropped to 14-15. Boniface Ndong paced the winners with 16 points and 4 blocks. Berni Rodriguez added 15 points while Daniel Santiago and Carlos Jimenez each had 12 for Unicaja. Sitapha Savane had 22 points for Gran Canaria, Carl English added 15 while Marcus Norris and Roberto Guerra each got 12 for the hosts, that trailed 64-75 with over 4 minutes to go in regulation. English and Savane fueled the hosts' comeback while free throws by Norris brought the hosts within 77-79. More foul shots by Savane sent the game to overtime, 79-79. Jiri Welsch and Rodriguez fueled a 1-8 run that broke the game open, 80-87. Gran Canaria managed to get within 89-91 but free throws by Ndong and Bojan Popovic allowed Unicaja to escape with a win. Real Madrid stayed ahead everyone else at 25-4 by edging Ricoh Manresa 79-81 on the road on Sunday. Mumbru led the winners with 18 points, Reyes posted a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds while Kerem Tunceri got 10 points for Madrid, that trailed 66-65 with 8 minutes to go. Three-pointers by Iker Iturbe and Raul Lopez brought Madrid back to life, but Manresa got within 78-79. Mumbru made free throws with 5 seconds to go and Madrid opted to send Juan Espil to the line, who missed his second shot on purpose bu Blagota Sekulic grabbed the game-winning rebound.
