Greek League, Regular Season, Game 24: April 16, 2008
Sarunas Jasikevicius - Panathinaikos Panathinaikos and Olympiacos returned to their winning ways in Greek League Matchday 24. The Greens never trailed in an 84-74 win over Panionios as Sarunas Jasikevicius recorded a season-high of 28 points in 25 minutes. The Reds crushed AE Larissa 84-52, but the big news came when Sofoklis Schortsianitis entered the court after a 10-month absence due to conditioning problems. Schortsianitis scored 11 points in 12 minutes. The big excitement in Greece is at the bottom of the table where the battle to avoid relegation between PAOK, Kolossos Rhodes and AGO Rethymnon remains hot. PAOK grabbed a crucial 62-58 win over Panellinios as Giorgos Tsiakos scored 14 points and Mamadou Diarra added 13. Kolossos won too; beating Egaleo 92-89 behind a brilliant performance from Danilo Pinnock, who amassed 23 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 6 steals. AGO Rethymnon could not handle visiting Aris despite David Young nailing 22 points; Aris won 59-70 behind 18 points from Darius Washington and 16 from Reyshawn Terry. In other games, Maroussi beat AEK 71-62 thanks to 14 points from Jarod Stevenson, while Olympia Larissa smashed Olympiada Patras 96-67 with Fanis Koubouras leading five players in double digits totaling 16 points.

At OAKA Sports Hall, Panathinaikos never really managed to run away from Panionios, but the guests never really caused trouble for the Greens, either. In the end, Panathinaikos took an 84-74 victory as Sarunas Jasikevicius exploded for a season-high 28 points on 6 three-pointers, Mike Batiste added 11 points and Dimitris Diamantidis contributed 10 points, 5 boards and 4 assists. Former Green Lonny Baxter led Panionios with 15 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals, while Giannis Georgalis posted 14 points, Ivan Zoroski 13, Brad Newley 12 and Levon Kendall 11.

Olympiacos never had to push itself in order to beat AE Larissa 84-52 at Peace and Friendship Stadium as Panagiotis Vassilopoulos bagged 14 points and 7 boards. But the talk of the day was Sofoklis Schortsianitis’s return to action 10 months after his last appearance in a Greek League game. Schortsianitis remained sidelined all season due to conditioning problems before coach Giannakis offered him 12 minutes of playing time. Schortsianitis responsed with 11 points on 4-for-4 shooting. Big men Jake Tsakalidis and Giannis Bouroussis also scored 11, while Rod Blakney added 10. Dragan Ceranic and Billy Keys combined for 31 of Larissa’s 52 points. Aris was behind for three quarters in Rethymnon, but managed to escape from Crete with a 59-70 win over host AGOR. Darius Washington scored 18, Reyshawn Terry had 16 and Jeremmiah Massey finished with 14. David Young nailed 22 points for AGOR in defeat.
