Rudy Fernandez - DKV Joventut - Final Eight Turin 2008 Freshly crowned ULEB Cup champion DKV Joventut surged back into the race for first place in the Spanish League with a 93-101 road win at defending champion Real Madrid. Joventut set an ACB record with 18 three-pointers made, 8 of which came from Rudy Fernandez, who scored 30 points to lead Joventut as it improved to 23-7. Joventut now has two wins fewer than Madrid, but has the head-to-head tiebreaker in hand. Joventut also leads rival AXA FC Barcelona by one victory. Barcelona beat Final Four bound Tau Ceramica 77-81 on the road. Gianluca Basile and Alex Acker paced Barca with 13 points apiece. Akasvayu Girona surpassed Unicaja for seventh place with a 65-71 win in Malaga as Marc Gasol led five Girona scorers in double figures with 18. Kalise Gran Canaria is now only win behind Unicaja for the eighth and final playoff ticket following a 74-61 triumph over Estudiantes. Meanwhile, Pamesa Valencia bounced back from an early exit at the ULEB Cup Final Eight by dumping Leon 75-91 as Ruben Dougles scored 22. In other games, iubentia Bilbao Basket bested Grupo Capitol Valladolid 88-73 behind Marko Banic’s 28 points, Cajasol routed Polaris World CB Murcia 74-89 as Michalis Kakiouzis scored 23, Rico Manresa edged C.B. Granada 81-83 thanks to 24 points and 10 rebounds from Josh Asselin and Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada topped ViveMenorca 82-64.

The previous record of 17 belonged to Gran Canaria and Bilbao. Even with Joventut’s outstanding shooting, the game was close throughout and Madrid led 69-60 in the third quarter. Rudy led a 0-10 charge that put Joventut ahead early in the fourth period, but Louis Bullock regained the lead for the hosts minutes later. However Ricky Rubio and Demond Mallet stepped up in the final minutes to carry Joventut to victory. Rubio finished with 19 points and Mallet had 17. Bullock shined in defeat with 35 points, while Felipe Reyes added 21 points and 12 rebounds and Alex Mumbru scored 12.

Final Four bound Tau Ceramica's hopes to finish higher than fourth in the standings suffered a blow with a 77-81 home loss to third place AXA FC Barcelona. Tau started strong and led 24-15 after 10 minutes, but Barca cut the gap to 2 by halftime and outscored the hosts in each of the remaining periods to seal the win. Gianluca Basile and Alex Acker paced Barca with 13 points apiece, Fran Vazquez added 12 and Jaka Lakovic had 11. Tiago Splitted led Tau with 13, Sergi Vidal and Pete Mickeal scored 12 each and Mirza Teletovic and Igor Rakocevic had 11 apiece. Akasvayu Girona surpassed Unicaja for seventh place with a 65-71 win in Malaga as Marc Gasol led five Girona scorers in double figures with 18. Unicaja seemed in total control with a 37-28 halftime lead, but Akasvayu dominated the second half to grab the victory. Erik Daniels scored 12 points, Branko Cvetkovic 11 and Victor Sada and Fernando San Emeterio had 10 each. Daniel Santiago scored 15 and Jiri Welsch 10 for Unicaja in defeat. Kalise Gran Canaria is now only win behind Unicaja for the eighth and final playoff ticket following a 74-61 triumph over Estudiantes in a topsy-turvy encounter. The hosts led 41-26 at halftime, but Estudiantes outscored Gran Canaria 12-25 in the third quarter to get right back. Alas Gran Canaria rebounded in the last 10 minutes to seal the win. Carl English led the way with 12 for Gran Canaria, for whom every player scored. Meanwhile, Pamesa Valencia bounced back from an early exit at the ULEB Cup Final Eight by dumping Leon 75-91 as Ruben Dougles scored 22. Shammond Williams set the tone with 18 points and 7 assists, while Ruben Garces and Dejan Milojevic added 13 and 10 points, respectively.
