Swiss League Playoffs, Quarterfinals, Game 5: April 19, 2008

On Saturday, Vacallo downed Monthey 66-74 on the road in the crucial Game 5 of the Swiss League quarterfinals, winning that series 3-2 and advancing to the semis to face Olympic Fribourg. Monthey led 23-15 after 15 minutes but Vacallo sparked an amazing 1-14 run to get ahead by 24-29 with a minute left to halftime. With an excellent shooting performance, Vacallo increased the cushion to 46-64 early in the last quarter to control the match until the final buzzer. Martin Mihajlovic had 28 points, Rickey Gibson 15 and Slaven Smiljanic 14 for the winners. The, on Sunday afternoon, Birstal Starwings defeated Boncourt 76-62 in their Game 5 and will face Lugano Tigers. The guests took a slim 19-21 margin after 10 minutes but a 9-0 run soon gave Birstal a 33-25 cushion and the hosts never looked back. Mike Coffin had 18 points while hitting 5 of 5 shots from downtown. Raymond Henderson added 18 points and Sheray Thomas 13 for Birstal.
