Ovarense Aerosoles and Porto Ferpinta got closer to the Portuguese League finals with respective wins in the opening game of the best-of-five semifinal playoff series. Ovarense did not find any trouble to down Casino Figueira Ginasio 75-55 in Ovar on Thursday. Joao Abreu and John Waller paced the winners each with 15 points while Gregory Stempin and Graham Brown added 10 apiece for Ovarense, that led 44-34 at halftime. Waller boosted the hosts' lead to 53-36 right after the break and Ginasio never recovered. Meanwhile, Porto edged Vagos 90-87 at home on Friday. Nuno Marcal led the winners with 26 points, Fred Gentry added 19 and 10 rebounds, Fabio Fernandes had 11 points, Julian Terrell got 10 while Joao Figueiredo dished 10 assists for Porto. Ricardo Hill had 26 points for Vagos while Pedro Nuno added 25. Vagos led 75-79 midway through the fourth quarter but Marcal and Figueiredo fueled a 14-3 run that sealed the outcome down the stretch.
