Raul Lopez - Real Madrid Real Madrid became the Spanish League regular season champion and earned the right to take part in the 2008-09 Euroleague by downing archrivals AXA FC Barcelona 90-73 in front of 13,000 fans that Palacio Vistalegre on Satuday. Madrid improved to 27-5 while Barcelona dropped to 23-8 and stayed third. Raul Lopez led the winners with 19 points on 4-for-4 three-pointers while Alex Mumbru added 16 for Madrid. The playoff race also came to an end with 2 rounds of games remaining, as Akasvayu Girona, iurbentia Bilbao Basket and Unicaja joined Madrid, DKV Joventut, Barcelona, Tau Ceramica and Pamesa Valencia for the next phase. Unicaja overwhelmed DKV Joventut 92-64 in Malaga on Sunday behind 20 points from German Gabriel. Meanwhile, Akasvayu topped Kalise Gran Canaria 84-94 on the road on Sunday. Ivan Radenovic led the winners with 18 points on 8-for-8 two-pointers, as Gran Canaria went down to 15-17 and is out of the playoff race. Pamesa Valencia improved to 21-12 and stayed fifth by thrashing Polaris World CB Murcia 79-104 on the road on Sunday with 15 points from Ruben Douglas. Meanwhile, Tau Ceramica went down to 22-11 due to a 77-85 home loss against Cajasol in Vitoria on Saturday. In other games, MMT Estudiantes beat C.B. Granada 69-83 to stay alive in the fight to avoid relegation, Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada downed Grupo Capitol Valladolid 88-76, iurbentia Bilbao Basket topped Ricoh Manresa 89-77 while Grupo Begar Leon defeated ViveMenorca 91-80.

Ersan Ilyasova had 13 points for Barcelona while Roger Grimau and Fran Vazquez each added 11 for the guests, that led 35-39 midway through the second quarter. Lopez, Blagota Sekulic and yet another buzzer-beating triple by Kerem Tunceri allowed Madrid to get a 53-44 halftime margin. A 9-0 run early in the third quarter and an outstanding Mumbru helped Madrid to break the game open, 74-55, after 30 minutes, as Barcelona did not recover. Unicaja improved to 17-15 and made it to the Spanish League playoffs by overwhelming DKV Joventut 92-64 in Malaga on Sunday. Gabriel paced the winners with 20 points on 4-for-5 three-pointers. Marcus Haislip added 16, Daniel Santiago got 13, Carlos Cabezas had 12 while Carlos Jimenez posted a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds for Unicaja. Edu Hernandez-Sonseca and Demond Mallet each had 11 points for Joventut, that was without superstar guard Rudy Fernandez. Unicaja led 40-31 at halftime and used a mamooth 19-2 run to seal the outcome, 64-41, after 30 minutes. Tau Ceramica went down to 22-11 due to a 77-85 home loss against Cajasol in Vitoria on Saturday. Tyrone Ellis paced the winners with 19 points. Igor Rakocevic had 16 points for Tau, Pete Mickeal added 12 and Mirza Teletovic 10 for the hosts, that overcame a slow start to get a 77-76 edge with 3 minutes to go. Ellis, Michalis Kakiouzis and free throws by former Tau playmaker Elmer Bennett allowed Cajasol to add a prestigious road win, its first in Vitoria since 1999.

Pamesa Valencia improved to 21-12 and stayed fifth by thrashing Polaris World CB Murcia 79-104 on the road on Sunday. Douglas led the winners with 15 points. Victor Claver and Mindaugas Timinskas each added 14 while Dejan Milojevic had 11 for Pamesa, that led 41-51 at halftime and opened the third quarter with a 0-12 run to make it a 22-point game, 41-63. Murcia never returned to the game and Pamesa went back home with an important road win. Akasvayu Girona also made it to the Spanish League playoffs by downing Kalise Gran Canaria 84-94 on the road on Sunday. Akasvayu improved to 19-13 while Gran Canaria dropped to 15-17 and is out of the playoff race. Radenovic led the winners with 18 points on 8-for-8 two-pointers. Fernando San Emeterio added 16, Marc Gasol posted a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds, Arriel McDonald and Branko Cvetkovic each had 13 points while Victor Sada dished 11 assists for Akasvayu. Carl English had 19 points for Gran Canaria, Nick Caner-Medley added 16, Sitapha Savane had 12 while Kornel David and Roberto Guerra each got 10 for the hosts, that led 71-70 late in the third quarter and managed to get within 78-79 with 6 minutes to go. McDonald and Cvetkovic fueled a 0-6 Akasvayu run and the guests soon boosted their lead to 81-91 with 2 minutes to go, enough to grab an important win that sends Akasvayu to its third consecutive playoff appearance.
