Portuguese League Finals, Game 2: May 11, 2008
Graham Brown - Ovarense Aerosoles Defending champion Ovarense Aerosoles evened up the Portuguese League playoff finals by eking out a 74-72 home victory against Porto Ferpinta on Sunday. It was the second two-point home win so far as the best-of-seven series is tied 1-1. Ovarense used a killer third quarter to take control of the game but had to hang on in desperation for victory at the finish, when a Porto three-pointer to win the game missed. The game was as close as the series, 38-39, at halftime, but after Porto extended its lead with a two-pointer right after the break, Ovarense exploded. A 13-4 run featuring fastbreaks by Cordell Henry and Graham Brown was added to a late triple by Gregory Stempin as Ovarense soared in front 64-52 after three quarters. Porto answered with the first 9 points of the fourth quarter before Brown and Nuno Cortez scored baskets that settled Ovarense. Stempin's next triple and a free throw by John Waller made it 73-64, just enough for Ovarense to outlast a late rally by Porto. Stempin led the winners with 19 points, while Waller had 18 and Brown 16 points plus 15 rebounds. Nuno Marcal pumped in 29 points for Porto. Game 3 of the series is on Thursday in Porto.
