|
Montepaschi Siena finished off one of the greatest seasons in club history on Thursday night by beating Lottomatica Roma 92-81 for the club's second straight Italian League championship. Roma hung around and closed the gap to 77-72 with three minutes to play, but Ksistof Lavrinovic converted a three-point play and added a three-pointer during a 10-2 run that sealed the win. Montepaschi won the best-of-seven series 4-1 and finished the playoffs this season with an impressive 10-1 record. Bootsy Thornton led a typically well-balanced team effort of six scorers in double figures with 17 for Montepaschi. Terrell McIntyre recorded 16 points and 5 assists, Lavrinovic scored 15, Rimas Kaukenas 14, Romain Sato 11 and Shaun Stonerook posted 10 points and 8 rebounds. Roko Ukic paced Roma with 17 points, David Hawkins added 15, Rodrigo De la Fuente had 12 and Ibrahim Jaaber 10 in defeat. Roma led in the early going and the score was tied at 31-31 midway through the second period, but the home team's backcourt catapulted themselves to a 49-40 halftime lead. Hawkins and co. got within 3 several times in the third period, but Kaukenas rescued Montepaschi, which led by 10 in the fourth, before Ukic brought Roma back once more. But Lavrinovic was there again to rescue his team and wrap up a sweet win at home.
