Week 2 turns up the Top 16 heat!
Jan Vesely - Partizan
Jan Vesely celebrates
The second week of action in the Top 16 has done nothing but enhance the idea that the entire round will be a tribute to great basketball. In a span of less than 30 hours on Wednesday and Thursday, Euroleague's last unbeaten team was edged at the buzzer, three road teams rocked someone else's house and half the games were decided by five points or fewer. There are now two teams that hold first place exclusively, including the week's major victor, Group E leader Partizan, which edged Regal Barcelona 67-66 in overtime at another sold-out Pionir Arena in Belgrade, ending the visitors' 11-game win streak. Jan Vesely and Lawrence Roberts both recorded double-doubles for Partizan, which is 2-0. Barcelona, now 1-1, is joined in second place by another shock winner, Maroussi BC, which beat defending champ Panathinaikos 80-78 on their shared homecourt as Billy Keys drilled 5 triples among 17 points! Panathinaikos is 0-2 going into consecutive games against Barcelona. The other team sitting alone in first place is Group H's Olympiacos, a blowout 87-69 winner over BC Khimki as yet more scoring leaders - Yotam Halpein with 15 points, Sofoklis Schortsanitis with 14 - stepped up for the undefeated Reds. Khimki fell to 1-1 and is tied for second place with Caja Laboral, which survived 75-78 at Cibona as the hosts' game-winning layup attempt rolled out. In Group G, meanwhile, there are two undefeated co-leaders after both won big away from home. CSKA came from 15 down to beat Zalgiris 68-83 for its ninth consecutive win as Trajan Langdon shined with 17 points. And, in another shocker, Asseco Prokom routed Unicaja 50-70 on the road to go 2-0 as Qyntel Woods posted 17 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocks. The leaves Group F, where no team leads as all four are tied with 1-1 records after a pair of home wins by first-timers. First, Efes Pilsen downed Montepaschi 88-78 thanks to a dominant Mario Kasun in the middle. Then, Maccabi Electra outlasted Real Madrid 81-76 as Alan Anderson starred with 20 points.....MORE
