Week 4 of the Top 16, in which all but one game was decided by 8 points or less, will be remembered for eliminating the champions while denying three teams early playoff qualification. The biggest news of a drama-filled week came in the very last game, when
Barcelona defeated Panathinakos 67-70 in Athens to end the title defense of the Greens and assure a new team will lift the 2009-10 Euroleague trophy. Former Panathinaikos star Jaka Lakovic hit back-to-back three-pointers to spark a 3-18 run with under 6 minutes left that turned around the scoreboard around and dethroned the Greens. Barcelona is now 3-1 and tied for first place in Group E with
Partizan, which outlasted Maroussi 79-76 as Bo McCalebb scored 20 points. Group E continues to be a toss-up, four teams tied at 2-2 each as every game has been won by the home team. In Week 4 that meant
Efes Pilsen topping Maccabi Electra 63-56 on Mario Kasun’s double-double and
Real Madrid rallying past Montepaschi 77-69 as Sergio Llull scored all his 17 points in the last 11 minutes. In Group G, a would-be playoff qualifier was denied when
Asseco Prokom bested CSKA 88-81 behind David Logan's 22 points, ending the visitors' 10-game win streak and tying them both at 3-1. A first win by
Zalgiris, over Unicaja 89-84 as Danius Salenga and Martynas Pocius scored 17 each, also left those teams tied for third place. Finally, Group H's playoff berths could have been wrapped up in Week 4. Instead,
Caja Laboral's big 84-73 road win at Khimki as Mirza Teletovic poured in 25 points meant that the losers in that game and
Olympiacos, a 94-97 road winner at Cibona as Milos Teodosic scored 22 and Linas Kleiza 20, would not qualify yet, either. So, going into the next-to-last week of the Top 16, all eight playoff berths are still open. And somewhere among those who will survive one of the most exciting rounds of pro basketball ever, a new Euroleague champion can be found.
