Week 4: Barca, CSKA survive to stay perfect!

Turkish Airlines Euroleague Regular Season Week 4 lived up to – and maybe even surpassed – its lofty expectations as showdowns across Europe delivered premium excitement. Eight games were decided by 5 points or less, six were won by the visitors and when the dust cleared, two teams were standings tall with 4-0 records. The week tipped off in the Slovenian capital, where Galatasaray Medical Park downed Union Olimpija 70-79. Rookie Furkan Aldemir starred with 18 points and 11 rebounds as Gala pulled away in the fourth quarter to improve to 2-2. Later Unics Kazan edged Asseco prokom 68-72 behind Henry Domercant’s 23 points. That result tied Unics with Galatasaray for third place in Group D. Domercant nailed a go-ahead triple with 36 seconds left and Petr Gubanov sealed the win from the line. In Group B, Unicaja bested KK Zagreb CO 99-85 as Luka Zoric netted 14 against his former team to lead six Unicaja scorers in double figures. Unicaja will finish he week tied for second place in the group at 3-1. Two games in Group A were decided at the buzzer. Bennet Cantu topped Olympiacos 64-63 on Girogi Shermadini’s late heroics. The big man scored the go-ahead free throw with 7.8 seconds left and blocked Kyle Hines’s potential game-winning shot on the final play. Before that, veteran Denis Marconato posted 10 points and 6 boards to help fuel Cantu. Also in Group A, Fenerbahce Ulker defeated Bizkaia Bilbao basket 70-73 led by Bojan Bogdanovic’s 19 points. Curtis Jerrells, Omer Onan and Emir Preldzic combined for all the points in a late 0-12 run that gave the Turkish champs the lead for good. All three Group C fixtures took place Thursday. In the earliest game, Maccabi Electra outlasted Anadolu Efes 72-79 as bwin Week 3 MVP Jordan Farmar followed up with another fine game. The guard produced 18 points and 6 assists to lead the Israeli champs. EA7 Emporio Armani clocked Belgacom Spirou 76-81 by coming from behind. Antonis Fotsis and Danilo Gallinari combined for 36 points – including 6 free throws in the last minute to seal the win. In the Turkish Ailrines Euroleague Game of the Week, Partizan mt:s trumped Real Madrid 80-79, which was just the second win ever for the Serbian powerhouse against the Whites. Nikola Pekovic scored 20 and Milan Macvan posted a double-double for the victors. The results leave Maccabi alone in first place and four tied for second at 2-2. Group A’s lone Thursday fixture saw SLUC Nancy defeat Caja Laboral 90-85 to hand the visitors their first loss of the season. Akin Akingbala scored 26 and Nico Batum tallied 21 points and 9 rebounds for the French champs. The result left Laboral and Cantu tied atop Group A at 3-1. Group B featured a classic showdown that has contested the Euroleague title game twice in recent years. This time CSKA Moscow beat Panathinaikos 76-78 after overtime to grab first place at 4-0. Ramunas Siskauskas scored 14 and Nenad Krstic posted a double-double to lead the Russian champs. Earlier in Group B, Sonny Weems scored 20 as Zalgiris overcame Brose Baskets 81-70 for its first win. And in the much-anticipated Group D showdown, FC Barcelona Regal routed Montepaschi Siena 92-75 as Chuck Eidson stood tall with 22 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals.
