Two-thirds of the way through the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Top 16, there is an amazing fact: All 16 teams are still alive and kicking! No team has clinched a playoffs spot yet either, though Montepaschi Siena of Group F and FC Barcelona Regal of Group H are eerily close with 4-0 records. Two weeks will pass before the Week 5 games arrive, in which seven of the eight playoffs tickets could be issued. Perhaps the most surprising result in a week full of surprises came in Group E, where GS Medical Park knocked off CSKA Moscow 68-64. Josh Shipp scored 22 as Galatasaray snapped CSKA’s 14-game Euroleague winning streak. Former Euroleague champ Milos Teodosic was fouled shooting a three-pointer and went to the line with 10 seconds left with a chance to tie the score, but made only 1 and Shipp iced the game at the other end. In Group E’s lone Wednesday game, Olympiacos edged Anadolu Efes 65-67 on Kostas Sloukas’s free throws with 10 seconds left. The result gave the Reds a sweep of Efes, which could prove very meaningful in the playoffs race. Kostas Papanikolaou and Georgios Printezis netted 16 each for Olympiacos. CSKA could clinch a playoffs ticket with a Week 5 win over Olympiacos. Montepaschi Siena downed Unicaja 84-69 behind 18 points from Bo McCalebb in a game that was close for three quarters. The result was Siena’s eighth straight win and left it 4-0 in the Top 16 needing just one more win to reach the Playoffs. Gescrap BB dominated Real Madrid 93-69 in Group F’s other game. If Madrid would have won, it would have sent both Los Blancos and the Italian champs through to the next stage. Kostas Vasiliadis scored 19 and Aaron Jackson went off for 15 points and 10 assists to pace Bilbao, which is now tied with Madrid for second place at 2-2, but now holds the tiebreaker between them. Wednesday surprise came in Group F, where EA7 Emporio Armani bested Unics Kazan 63-58 in what was the hosts’ first Top 16 victory and the visitors’ first Top 16 loss. Antonis Fotsis made 4 of 5 three-pointers for 16 points to lead Armani. Panathinaikos cruised past Fenerbahce Ulker 72-62 on Thursday to move into a tie with Kazan for first place. Veteran big man Kostas Tsartsaris scored 21 to pace the Greens. In Week 5, FB Ulker hosts Unics and Milan welcomes Panathinaikos in crucial games for all four sides. FC Barcelona Regal held off Zalgiris 58-67 behind 18 points and 5 assists from the Euroleague’s all-time leading scorer Juan Carlos Navarro. Zalgiris, which played without leading scorer Sonny Weems, held a 32-30 halftime lead and stayed close through the end, but Barca was too strong. Maccabi Electra rocked Bennet Cantu 75-60 to claim control of its destiny in Group H. With Euroleague Basketball CEO and President Jordi Bertomeu on hand, the Maccabi defense held Cantu without a basket for the first 12-and-a-half minutes of the second half to turn a 2-point halftime deficit into a 17-point lead and coasted the rest of the way.
