THE TAKE

Antwerp Giants is still looking for victory number one in Group E and hopes to land that big win at home against Swans Gmuden. Coach Sven Van Camp's Belgian side fell to 0-3 after losing at Hapoel Galil Elyon. Shooting guard Kris Sergeant and point guard Ryan Sears combined for 42 points and center Aleksander Lichodzijewski added 16 points to lead Antwerp. But small forward Brandon Gay fouled out with zero points and one steal in 12 minutes after averaging 21 points and 7.5 steals in the first two games. Small forward David Toya filled in well for Gay with 11 points and three assists. But the Belgians did not get enough production from the rest of their bench (just 14 points besides Toya's output). And Van Camp's team did not handle the ball well, committing 20 turnovers. That must improve if Antwerp hopes to collect its first ever ULEB Cup victory. Swans Gmuden will be looking to shake off a 30-point loss at home against Triumph Lyubertsy, which dropped its record to 2-1. Coach Bob Gonnen's team struggled to just 36% shooting while watching the Russians hit 53% of their attempts. Swans could not find any rhythm especially since Lyubertsy equalized Gmunden star guard Deteri Hayes, who led the team with 14 points but was held 10.5 points below his average after two games. No other player scored more than nine points for Gonnen and that will have to change against Antwerp.

David Toya - Antwerp Giants The Antwerp Giants held off Swans Gmunden 74-68 for their first win of the ULEB Cup season. Antwerp improved to 1-3 in Group E and retained hopes of climbing back into the fight for a spot in the elimination rounds. Antwerp faces a tough challenge when it travels to Triumph Lyubertsy next week. Meanwhile the Swans fell to 2-2 and sit in a tie for third place in the group. Gmunden hosts KK Buducnost next week. Antwerp led by double figures at halftime, but the Austrian champs continued to battle and twice cut the gap to a single point, including 61-60 early in the fourth period. David Toya struck back for Antwerp with the next 5 points and the hosts continued to find ways to hold on for the debut win. Ian Hanavan led the winners with 12 points, Ryan Sears added 11 and Aleksander Lichodzijewski had 10. Deteri Mayes scored a game-high 19 for Gmunden and Peter Hutter added 11 in defeat.

Peter Hutter - Swans GmundenKris Sergeant got things going for the hosts, but Hutter kept Gmunden involved. Sergeant remained red-hot and converted a three-point play and hit a triple to put Antwerp up 18-10. Lee Wouters added a three-point play to make it 23-13 after 10 minutes. Mladen Sekularac was the next with a basket-plus-foul to give his team twice as many points as Gmunden. Mayes scored half the points in a 0-10 run to get the Swans back to 26-23, but Yves Dupont scored the next 5 points to keep Antwerp in control and it remained that way till halftime, when the Giants led 43-33. Four different Swans scored in a 0-9 surge to get the visitors within 1 early in the third period. Sears and Brandon Gay converted threes to keep Antwerp ahead and Dupont and Lichodzijewski added points to leave the hosts on top 58-51 heading into the fourth quarter. Florian Schoninger heated up from outside and Mayes added a bucket as Gmunden got within 61-60. Toya struck back for Antwerp with the next 5 points, but Michael Janisch's free throws and Matthias Mayer kept the visitors alive. Hanavan and Lichodzijewski scored to make it 72-66 with less than two minutes to go. Gmunden called a timeout and Janisch made 2 free throws, but Mayer was then whistled for an unsportsmanlike foul on Hanavan, which essentially ended the visitors' chances and gave the win to Antwerp.
