THE TAKE

A pivotal battle to advance to the Quarterfinals from Group I takes place in Thessaloniki, Greece, where Aris BSA 2003 hosts Alba Berlin on Tuesday. Both teams are European club competition winners and played the Euroleague Qualifying Round earlier this season, but both lost against Maroussi. Earlier this month, Aris beat Alba 61-65 in Berlin to rejoin the Quarterfinals race. Keydren Clark paced the winners with 20 points and of course, Alba will have to be concerned with stopping him. Clark, a shoot-first guard, feels more confident at the off-guard spot, playing most minutes alongside floor general Aaron Miles. Ivan Paunic offers defense and court sense off the bench. Miles faces a critical matchup against Rashad Wright. Meanwhile, Clark will test his scoring skills against Julius Jenkins, who was limited to just 3 points in Week 3. Steffen Hamann is ready to use his defense, athleticism and experience against Miles off the bench. Aris has to find a way to stop explosive do-it-all swingman Immanuel McElroy, who always steps up in decisive games like this. Derrick Byars will also see playing time at both wings while Lucca Staiger is ready to use his shooting skills off the bench. McElroy has a tough test against Jeremy Richardson, who is set to have further responsabilities in the upcoming games. Veteran swingman Nikos Hatzivrettas offers defense and clutch shooting against McElroy. Aris has a lot of options around the baskets, as it can hurt Alba in many ways. Aris will probably try to find Andy Betts early in the game to help the hosts to get into the foul bonus as early as possible. Aris can add power and rebounding skills with Demos Dikoudis or Dragan Labovic on the floor or open the court with experienced shooter Michalis Kakiouzis or versatile forward Nikos Barlos. Betts and Dikoudis have the tough mission to stop Blagota Sekulic, who has been in great shape recently. Kakiouzis will probably see more playing time against an experienced forward like Sekulic. Cemal Nalga offers size and defense off the bench while Dragan Dojcin can guard Labovic or Kakiouzis due to his versatility and blue-collar attitude. Aris must get Richardson and Clark involved to have more options to win. Alba must improve its ball circulation and try to get Jenkins involved. Expect a big battle in Thessaloniki this Tuesday.

Quotes Head Coaches

BLATT, DAVID
Aris BSA 2003
"As we are entering the second round of the Last 16, we see that our group is hotly contested. There have been close scores and unpredictable results, which have proven the quality of all four teams. Alba is a quality team and certainly makes it difficult for anyone to play against them. We have a serious challenge on our hands, but I believe in our will and in our skill. We have the task to do the same as we did in Berlin, in order to have better chances to qualify to the quarterfinals."
PAVICEVIC, LUKA
Alba Berlin
"Aris is somehow in the same situation in which we were 14 days ago. We had the chance to make a huge step towards the quaterfinals in front of our fans. Now Aris has this opportunity at home. I experienced games in their arena both as a player and as a coach. Therefore I know that we have to show up with a lot of heart and energy to come away with a win."

MILES, AARON
Aris BSA 2003
"I don’t think that our victory in Berlin makes this game any easier on us. In fact, I believe it will be a tougher one. We beat them at their home, so they will come here with their mind set on playing as hard as possible, in order to try and even the score between us. We’ll have to be concentrated, follow our plans and do what we have been prepared for."
Andy Betts - Aris BSA 2003 (photo arisbc.gr)The second half of the Last 16 will be a race to the finish in Group I after Aris BSA 2003 topped Alba Berlin 80-67 at home in Thessaloniki, Greece on Tuesday to take over second place in the standings. Both teams now have 2-2 records, but since both of Aris's victories have come against Alba, it will likely win any tie in which they both take part. Aris depended on its veterans to pull out what was a close game through the early fourth quarter, when Alba led 55-58. Michalis Kakouzis and Andy Betts then sparked a 15-3 run that largely decided the outcome. Betts finished with 19 points and 6 rebounds while Kakiouzis piled on 18 points and 8 boards for the winners. Jeremy Richardson tacked on 17 points and 5 boards, Keydren Clark 11 points and 6 assists. Aris outrebounded Alba 40-26 - including 16 offensive rebounds - in what was a key factor in the result. The Aris defense did the rest, keeping all Alba's scorers under 12 points. Julius Jenkins and Jurica Golemac had 11 each for the guests, while Blagota Sekulic followed with 10.

Aris fired up the home fans by racing to a 9-0 advantage that included 5 points by Richardson. Almost 4 minutes passed before Sekulic got Berlin on the scoreboard, but soon the visitors had not only tied the score but pushed their run a basket higher to lead 9-11 on Cemal Nalga's layup. It was the hosts' turn to react, and they did so by going inside to Betts and Dimos Dikoudis who led Aris back to a 20-17 advantage after 10 minutes. The process repeated itself in the second quarter, when Steffan Hamman's three-pointer for Alba tied it 22-22. Aris again pulled away as a pair of triples by Clark made it 28-22, and Alba again rallied back, behind Nalga and Golemac, to go ahead on the latter's shot from the arc and make it to halftime still holding a 36-38 lead.

Both defenses tightened to open the second half, with Aris only giving Alba foul shots while its newly signed shooter Matt Walsh had the only basket through 4 minutes. Richardson and Jenkins exchanged layups then, followed by Betts and Golemac, although Sekulic's free throws kept Alba up 44-47. Richardson struck from downtown to tie before Kakiouzis fueled a takeover with his own triple and a steal-plus-layup for the third quarter's last 5 points and a new Aris lead, 52-49. When Derrick Byars copied those 5 points in a row for Alba to start the final quarter, the guests shot ahead 55-58, and Aris needed something now. That something was Betts re-emerging with a three-point play the hard way and a big block that sparked the Aris defense while Richardson and Kakiuouzis completed a 7-0 run to a 62-58 lead. When Jenkins hit from deep for Alba, the hosts answered with two-for-one, Walsh and Kakiouzis burying triples at 70-61. Clark and Kakiouzis added one more triple each for good measure as Aris fans looked forward to race until the finish in Last 16 Group I.

Head Coaches

BLATT, DAVID
Aris BSA 2003
"Although we won by 13, the game wasn’t that easy. Alba is a disciplined, well-coached team and difficult to play against. We persisted and we chipped into the ice until we broke it! However, our job isn’t done yet. We have more games to win in order to qualify and certainly that’s our goal. I was very confident before the game because we had six days to prepare and that was very important for us. If you work hard, good things will happen."
PAVICEVIC, LUKA
Alba Berlin
"We just weren't ready enough to beat Aris here. We did some things well, but nearly not enough to get the victory. We couldn’t be as effective as we should have been on Kakiouzis, Walsh and Richardson. It takes a lot of concentration to make it and we missed this at some points. We missed some free throws and important rebounds, while Aris scored some big shots."
