THE TAKE

A rematch of last year's ULEB Cup Final gets Group G of the Top 16 rolling in Thessaloniki, Greece on Thursday as Aris TT Bank welcomes Dynamo Moscow. It is the first-ever Top 16 game for either team, but the fans in Thessaloniki will certainly want revenge for Dynamo winning last season's ULEB Cup title game. Dynamo is on a five-game winning streak in the Euroleague and finished 10-4 in the regular season. Meanwhile, Aris had to battle hard to reach the Top 16 but managed to survive with a 6-8 record. Aris was one of the best rebounding teams in the regular season (34.6 rpg.) but ranked last in points scored (69.4 ppg.), two-point accuracy (45.2%) and assists (10 apg.). Even with that, Aris features one of the best frontcourt duos in the competition, featuring power forward Jeremiah Massey (13.4 ppg., 8.6 rpg., 2.1 apg.) and mobile center Mike Wilkinson (12.7 ppg., 6.6 rpg., 2.2 spg.). They ranked second and 11th, respectively, in index rating at the end of the regular season. Wilkinson will have a tough test against Lazaros Papadopoulos (15.6 ppg., 6.8 rpg.), the Euroleague MVP in January, who is having a career season and returns home to Greece with his frontcourt alter ego Antonis Fotsis (14.2 ppg., 46.8% 3FG, 6.4 rpg.). Fotsis will try to attack Massey in one-on-one situations while Papadopoulos and Obinna Ekezie (7.1 ppg., 67.9% 2FG) will have to go against Wilkinson and Giannis Giannoulis (2.4 rpg.) in the low post. Dynamo travels to Athens without Travis Hansen (14.4 ppg.), who got injured last week and will miss the remainder of the season. Eddie Gill (7.5 ppg., 47.1% 3FG), Sergey Monya (4 ppg.), Sergei Bykov (2.3 ppg.) and Bojan Popovic (10.6 ppg., 1.6 spg.), who shined in the ULEB Cup final last season, will have to step up to help Dynamo not to think about Hansen's absence. Gill and Popovic will test their point guard skills against Terrell Castle (10.3 ppg.), who is expected to play despite spraining an ankle earlier this week. George Kalaitzis and Spyros Panteliadis will be ready to come off the bench if Castle is not feeling 100 percent. Monya may be a mismatch for Aris due to his athleticism, as Dynamo coach Dusan Ivkovic may use twin playmakers, Popovic and Gill, to go against slasher Savvas Iliadis (7.3 ppg.) or scoring machine Alex Scales (14 ppg.). Above all, this is a special game for thousands of Aris fans who saw their team lose against Dynamo in the ULEB Cup final last April. Expect nothing but a balanced, intense game in which even the slighest detail will have importance to the final outcome.

Quotes Head Coaches

IVKOVIC, DUSAN
Dynamo Moscow
"First of all, we must forgot the regular season. Now will start new, strong and very short competitions, so now it's not important who was first, second or fifth. All teams are in same position and have the same chances. I think that each game will be a big fight for each point. We are going to play in Thessaloniki against Aris, who probably has the best basketball fans in Europe. Their help is enormous in each game: their public really is the sixth player of local team. On tactical plan, we must try to control two things: offensive rebounds, where Aris is very strong thanks to Massey and Willknson, and their one-on-one play. We are going with 13 players, with our new guy Taquan Dean, who has made some practices with the team, but we don't know how minutes he will play. Obina Ekezie will travel but again we don't have Miroslav Raicevic. He has some small problem the Achilles' tendon of his right leg and the doctor said he must rest it."

"Dynamo Moscow is a very tough team! I know that they overcame Aris in the last ULEB Cup Final, but I have no feelings of revenge because both teams play now in the Euroleague Top 16. However, I know that our fans would like to watch us fighting against Dynamo with passion in order to celebrate another home win together. This game is of great importance for us because the opponent seems the toughest in the group, according to the regular season. The coaching staff has marked Lazaros Papadopoulos as the core of Dynamo's defense and offense, but it's obvious that they have plenty of experienced players. What is necessary for us is to work and act as a team until the final buzzer of the game."
FOTSIS, ANTONIS
Dynamo Moscow
"I perfectly know what kind of reception we will have in Thessaloniki. I have played there many times and I know how difficult it is to play in an atmosphere like this. But, this is special motivation for me also. We have won the last five games in the Regular Season and we will try to continue that streak in the Top 16. In these short competitions, each victory away is a big step forward. So we will try to make this first step."
Lazaros Papadopoulos - Dynamo Moscow Dynamo Moscow passed the test of fire between two Top 16 newcomers when it rallied to win 74-86 over Aris in Thessaloniki, Greece in the Group G opener for both teams. Dynamo's defense decided the outcome by holding Aris without a basket during the first 7 minutes of the final quarter, turning a tie game into double-digits leads for itself with a 1-12 run. Dynamo goes to 1-0 while Aris fell to 0-1 despite another raucous sellout crowd behind it. Dynamo had a pair of Greeks to help it deal with that crowd, as January MVP Lazaros Papadopoulos led the winners with 18 points and Antonis Fotsis added 16. Bojan Popovic added 14 points, drew 10 fouls and made 4 steals. Two unexpected contributions boosted the hosts: newly signed Taquan Dean had near-perfect shooting and 12 points in 13 minutes, while Yuri Vasilyev chipped in 10

Dynamo started the game confidently and based on baskets coming from its own Greek duo, Fotsis and Papadopoulos, got in front 2-7. Aris showed some nervousness as experienced Giorgos Sigalas missed twice from the free-throw line and the team's decision-making on offence was lacking. Finally, Simonas Serapinas and Dimitris Tsaldaris hit jumpers from the wings scored to make it 6-7, but Dyamo immedately fed Papadopoulos and Fotsis for 4 quick points. It was time for the Aris big men to step up, as Massey and Wilkinson posted a basket each to make it 10-12. Papadopoulos continued unstoppable in the paint while Scales seized an opportunity from behind the ar. Fotsis and Massey exchanged baskets, but the real surprise came from Tsaldaris, usually used for a few minutes as a substitute, but now taking advantage of his starting assignment. Tsaldaris would finish the quarer with 7 points on perfect shooting, helping Aris stay as close as 22-23 after 10 minutes.

Jeremiah Massey - Aris TT BankWilkinson's free throw to open the second quarter tied the game for the first time, 23-23, but soon Dynamo reacted with foul shots from Yuri Vasilyev and a layup from Papadopoulos to make it 23-27. When Dean added another basket, Aris needed a timeout. The tempo slowed now as both teams committed fouls to disturb the other's offense. And when Massey connected, but Dean did the same at 26-31. Aris coach Andrea Mazzon used a four-guard lineup now with Giorgios Sigalas at power forward. Savvas Iliadis went for 3 straight points at 30-33, but Dynamo continued to control the rhythm. Sergey Monya and Sigalas exchanged baskets at 32-36. Scales nailed a triple at 35-37, but again Fotsis and Papadopoulos combined for 4 points to help Dynamo sail to 35-41. Scales was hot, however, popping in another three-pointer at 38-41. Papadopoulos was accurate from the line, but Wilkinson came in to score at 40-43. When Scales chipped in his fourth triple the fans went crazy as the scoreboard stood tied at 43-43 when the halftime buzzer sounded.

To open the second half, Scales found room for a layup that put Aris ahead for the first time, 45-43. Bojan Popovic restored the lead for Dynamo with a three-pointer, but Scales was in the zone as he added another jumper at 47-46. Dynamo was not bothered as a second consecutive triple, this time from Dean, gave the guests the lead again at 47-49. Baskets kept coming easy. Tsaldaris fired in back-to-back triples to make it 53-51 and Terrell Castle connected at 55-51. Aris was now controlling the score. uri Vasilyev dunked to curb the crowd’s enthusiasm, but soon Wilkinson made it 57-53. Vasilyev was now the go-to-guy for the visitors at 57-55, but Monya was the man to save the last word as his triple beat the buzzer and resulted to a 61-61 tie after 30 minutes.

Bojan Popovic - Dynamo MoscowVasilyev and Papadopoulos were ready to hurt Aris as Dynamo sailed ahead 61-65 to start the final quarter. Aris was struggling to get connected. Dimitriy Khvostov came in off the bench to add a layup for Dynamo at 62-67. Aris scored just 1 point in 5 minutes because as Dynamo strengthened its defense, the hosts filled with pressure. Papadopoulos and Dean increased Dynamo's run to 1-10 and its lead to 62-71. When Dean fired in a crucial triple the home fans went quiet as Dynamo got a 63-74 advantage with just 3 minutes left. Aris kept turning over the ball until Wilkinson finally scored the hosts’ first basket 7 minutes after the start of the final quarter. It was way too late. Based on an incredible 12-1 beginning in the fourth quarter, Dynamo escaped from Thessaloniki with a critical Top 16 road win.

Head Coaches

MAZZON, ANDREA
Aris TT Bank
"Dynamo Moscow is the fourth best Euroleague team, according to the standings of the first round , so our job was very tough. We played good enough for 30 minutes, but we didn't take advantage of the opportunity we had to increase our lead at 61-56. Although in the second half we played better defense on Fotsis and Papadopoulos, we lost concentration and also committed 16 turnovers, which are too many for a home game. We lack experience as a team, but there is not time to think about this. Now we have to prepare ourselves for a better game in Malaga."
IVKOVIC, DUSAN
Dynamo Moscow
"It is always hard to play in Thessaloniki. Aris is a tough team but we managed to control the game in the last quarter and escape with a very important away win. In the first half, we felt the pressure of the fans and didn't have the proper defensive reactions, but then we had patience and good decisions at both ends. We read the match in a good way and didn't allow Aris to come back. I was worrying how the absence of Hansen should affect my team, but Dean played well. Khvostov is a young talented player who helped us a lot tonight and proved that he can play at this level."

Players

TSALDARIS, DIMITRIOS
Aris TT Bank
"We had the opportunity to win the game, but we made mistakes at the most crucial moments and we paid for them. We didn't have enough concentration and gave them the possibility to make a 2-20 run and seal the victory."
FOTSIS, ANTONIS
Dynamo Moscow
"We registered a big away win, but it is too early for conclusions. We have a long way to go."
PAPADOPOULOS, LAZAROS
Dynamo Moscow
"It's the best possible start to the Top 16. The fans pushed Aris as always and this is a good atmosphere. They played good for 30 minutes, but Dynamo has better quality and more solutions. We miss Hansen, but Dean did well. All the Greek players who are playing abroad have a great motivation to go all the way and make the Final Four in Athens."
