THE TAKE

A team trying to stay alive in Group G meets another trying for its first-ever Top 16 victory when Benetton welcomes Aris TT Bank to Treviso, Italy on Wednesday. Benetton (2-2) needs a win to tie for the second place in this group, as co-leaders Unicaja (3-1) hosts Dynamo Moscow (3-1) play this week's other other Group G game. Meanwhile, Aris (0-4) lost its last three games by a combined margin of 5 points and wants to prove with a victory that it belongs even though eliminated. This marks the fourth meeting of the season between these teams, with Benetton having won two of the previous three. When they met in Treviso for a regular season game back in November, Benetton beat Aris 64-42 with near-record defense: the Aris score total, which included a four-point final quarter, marked the third-lowest scoring by any team in a Euroleague game. This time, Aris will be without one of its big guns, Mike Wilkinson (12.3 ppg., 5.9 rpg.), who is sick and staying home in Thessaloniki. Since November, however, the Aris offense has changed as Alex Scales (15.3 ppg.) is the current Top 16 best scorer at 19.5 points per game. He is the cornerstone of a deep backcourt in which Giorgos Sigalas (2.7 ppg.) and Dimitris Tsaldaris (3.4 ppg.) are seeing extended playing time lately, with dangerous Savvas Iliadis (7.8 ppg., 41.2% 3FG) coming off the bench. Terrell Castle (9.8 ppg., 2.3 apg.) stays as the guests' floor general along with Georgios Kalaitzis (1.6 ppg.). Both players will have the tough mission to guard Nikos Zisis (10.9 ppg., 4.6 apg.) and Marco Mordente (9.5 ppg., 53.1% 3FG). Benetton wing players Matteo Soragna (6.9 ppg.) and Bryant Smith (3.6 ppg.) will test their defensive skills against Scales and Iliadis. Preston Shumpert (11.5 ppg., 53.8% 3FG) is set to share the scoring duties along with Zisis and Mordente, as injured guard Terrell Lyday (9.6 ppg.) is out for this game. Without Wilkinson, Aris will center its inside attack on Jeremiah Massey (12.8 ppg., 7.9 rpg.) even when Giannis Giannoulis (2.6 ppg., 2.6 rpg.) have been very effective off the bench. One or both of them can expect tough matchups with Marcus Goree (13.6 ppg., 6.4 rpg.), Spencer Nelson (8.6 ppg., 6.1 rpg.) and Angelo Gigli (6.9 ppg., 3.3 rpg.) but also help from the great help defense of their teammates. Expect a high-quality defensive battle in which only the strongest will survive.

Quotes Head Coaches

MAZZON, ANDREA
Aris TT Bank
"As a team, we are very tired after so many games and big trips. We came back yesterday night from Athens and we are going to fly again in the morning. We faced one very important game against AEK for the Greek League and that took a lot of energy out of us. But even though this game against Benetton is a game of life and death for our opponents - and not for us because we don't have any chance for qualify to the Quarterfinal Playoffs - we would like to try. Our goal, as it has been all along, is try to win every game like. So we will try as usual to do the same, with no doubt, forgetting the fact that we have at this moment some physical problems."

KALAITZIS, GEORGIOS

"For us these games against Benetton and Unicaja are very important to collect experiences. Every team that respects history always plays for the win and Aris has improved these year always going for the win regardless of the opponent. We know that the game against Benetton is going to be very tough because our opponent needs the victory too much. I believe that it's going to be a very nice game and we will do our best in their home. Despite our disqualification we have the same motivation to win the game. If we didn't have the motivation we would not play in the Euroleague. Of course, it's difficult to play when you know that you don't have any chance to qualify but it would be a real pity to show our fans that we don't care about these last two games. We are professionals and we will play like the first game against Benetton in Alexandreio. We just have to be steady in our performance and play as in the last few games. Of course we have to stop Zisis, Soragna and Goree without underestimating the others players of Benetton."
Preston Shumpert - Benetton Treviso Benetton Treviso recorded a crucial home win over Aris TT Bank on Wednesday night to remain in the hunt for a spot in the Quarterfinal Playoffs from Group G. Preston Shumpert scored 17 to lead Benetton, which improved to 3-2 in the standings. The Italian champs will now wait to see what happens in Thursday's game between group rivals Dynamo Moscow and Unicaja to know what it needs to do next week to advance. Meanwhile Aris, which already last week lost all chances to reach the playoffs, fell to 0-5 in the Top 16 and lost its seventh consecutive Euroleague game dating back to the regular season. Benetton came out strong and quickly established a double-digit advantage, which it held on to for most part for the rest of the game. Aris closed the game a few times, but never enough to cause real concern for the hosts. Spencer Nelson came off the bench for 15 points and 7 rebounds, while Marco Mordente, Nikos Zizis and Matteo Soragna added 13 each. Soragna was also good for 6 assists. Alex Scales paced Aris with 14 points and 9 rebounds, Giorgos Sigalis had 11 points and Jeremiah Massey 10.

Aris opened fire first through Massey but Angelo Gigli replied. Dimitris Tsaldaris and Shumpert then exchanged threes 5-5. Massey responded for Aris before Gigli scored from downtown for a great start and when Mordente converted a three-point play fresh off the bench, Benetton had pulled away to 12-7. Nelson scored from the foul line before Sigalas strangely unmarked combined with Scales to reduce the gap. However Zizis and Mordente were on hand to reestablish a 7-point margin. Shumpert’s second bomb of the night gave Benetton a double-digit advantage and a Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf three was canceled by 4 quick points by Nelson to fixing the score at 25-14 after 10 minutes.

Alex Scales - Aris TT BankA great play by Bryant Smith got the second quarter started as Aris was misfiring from all angles. Things kept going wrong for the visitors as they accumulated fouls and slipped 15 points behind. However Benetton then got get sloppy on offense and Aris took advantage through Georgios Kalaitzis, Sigalas and Scales to get within 9, prompting Treviso coach David Blatt to call a timeout. Soragna tried to reassure his coach, but Massey drew a foul from Marcus Goree to complete a three-point play that made it 31-23. Mordente’s jumper was then met by a three from Sigalas as the gap closed to 35-29 with 3 minutes on the clock. That’s when Shumpert and Zizis took charge again. A couple of buckets later and the home team headed to the locker room leading 43-33 at halftime.

Soragna scored the first basket of the second half, however Aris replied with 5 quick points to get within 45-38. Two points by Shumpert on the break were then met by a spectacular hook by Massey. Zizis kept hurting his Greek national teammates and when Goree connected from beyond the arc, 10 points were separating the two teams again. Tsaldaris fired in a three of his own to keep his team in the game. But Soragna and Shumpert combined to put Benetton 12 up, causing Aris coach Andrea Mazzon to call his players for a chat. The crowd could not believe the magical pass Soragna dished to Nelson in traffic. Soragna continued to shine with another assist to Mordente for a 62-48 lead. Yannis Giannoulis and Massey worked hard underneath to keep Aris’s hopes alive, but Mordente knocked down a killer three at the buzzer, handing his team a 65-51 advantage entering the last quarter.

Marco Mordente - Benetton TrevisoSoragna started the fourth quarter where he left off, firing a three before Goree executed a master block. The guests’ last hopes were left not surprisingly on Scales’s shoulders, as he made a three-point play. Abdul-Rauf followed suit to make it a 12-point game with an eternity to go. As the Benetton got sluggish, Nelson scored a basket-plus-foul to reestablish a 15-point margin. The game was slipping away from Aris's hands. Nevertheless, Aris continued to fight hard and even arguing with the referees with only 4 minutes from a probable defeat. Scales's fierce dunk was met by a clean jumper by Zizis. Kevin Fletcher took the floor and scored, but Shumpert kept them at bay as the seconds ticked away and the gap was not lessening, allowing the fans to celebrate a crucial Benetton win.

Head Coaches

BLATT, DAVID
Benetton Basket
“Aris deserve a lot of credit for what they’ve done this year in Europe. I am pleased with the way and with the consistency we played with tonight. Now, next week’s game will decide our fate and you can’t ask more than that. I think whatever happens next week, three wins in the Top 16 is a great result, but obviously once you are in the Top 16, all you want is to get to the final eight.”
MAZZON, ANDREA
Aris TT Bank
“I’d like to thank our supporters who came all the way from Thessaloniki to support us even though we were out of the cup. Today we missed Wilkinson, who is a player that gives us so many little things that people don’t always see. We’ll try to win the last one against Malaga. I think we did a good job this year and for a club with such a small budget, it’s great to be part of the Top 16.”

Players

NELSON, SPENCER
Benetton Basket
“I think we played really well tonight. Our guards were awesome. We let the win slip away last week and we knew we had to get the result. Now, we are going to Moscow with a chance. It’s going to be very tough, but we’re gonna do our best.”
CASTLE, TERREL
Aris TT Bank
“They got a 10-point lead and against a team like Benetton away from home, it’s always tough to come back in the game. We played hard till the end. For us, every Euroleague game is very important and we always try to win.”
