THE TAKE

Two teams with different streaks in the competition are set to go against each other in Thessaloniki, Greece, where Aris TT Bank hosts Efes Pilsen on Wednesday night. The game is a rematch of the 1993 Saporta Cup final in which Aris lifted the trophy after a 50-48 win in Turin, Italy. Aris enters the game on a two-game losing streak after starting the season 3-0, while Efes Pilsen has won its last two games, including a resounding 70-77 road triumph against Lietuvos Rytas last week, to improve to 3-2. Drew Nicholas paced Efes with 19 points before leaving the game with an ankle injury. Nicholas is fully recovered, as he scored 32 points in a Turkish League game this weekend and will be leading Efes's backcourt along with playmakers Sconnie Penn and Ender Arslan andr three-point threat Serkan Erdogan. Kenny Gregory might become the key player in this game due to his athleticism, physical skills and versatility. Aris has its own versatile weapon in Reyshawn Terry, who seems the right player to guard Gregory. Aris can put out a smaller, more athletic lineup with Terry at power forward, or use him at small forward to take advantage of his first step and driving skills. Penn and Arslan are set to have a tough battle against Terrell Castle and Giorgos Kalaitzis while Nicholas is ready to test his scoring skills against Bracey Wright. If Terry sees time at power forward, that will mean more playing time for streak shooter Simonas Serapinas and Dimitris Tsaldaris. Efes's main concern will be slowing Jeremiah Massey, who leads Aris in points, rebounds and blocks. Massey can drive to the basket, score inside or take the outside shot. His perfect complement is Hanno Mottola, a talented center with unlimited range. Efes is deep in the middle, especially when Ermal Kuqo comes off a 15-point effort in 12 minutes against L. Rytas. Kuqo offers post skills and deep range, Loren Woods is a powerful center ready to face Mottola, Andre Hutson provides experience and mid-range shots while Kerem Gonlum is a tremendous defensive player who should go against Massey. Of course, and just as always, Aris will be backed by thousands of die-hard fans ready to create a strong basketball atmosphere in this encounter with a share of third place on the line.

Quotes Head Coaches

HERBERT, GORDON
Aris TT Bank
“Efes Pilsen is a very good team. In my opinion, it's the best team in our group and one of the candidates to reach the Final Four along with Malaga. They have a complete roster. Any player can decide the game in the end. David Blatt is great friend of mine and I know that his teams always have well organized offensive plays and tough defense. However, my main concern is how we can play better than last week and win the game in front of our fans. After four bad results in a row, we took a squeaker on the road for the Greek League and we are ready to build on our good performance. It's time to bounce back from the home loss against Milano and pick up a win against Efes Pilsen to make our fans be proud of us again.”
BLATT, DAVID
Efes Pilsen
“As we move along in the group, every game becomes more important. This is one of those games against Aris TT Bank. They have a great tradition of basketball and a very, very strong support and great basketball environment. I think they are a very well coached team and although they have some ups and downs, I know how dangerous they can be in their own arena in Thessaloniki. We have to be at our best to win and we will try to do so.”

“To be honest, we are still trying to get over the last two difficult weeks. Undoubtedly, we are in much better mood after winning last Sunday in Maroussi for the Greek League, but we all know that beating Efes Pilsen is a huge challenge. Our opponent is among the elite teams of the Euroleague and the main favorites to be in the top of our group. However, we have worked very hard to be ready for this game and to fight for 40 minutes to gain a decisive win for our future.”
ERDOGAN, SERKAN
Efes Pilsen
“Aris is a very strong and tough opponent for us. They are playing much better especially when they play at home, except the last accident against Armani Jeans Milano last week. They really have fantastic fans, which makes it difficult for the opponents to concentrate and play. We are conscious about that and first will try to remain patient and cool. At the second stage, we will try to win with all our aim to feel much better in the group.”
Jeremiah Massey - Aris TT Bank Aris TT Bank holds a share of second-place in Group B after holding on until the finish of a 67-64 victory over dangerous Efes Pilsen at home in Thessaloniki, Greece on Wednesday. Aris raised its record to 4-2, good enough to join either Lietuvos Rytas or Unicaja in second place after those two co-leaders played later. Efes, meanwhile is at 3-3 and hoping to hold fourth place exclusively at the end of the week. Efes had enjoyed leads of up to 7 points in the second quarter, but Aris used a 15-0 run to turn the game around before halftime. Down by double digits in the second half, Efes rallied to within a point, 62-61, with 30 seconds to play, but Aris finished off the win at the foul line. Jeremiah Massey was huge again for Aris with a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds. Bracey Wright led the scoring charge with 20 points for the winners and Reyshawn Terry added 10. Efes struggled to score against the Aris defense during long stretches of the game, producing in the end only two double-digit scorers, Drew Nicholas with 15 points and Ender Arslan with 11. Kerem Gonlum pulled down 10 rebounds for Efes, which saw big man Ermal Kuqo slowed by an injury after scoring 8 points and pulling 7 rebounds in the first half.

Aris started the game at full speed with Tsaldaris burying the very first triple try and driving to the basket twice to give the hosts an early 7-2 lead. For Efes, only Penn managed to find his way to the basket in the first 3 minutes, but soon Nicholas raced for a layup and Gonlum scored a tip-in to make it 8-6. Head coach David Blatt then put Ender Arslan in charge of organizing his team's offense, and Efes tied it 10-10 with an off-balance jumper by Hutson, 10-10. Bracey Wright for Aris and Arslan traded successive shots from beyond the arc to keep the game balanced until Ermal Kuqo decided the final outcome of the quarter by pushing Efes into the lead at 14-17.

Ender Arslan - Efes PilsenEfes continued adding to its margin early in the second quarter despite losing their best player until that moment, Kuqo, to a minor injury. Aris could not find decen shots, as only Lazaros Agadakos got a basket down and Penn quickly extended the Efes lead to 16-21, forcing a timeout by the home team. Nonetheless, Efes kept hurting Aris in the paint as Gonlum supplied his team's biggest lead yet, 17-24 midway through the quarter. But what time remained until halftime would belong to Aris. First, Massey took the hosts in his arms and drove twice to the basket trying to wake his team up. Soon, Hanno Mottola copied him with a nice move under the basket that all but erased the difference, at 23-24, and prompted an Efes timeout. The visitors remained scoreless for 4 minutes while Terrell Castle fired from downtown to put his team in charge again. Soon, the Massey-Mottola duo capped a 15-0 run to preserve a 32-25 Aris lead at halftime.

Nothing changed to start the third quarter. Efes couldn’t find its way to the basket and Wright boosted Aris with his second triple and hit another jumper to push the margin for the first time into double-digit territory, at 38-27. After a timeout asked by David Blatt, Loren Woods reduced the difference with back-to-back layups for Efes, but Tsadaris soon responded to keep his team well ahead. The visitors found no offensive answers, while Wright went to the foul line and restored the double-digit lead at 43-33. However, Efes didn’t surrender. Woods scored from the free throw line and blocked Reyshawn Terry’s dunk as Nicholas drew the guests to within 45-39 after 30 minutes.

Hanno Mottola - Aris TT BankNicholas brought Efes even closer with a jumper to open the final quarter, but Terry netted a layup and a free throw to give his team fresh air. Massey followed that with a dunk, but Efes nonetheless found more ways to make up points, with Hutson scoring under the basket and Nicholas from downtown to make it 52-48. Aris took a timeout with 6 minutes to go, but failed to add to the lead. Arslan struck now from beyond the arc to put Efes on the brink of a takeover, at 52-51. After Terry and Woods exchanged points, Wright seemed to decide the game for Aris with a strange four-point play: his layup came with a free throw that bounced around the rim, where Hutson accidentally tapped it in for 2 more points for a 60-55 Aris lead with 90 seconds left. Efes had not said its last word yet. Hutson had a tip-in and drew a flagrant foul on the play, leading to another triple by Nicholas that suddenly showed a 62-61 scoreboard with 30 seconds left. Castle went successfully to the foul line for Aris, but Arslan missed 1 of 2 for Efes. Wright added a pair of free throws for Aris to make it 66-62 and after Nicholas missed a late triple try, Aris finally won a thriller, 67-64.

Head Coaches

HERBERT, GORDON
Aris TT Bank
"We achieved a very important win, which is based on our excellent performance at the end of the second quarter. This is the way I want to play: Great defense, fast tempo and good move of the ball. We got the momentum and managed to put the game in the right way. On the opposite side, I don’t like our reaction in the last 40 seconds and we have to work on this and to learn from our mistakes."
BLATT, DAVID
Efes Pilsen
"It was a strange match. Talking about statistics, we deserved to win but we didn't. Usually a team which is superior in assists, rebounds, block shots and evaluation wins the game, but tonight it didn't happen. Aris forced us into a lot of turnovers and also we missed some important free throws. Efes Pilsen is not ready yet, especially on offense, which needs to be improved."

Players

WRIGHT, BRACEY
Aris TT Bank
"We had lost two consecutive games, but the team recovered and we are all happy for the result. I was feeling confident and very aggressive, so I wanted to have the ball in the last minutes. Better days are to come for both the team and myself."
PENN, SCOONIE
Efes Pilsen
"Aris ran a 15-0 and took the advantage, but we came back and we fought for the victory. This is a positive fact, but it was not enough for my team to escape with the victory. They took advantage of our turnovers and didn’t allow us to win."
