THE TAKE

Artland Dragons look to continue its magical ride in its first ULEB Cup season and can improve to 3-1 in Group H with a victory at home against Benetton Tamoil. Coach Chris Fleming's Dragons survived a hard-fought win at home last week against ASK Riga, successfully bouncing back from its 44-point drubbing at Lukoil Academic the week before. The Germans did a good job against Riga's shooters, holding them to 4-of-18 (22%) from three-point range. And Artland was lucky that the Latvians struggled from the free throw line (13-of-19 - 68%). Looking forward to a real telling game against Treviso, Fleming will not be happy about his team's 21 turnovers against Riga. But he can point to a 31-21 rebounding advantage. He also knows that power forward Terrance Thomas played below his usual level. Center Adam Chubb and power forward Matt Freije combined for 29 points off the bench and playmaker John Goldsberry dished out eight assists. As long as Artland can control its turnovers and hold its own on the boards, it will definitely challenge Benetton Tamoil. Coach Oktay Mahmudi's Treviso unit finally picked up its first victory by winning at home against Lukoil Academic in Mahmudi's first game as new head coach. The Italians used a big 35-point second quarter to gain control of the game. Power forward Nana Mensah-Bonsu led the way with 16 points, 15 rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots while small forward Matteo Soragna also scored 16 points and dished out four assists. Mahmudi's troops did an especially good job on Lukoil's perimeter players as the Bulgarians shot just 6-of-21 (28%) from three-point range. Treviso's backcourt will have to be ready as Artland will come with a three-guard attack.

Adam Chubb scored 27 points as the Artland Dragons grabbed an impressive 84-79 victory at home over Benetton Tamoil, coming back from a 13-point halftime deficit. John Goldsberry scored 14 points and dished out eight assists while Lamont McIntosh scored 15 points and Matt Freije chipped in 12 as the German side improved its record to 3-1 in Group H. The Italians dropped to 1-3 despite 18 points each by Mario Austin, Reece Gaines and Matteo Soragna. Treviso were out-rebounded 32-16 which did not allow them to take advantage of 17 Artland turnovers.

Freije opened the game with the first basket and Chubb's thee-point play made it 12-6 for Artland. But Gaines knocked down two three-pointers and Austin had one long ball as Treviso grabbed a 12-17 lead. McIntosh temporarily stopped the bleeding with a three-ball of his own, but Marco Mordente buried two treys and the Italians led 16-25 after one period. Austin continued the surge in the second and a Gaines three made it 16-30 early on in the second. Dirk Madrich had two scores and E.J. Rowland's basket made it 24-30. Chubb hit a basket and a free throw to trim the deficit to 30-32. But Austin answered with another three-pointer and Soragna's long ball made it 31-44 at the break. Freije scored from inside and outside to open the second half by cutting the deficit to 36-44. Goldsberry's three-ball made it 41-48 and Chubb brought Artland to within 45-48. But Austin scored again and Gaines knocked down a long ball to re-establish and eight-point lead - 45-53. After Freije made two foul shots, it was Angelo Gigli's turn to hit from downtown for a 49-56 advantage. And Soragna followed with another long ball for a 51-59 cushion. But Chubb and Darius Hall scored baskets before the end of the third to make it 55-59 going into the fourth. Artland's Rich Melzer came off the bench to knock down a three-pointer and Hall's basket gave the Germans the lead 60-59 and sent the fans wild. Austin answered yet again and Mordente's three-ball pushed Treviso back ahead 60-64. But Goldsberry knocked down a three-pointer and Chubb converted a three-point play for a 66-64 lead. Gaines hit four straight foul shots to knot the game at 72-72 only to watch Chubb hit four free throws of his own for a 76-72 lead. The Italians refused to die and Rodrigo De la Fuente knocked down a three-pointer to make it a one-point game - 76-75. Goldsberry hit again from downtown and McIntosh's three-pointer gave Artland an 82-77 lead. After Soragna hit two foul shots, McIntosh made the first free throw and missed the second but Paul Johnson grabbed the offensive rebound and Rowland stepped up to hit a foul shot for the final 84-79 score-line.

Head Coaches

FLEMING, CHRIS
Artland Dragons
"In the first half Treviso definitely dominated the game and we had a lot of turnovers which we couldn't explain. For some reason the players were kind of nervous. But we focused on that during halftime and stopped the shots of Treviso and didn't lose the ball so often. I am very proud of my team."
MAHMUTI, OKTAY
Benetton Tamoil
"We started well in this game and we played concentrated. For some reason we lost our focus, I cannot explain that. We still have too many ups and downs in our games. And we let the Dragons score 53 points in the second half. That is unacceptable and you cannot win a ULEB Cup game like that."

Players

CHUBB, ADAM
Artland Dragons
"We knew that we were the better team. Even when Benetton got ahead by 13 points, we knew if we would stay calm and relax a little bit, we would be alright. We didn't panic and stayed confident and we knew what to do in order to win this game."
GAINES, REECE
Benetton Tamoil
"We are sad that we lost this game, because we controlled it most of the time. We lost our focus in the last ten minutes. We are still trying to improve our play but we are still missing some things to take the win."
