THE TAKE

Benetton Tamoil looks to save its ULEB Cup season as it hosts ASK Riga in a game with plenty of meaning in Group H. Coach Oktay Mahmudi's Italians led by 13 points and dominated the first half against Artland Dragons only to lose in the final stages and fall to 1-3. Power forward Mario Austin, small forward Matteo Soragna and shooting guard Reece Gaines each scored 18 points for Treviso, but no other Italian player hit for more than nine points. And the Artland backcourt did a good job stopping Benetton point guard Lionel Chalmers, who scored just six points (10 below his average coming into the game); and center Nana Mensah-Bonsu, who had just two points (nine below his average). Mahmudi's team was especially effective from long range, hitting 12-of-23 (52%) three-pointers. But the Germans dominated the paint, holding Treviso to 44% shooting inside the arc and out-rebounded the Italians 33-17. With four teams at either 2-2 or 1-3 in Group H, everything is up for grabs. And Mahmudi's troops know that a victory at home leaves them in the running for the elimination round despite all the struggles they have had so far. ASK Riga evened its record at 2-2 with a convincing 20-point victory at home over Pau-Orthez. Small forward Dwayne Broyles and reserve center Raitis Grafs both scored 14 points in leading five players in double figures. And power forward Aerick Sanders added nine points and 10 rebounds. Coach Ramunas Butautas's team was especially solid defensively, holding the French to just 39% shooting from the field and forcing 17 turnovers. ASK gave up just eight points in the first quarter and set the tone for the rest of the game. With both teams knowing what's on the line, expect a high-intensity battle which could be decided by Treviso's three-point shooters.

Benetton improved to 2-3 in the Group H standings, while ASK Riga dropped to 3-2. Benetton exploded with a 14-1 run in the last three minutes of the game fueled by Angelo Gigli and Pops Mensah-Bonsu to take a crucial win in come-from-behind fashion. Lionel Chalmers had 15 points, Gigli amassed a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds and Mario Austin contributed with 12 points and 8 boards for Benetton. Sandis Valters was the main contributor for ASK Riga with 18 points, while Aerick Sanders was the only other player to score in double figures for the guests collecting 15.

Aerick Sanders - ASK RigaASK Riga started on fire as Valters and Dwayne Broyles made it 2-8, but Austin scored 6 points for Benetton to tie things at 8-8. The teams exchanged the lead in a very balanced first quarter to finish on 15-15 after 10 minutes. The game remained close, 22-22, with 3:30 left till halftime, when Valters and Marko Antonjevic sparked a 3-11 surge to put Riga ahead. Gigli hit from downtown to make it 28-33 for ASK Riga at the intermission. The visitors were still on fire, opening the third quarter by taking a double-figure margin, 30-42, eventually forcing Benetton to call timeout. Three consecutive baskets from Gaines and a basket from beyond the arc by Austin brought the home team closer at 40-42, but the guests remained ahead 50-54 at the end of the third quarter. Chalmers triple and Gaines mid-range jumper restored Benetton's lead. Valters gave ASK a 59-62 cushion before being fouled out. That's when Benetton's incredible final run started. Matteo Soragna started things and Mensah-Bonsu followed by slamming the ball to put the hosts ahead on 63-62, while Gaines hit from downtown to secure the 10-point win.

Head Coaches

MAHMUTI, OKTAY
Benetton Tamoil
"At the middle of the third quarter, we trailed 30-42 and the game that was escaping. We used a timeout and I told the players that defense, and playing with intensity and enthusiasm are what will turn the game around. We must learn from this lesson. If we do not play intense, we are not a competitive squad. We cannot allow us to have all these ups and downs like in the first 25 minutes. We have only one road to follow, that one of the intensity and the character that we have demonstrated today. The players must understand how important it is to play with the maximum intensity."
