THE TAKE

Group H will have a sole leader after co-leaders BC Kyiv and Artland Dragons - both 3-1 - face off in the Ukraine capital. Coach Tomo Mahoric's Kyiv suffered its first defeat of the season, losing at Lukoil Academic The Ukrainians led with about four minutes left but couldn't stop the Bulgarian three-point shooters and crumbled in the final stages. Shooting guard Manuchar Markoishvili's 19 points paced four players in double figures but only seven players scored for Mahoric, who must worry about his bench against a deep and talented German club. Kyiv also committed 16 turnovers while only forcing 10 Lukoil turnovers. Coach Chris Fleming's Artland Dragons meanwhile improved to 3-1 with an impressive home victory over Benetton Tamoil. The Germans trailed by 13 points at halftime and never gave up in coming back and holding off the Italians in the final minutes. Center Adam Chubb has become a force in the paint, averaging 23.5 points and five rebounds in his past two games. Playmaker John Goldsberry has been excellent as well, dishing out eight assists in each of the past two games while scoring 14 points against Treviso. And shooting guard Lamont McIntosh has averaged a solid 13.8 points per game to complete the big three for Fleming. Power forward Matt Freije has not yet found his top form though he's averaging 10 points, and Fleming is waiting for small forward Terrance Thomas to finally pick up his game. Looking at the up-coming schedules for these two teams shows that Artland will be playing four of the next five games on the road, while Kyiv host Benetton Treviso next week.

Artur Drozdov posted 22 points to push BC Kyiv to a crucial 87-66 home win over Artland Dragons on Tuesday that gave the hosts sole possession of first place in Group H. Kyiv, which entered the game tied with Artland for first place, improved to 4-1. Next up for Kyiv is Benetton Tamoil. Meanwhile the Dragons, now at 3-2, visit Pau-Orthez next week. Kyiv exploded for an 18-2 run early in the third quarter to take control of the game for good. Pooh Jeter played all 40 minutes and scored 16 for the winners, while Manuchar Markoishvili posted 12 and Joshua Davis and Marcus Faison 9 apiece for BC Kyiv. Artland Dragons got 15 from Earl Rowland and 10 from Adam Chubb.

Paul Johnson gave the Dragons an early 4-8 advantage, but Drozdov pushed the hosts ahead 9-8 at the midway point of the quarter. John Goldsberry hit from downtown before Faison tied it at 16-16. The first period finished with Kyiv ahead 22-18 thanks to a three-point-play from big man Jacob Jaacks. Early in the second quarter, Markoishvili enlarged the cushion to 25-19, but Rich Melzer from the foul line and Darius Hall kept Artland close. Jeter's triple made it 39-30 and Kyiv remained in front 43-35 at halftime. Jeter extended the difference for the first time to double figures at the beginning of the third quarter and again fueled his side from downtown to go up 52-37. Jeter capped the 18-2 run from mid range to make it 61-37. Artland tried to respond, getting 5 points in a row from Rowland, but a three-point-play by Drozdov made it 69-46 after 30 minutes. Lamont Mcintosh scored a triple for Artland early in the fourth, but the game was practically over with Vladimir Krstic scoring from beyond the arc for Kyiv and Drozdov adding points to his tally in the closing minutes.

Head Coaches

MAHORIC, TOMO
BC Kyiv
"First of all, I want to congratulate my players - they did a really good job. We won by more than 20 points, but I want to say that Artland is a very well tactically-prepared team, maybe the best we played this season. The third quarter was crucial, but during the last quarter we needed to control the rhythm of the game, that's why Pooh Jeter played all 40 minutes. Now we have a good position in the group, but to be sure, that we are in the next round, we need to win more two games. I hope, that we will do this as soon as possible."
FLEMING, CHRIS
Artland Dragons
"BC Kyiv is the best team we played so far. They have a really good roster, they play very balanced on offense and very smart on defense. We have a lot of young players and this game is a very good lesson for us. But now we still have good chances to be in the next round and we will fight for this."

Players

JETER, POOH
BC Kyiv
"I agree with coach. Artland is a really strong opponent. Tonight the main thing was that we played totally according to our plan. All this time we worked very hard, and we will continue, because the season is very long and in the future we'll have a lot of important games against good teams."
ROWLAND, EARL
Artland Dragons
"I agree with the coach. We played against a very strong team and it's a good lesson for us. So we'll continue working hard and will try to improve our goals to be in the next round."
