THE TAKE

Guildford Heat hopes to finally grab its first victory in Group A when it entertains Turk Telekom. Coach Paul James's British team fell to 0-4 by losing at Siauliai by 15 points - the narrowest margin of defeat thus far. Small forward Tony Dorsey had a great game with 20 points and 10 rebounds while captain and power forward Michael Martin added 17 and nine for his best game of the competition. But it was not enough for Guildford, which made just 42% of its shots compared to 52% by the Lithuanians. James's team clearly does not have enough firepower. But the team did get some good news when severely-injured star guard Brian Dux was cleared to fly back to the United States on a specially-equipped medical jet. The British team is undoubtedly relieved to see that Dux apparently has gotten past the worst stage, and a victory would be a great present to him - especially in front of the home fans. Turk Telekom meanwhile looks to improve to 4-1 after beating Alba Berlin last week. Coach Ercument Sunter's team shot 51% and committed just 10 turnovers and ended up pulling away in the fourth quarter with some big outside shooting by guard Khalid El-Amin, who scored 23 points and dished out six assists. Power forward Michael Wright added 24 points and is the ULEB Cup's leading scorer at a 24.0 ppg clip. Impressive was the Turks' defense, which held Berlin to just 41% shooting and forced 16 turnovers. But Sunter's worries about the bench continue. Besides the dynamic duo of El-Amin and Wright, center Erwin Dudley scored 17 points and small forward Chris Williams had 11 points off the bench. But only two other players tallied points - seven in total - leaving Sunter wondering what he would do if his starters got into foul troubles.

Dudley, El-Amin and Wright combined for all points in a 0-11 run that gave the guests a 33-54 lead. Dorsey and Gilbert got the Heat closer, 42-56, at halftime. El-Amin, Wright and Dudley shined after the break, allowing Turk Telekom to get a 42-65 margin. Dean Williams and James Jones stroke from downtown but only managed to make it a 17-point game at 50-67. El-Amin led a 0-14 run that sealed the outcome, 50-81, still in the third quarter. Another basket by El-Amin fixed the score at 52-83 after 30 minutes. The Heat kept struggling to score while El-Amin was on fire. He buried two more shots from downtown for a 37-point Turk Telekom lead, 54-91. It was all said and done, as the Heat need to improve right away while Turk Telekom got closer to the elimination rounds.
