THE STAKES

Khimki (3-1) comes off its first Eurocup campaign loss, succumbing to Donetsk, which also won the head-to-head point differential with the Russian side. Khimki advances if it beats Aris (1-3) and the latter needs to win to stay alive. Khimki is unbeaten at home and won big in Thessaloniki. Aris is capable of winning on the road, doing so twice during the regular season.

THE TAKE

The matchups under the glass will be critical, with Khimki’s formidable trio of Kresmir Loncar, Matt Nielsen and Sergey Monya putting Sam Muldrow, Giorgos Bogris and Christos Tapoutos to the test. Khimki’s size and physical power will be a factor defensively as well. Guard Zoran Planinic has the size down low against Dimitiros Verginis, but could have problems with the shorter man’s speed.

Quotes Head Coaches

KURTINAITIS, RIMAS
BC Khimki
"Comparing with our previous game, Aris lost a very important player in Dominic James, who was like a major element in the chemistry of coach Alexandris. I suppose this loss will affect the team's game. But it’s nothing to talk about – under successful concatenation of circumstances Aris still has chances to go further so this very meeting will be important for both teams. They play like a united team without vivid stars but Tapoutos, Verginis and Davis performed nice and we had some problems with them. Hopefully our aggression in defense and concentration will help us win."
ALEXANDRIS, VANGELIS
Aris BSA 2003
"We are going to play against a very difficult opponent. Khimki has a full roster and they are very strong when they play in their home court arena. We have to do our best in order to be competitive and to pay attention in the small details which makes the difference."

Players

KELATI, THOMAS
BC Khimki
"We play with Aris for the second time, now it will be a different team. They lost one important player in Dominic James, who left to Partizan, so I suppose it will be a difficult game but we play at our home court and need to win. No matter that our rhythm now is up and down, we just came from a good win over Spartak, got confident and want to fight for the first place in our group. In Thessaloniki we played very well, smart and it was a great game, we were focused for 40 minutes. If we come out tomorrow and play for 40 minutes focused again it could be very hard for Aris to stop us."
VERGINIS, DIMITRIOS
Aris BSA 2003
"We know that it’s going to be a difficult game for us. We will play against one of the best teams in Eurocup especially whenever they play in their home court arena. Nevertheless we have to play as best as we can. The most important thing is to not let Khimki to play their game and to control the pace. We have to play very good in defense and to be clever in our offensive choices."
Alexey Zhukanenko - BC Khimki (photo bckhimki.ru)BC Khimki advanced to the Eurocup quarterfinals by downing Aris BSA 2003 Thessaloniki 88-72 on Tuesday in Group J. Aris, which fell to 1-4, was eliminated. Kresmir Loncar led the way for Khimki with 14 points, Sergey Monya added 13 with 9 rebounds and 5 assists, Zoran Planinc bagged 13 with 5 assists, Alexey Zukhanenko nailed 11 and Thomas Kelati 10. Dimitris Verginis chipped in 19 for Aris, Christos Tapoutos drilled 15 and Ronald Davis 14.

Loncar opened the scoring, but soon Verginis tied the score with a reverse layup. Davis stole the ball and completed a three-point-pay into the break, which was followed by Vitaly Fridzon for the 7-5 for the hosts. Davis from downtown put again Aris ahead, but Loncar answered from the baseline and few second later finished the fastbreak with a layup to lead 11-8. Verginis nailed 8 points in a row to put Aris in front 11-16 and force Khimki to call a timeout. Fridzon from long distance and Loncar again rolling to the basket tied the game at 16-16. Verginis from the foul line put again ahead the Greek side, but Egor Vyaltsev slammed in the ball for the 21-20, before Sergio Kerusch tied at 22-22 as the first quarter ended. Tapoutos gave a 22-24 margin to Aris, but Kelati opened fire from long distance and Monya capped an 8-0 run to give Khimki a 30-24 cushion. Giorgos Bogris finished with a right jump hook to go on 30-28, but Kelati and an alley-oop dunk by Zukhanenko extended the difference to 35-28 for Khimki. Free throws from Tapoutos and Kerusch kept Aris alive at 37-34 with three minutes left. A Planinc penetration and two three-point plays by Mickeal Gelabale and Zukhanenko gave the first double digit margin to the home team, 44-34. Sam Muldrow dunked, but Zukhanenko used his speed to run the floor and finish the break, before Bogris from the foul line and Chris Quinn beating the buzzer made it 48-38 at halftime.

Planinic with a layup after a perfect cut in the paint extended the margin to 55-42. Tapoutos answered with a pull-up jumper, but Planinic again and Loncar with 2 on the break made it 59-42. Verginis beat the 24-second buzzer from nine meters, Monya split free throws and Tapoutos hit another triple for 50-40. Monya rejected the visitors’ attempt of a comeback with another bomb. Dan Mavreides nailed a mid-range jumper, but Planinic went all the way and seconds later nailed a jumper to establish a 68-52 margin for Khimki. Kelati’s pull up jumper and Davis’s layup fixed 70-54 at the end of the third quarter. Loncar extended the cushon to 72-54 to begin the last quarter, a three-point-play from Davis and a jump hook by Bogris allowed to Aris to stay alive at 73-61, but a Planinic jumper gave again a big 79-63 cushion to the home team. Quinn pushed Khimki to 85-67 en route to a win and a ticket to the quarters.

Head Coaches

KURTINAITIS, RIMAS
BC Khimki
"I’m glad we won, this victory was very important for us. We had two goals before this game: to test all the players and, of course, win. Maybe not everything was okay. Even when we had an advantage, there were no guarantees that everything eventually would be fine. Now all the formalities are done, we moved on to the next stage. Some moments leave much to be desired, but it’s a matter of a training process."
ALEXANDRIS, VANGELIS
Aris BSA 2003
"It was a very hard game for us. We knew that we would face a top Eurocup team. They have the best chances to win this competition. It was a descent game if you compare the two teams. We finish our Eurocup performance next Tuesday. From the very beginning we had a goal the of advancing to the next round and we achieved it. I would like to wish BC Khimki good luck, because this team deserves to win."

Players

ZHUKANENKO, ALEXEY
BC Khimki
"We played well today. Perhaps the rival prepared not very seriously for this game, but we were more concentrated and motivated. In the first half we skidded, maybe examined our opponent and tried not to make mistakes in defense and in offense. After the break, we became more impudent and it was better for us. I can point out Verginis and Tapoutos in the Aris squad. They are the current leaders of the team."
