An all-French clash for a ticket to the third and final stage of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Qualifying Rounds begins on Tuesday when Le Mans Sarthe Basket hosts Asvel Basket. Le Mans, the defending French League runner up, reached the second stage of the qualifying rounds by sweeping Turkish club Banvit BK in the opening round series. Le Mans has plenty to smile about after getting a balanced effort up and down the roster. The big gun in the second leg was promising point guard Antoine Diot, who showed his back injury is a thing of the past with 18 points, 3 assists and 4 steals. Diot was joined by big men J.P. Batista and Alain Koffi as the only three Le Mans players to average double figures in points for the game. Asvel advanced from the opening round with an aggregate win over Montenegrin champion Buducnost. The 2009 French League winner dropped the first leg by 5 points, but won the second at home 85-76 in overtime. In the deciding game, Asvel outrebounded its opponent by 12 as both Davon Jefferson and Andrija Zizic posted double doubles. Forward A.D. Vassallo paced the Asvel attack with 20 points. The game will surely be an interesting one with many ties between players and coaches from both sides. Asvel head coach Vincent Collet was the Le Mans boss for eight seasons and also coached Koffi on the French national team this summer. Meanwhile Le Mans winger Ben Dewar arrives from Asvel, where he spent the past two seasons. Another shared characteristic between the two teams as that they are both in the Euroleague Qualifying Rounds for the second straight season. But whereas Asvel reached the Euroleague last season, Le Mans was eliminated in the first round. To avoid gong home early this time, Le Mans will aim to maximize its homecourt advantage. Though both teams feature strong lineups, the key matchups could well be inside, where Batista and Koffi take on Zizic and Jefferson. If either team can control the paint, it will instantly become the favorite to win the series.
