One of France's signature clubs will have a chance to reach the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Regular Season, but it's up to Asvel Basket and Le Mans to settle between them which team that will be. Their two-game qualifying series ends Friday in Lyon-Villeurbanne with Asvel ejoying home-court advantage but Le Mans holding a 10-point lead. Le Mans won their opener at home on Tuesday by 85-75 thanks to great tenacity until the finish of what had been a tie game early in the fourth quarter. Le Mans posted a 15-7 offensive rebounding advantage which, along with 17 turnovers for Asvel, spelled the difference in that game. Most tellingly, five different Le Mans players had 2 or more offensive rebounds, including a game-high 3 by diminutive point guard Marc-Antoine Pellin, which shows they outhustled Asvel as a team. Neither team has relied on deep shooting, so the activity around the basket is likely to tip this series one way or the other. Asvel's major bright spot so far in the qualifying rounds is swingman A.D. Vassalo, who has been a sure scorer and piled up 29 points against Le Mans. His ability to drive strong, shoot deep and draw fouls make Vassallo a true threat. Le Mans will have to limit him if it hopes not to squander its advantage. Vassallo has a co-hort in Mickael Gelabale on the wing and Andrija Zizic in the paint, but Asvel needs big man Davon Jefferson and the backcourt duo of Cliff Hammonds and Paul Lacombe to step up on Friday. Le Mans got a better spread of production in Game 1, when Ryvon Covile didn't miss a shot and led the rebounding charge, while Antoine Diot did a litte of everything. Charles Kahudi, Alex Acker and Ben Dewar will all be asked to help stop Vassallo. Whether they can do that, or he succeeds in motivating his teammates and the Asvel fans, could be a deciding factor in the game and the series. The winner will advance to the third and final qualifying round next week, probably against Khimki Moscow Region, the probable winner over Budivelnik of Ukraine, for a winner-take-all shot at the 2010 regular season!
