THE TAKE

One of France's signature clubs will have a chance to reach the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Regular Season, but it's up to Asvel Basket and Le Mans to settle between them which team that will be. Their two-game qualifying series ends Friday in Lyon-Villeurbanne with Asvel ejoying home-court advantage but Le Mans holding a 10-point lead. Le Mans won their opener at home on Tuesday by 85-75 thanks to great tenacity until the finish of what had been a tie game early in the fourth quarter. Le Mans posted a 15-7 offensive rebounding advantage which, along with 17 turnovers for Asvel, spelled the difference in that game. Most tellingly, five different Le Mans players had 2 or more offensive rebounds, including a game-high 3 by diminutive point guard Marc-Antoine Pellin, which shows they outhustled Asvel as a team. Neither team has relied on deep shooting, so the activity around the basket is likely to tip this series one way or the other. Asvel's major bright spot so far in the qualifying rounds is swingman A.D. Vassalo, who has been a sure scorer and piled up 29 points against Le Mans. His ability to drive strong, shoot deep and draw fouls make Vassallo a true threat. Le Mans will have to limit him if it hopes not to squander its advantage. Vassallo has a co-hort in Mickael Gelabale on the wing and Andrija Zizic in the paint, but Asvel needs big man Davon Jefferson and the backcourt duo of Cliff Hammonds and Paul Lacombe to step up on Friday. Le Mans got a better spread of production in Game 1, when Ryvon Covile didn't miss a shot and led the rebounding charge, while Antoine Diot did a litte of everything. Charles Kahudi, Alex Acker and Ben Dewar will all be asked to help stop Vassallo. Whether they can do that, or he succeeds in motivating his teammates and the Asvel fans, could be a deciding factor in the game and the series. The winner will advance to the third and final qualifying round next week, probably against Khimki Moscow Region, the probable winner over Budivelnik of Ukraine, for a winner-take-all shot at the 2010 regular season!

Angel Daniel Vassallo - Asvel Basket (photo asvelbasket.com)Le Mans Sarthe Basket overcame a tough situation and stayed alive in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Qualifying Rounds despite a 71-63 road loss against Asvel Basket in Game 2 on their Round 2 two-way series on Friday. Le Mans had registered a 85-75 home win in Game 1 and reached Round 3 due to points differential. As such, Le Mans faces BC Khimki in Round 3 in a direct fight for a Euroleague regular season spot while Asvel will play the 2010-11 Eurocup. Antoine Diot paced Le Mans with 18 points. He had 10 of those in the final 5 minutes to lead the guests to the next round. Charles Kahudi added 11 while Ben Dewar had 10 for Le Mans. Davon Jefferson led Asvel with 18 points and 13 rebounds. AD Vassallo added 17 points while Cliff Hammonds had 11 for the hosts, that led 54-42 midway through the fourth quarter. Diot struck twice from downtown and had 9 points in a 5-14 run that put Le Mans ahead in the series for good, 59-56. Asvel managed to get a 68-59 lead in the final seconds but Marc-Antoine Pellin and Alex Acker were ice cold from the foul line to lead Le Mans to the next round.

Dewar got Le Mans going with back-to-back baskets and Diot dunked it off a steal for a 0-6 Le Mans lead. Asvel went scoreless for almost 4 minutes until Jefferson stepped up with a layup. Andrija Zizic added a put-back basket that Diot erased with a jumper. Asvel had adjusted its defense and Jefferson shined with 5 unanswered points - including a dunk - that gave the hosts their first lead, 9-8. Acker nailed a jumper but Vassallo bettered that with his first triple and Paul Lacombe added a layup for a 14-10 score. Free throws by Acker got Le Mans within 14-12 after 10 minutes. Edwin Jackson sank a jumper early in the second quarter but Alain Koffi followed a dunk with a mid-range jumper to put Le Mans back ahead, 16-17. Hammonds stepped up with a layup, igniting a 7-0 run in which Kim Tillie shined with consecutive baskets, good for a 23-17 Asvel lead. Le Mans struggled to score for 3 long minutes until Kahudi sank free throws. Asvel kept controlling the game with good defense. Meanwhile, Vassallo scored again and a dunk by Tillie made Le Mans call timeout at 28-19. A three-pointer by Dewar and free throws by Hammonds fixed the halftime score at 30-22.

Kahudi scored down low immediately after the break but Jefferson and Hammonds fueled a 6-0 run that allowed Asvel to get the lead in the series, 36-24, for the first time tonight. Kahudi sank free throws and fed Dewar for a three-pointer that brought Le Mans within 38-29. Jefferson scored again and a layup by Mickael Gelabale made it a 13-point game, 42-29. JP Batista had 4 points in a 0-6 Le Mans run but Asvel did not panic. Jefferson and Hammonds kept pacing Asvel and free throws by Vassallo allowed the hosts to get a 49-35 margin after 30 minutes. A three-point play by Acker and a jumper by Diot put Le Mans back ahead in the series, 49-40. Pellin soon added a jumper but Gelabale struck from downtown and a layup by Vassallo send the crowd to their feet at 54-42. Kahudi made free throws and Diot followed a triple with a layup to bring Le Mans back to life, 55-49, with under 4 minutes left. Vassallo sank free throws that an outstanding Diot bettered with a three-pointer. Kahudi also struck from downtown and a foul shot by Diot seemed to seal the outcome, 59-56. An outstanding Jefferson shined in the final minute to give Asvel some hope at 68-59. Pellin and Acker combined for 4-of-4 free throws in the final seconds to seal the outcome down the stretch, allowing all Le Mans to dream on in the Euroleague Qualifying Rounds!

Head Coaches

COLLET, VINCENT
Asvel Basket
"The first game and the 10-point defeat made it difficult to change the trend. At 14 points ahead, Le Mans could have let go and set us free. Eventually, we didn't score and Le Mans immediately came back. So we stressed out. We were tired, too. Antoine Diot and Charles Kahudi played great and made the difference in the last minutes."

Players

GELABALE, MICKAEL
Asvel Basket
"I think we should have calmed the game down to let time go and keep our advantage. Unfortunately we couldn't and we paid immediately. Of course, we're disappointed. Our first goal was to qualify for the Euroleague. We 've had some problems to manage the last minute of the games in the qualifying rounds. We haven't been playing together for long, we have to work more to erase these mistakes. We need to use this experience for the championship games."
