THE STAKES

This is a very important game for Oostende, which has already lost a home game and remains winless. For its part, Asvel has 1-1 record and needs the win to remain competitive in a tough Group D. Historically, these two have played each other four times: splitting home victorires in the 1980-81 Korac Cup, while Asvel took two in the 2001-02 Euroleague regular season.

THE TAKE

Stopping Kim Tillie and Hilton Armstrong priority number one for Telenet, followed by the matchup between veterans Veselin Petrovic and Dijon Thompson. Asvel has the same shooting percentage for both two- and three-pointers (44%), but Oostende is only hitting 28% of its shots from beyond the arc and averaging a mere 63 total points per game, both of which will have to improve to beat Asvel. Coach Jean Marc Jaumin will be looking for strong fan support in Telenet’s Sleuyter Arena.

Quotes Head Coaches

JAUMIN, JEAN MARC
Telenet Oostende
"Asvel Basket is a team dependent from its "Chef d'Orchestre" in the person of Tony Parker. We will have to focus on our own game and not on who's playing on the other side. Respect before and after the game, but during the game not that much or we will lose. We have been lifting our playing level even against teams as Charleroi and Valencia, both away games. So at home and with the help of our fans, it must be possible to stay alive in this very difficult group."

Players

BOOKER, CHRIS
Telenet Oostende
"The entire team will be looking forward to the game against Asvel Basket. We have had some difficult losses in the past two Eurocup games. This game gives us the chance to get a win before we start the second round of Eurocup games."
Asvel Basket joined a three-way tie for first place in Group D by ruling for the last 25 minutes of a no-doubt-about-it 53-70 road win against Telindus Oostende on Tuesday. Asvel is now 2-1 and locked in a tie for the group lead with Lukoil Academic and Valencia Basket. Oostende falls to 0-3 and a true danger zone as far as reaching the Last 16 with just three regular season games left. Oostende led 22-19 midway through the second quarter, when Asvel turned on the jets and pulled steadily away to a solid win. Kim Tillie paced the winners with 14 points on 7-for-10 two-point shooting. Hilton Armstrong and Edwin Jackson came next with 12 poins each, while Leo Westermann added 11. Asvel's big weapon was defense, as Oostende's top sccorers were Chris Booker with 11 points and Dragisa Drobnjak with 10. Booker added 12 rebounds for a double-double and 4 steals.

Tillie got the visitors from Asvel on the board first and Armstrong kept them ahead 2-3 with a free throw, but it was all Oostende after that. Four players hit layups before Veselin Petrovic made it an 11-0 run and a 13-3 lead from downtown. And Oostende wasn't done yet. Booker's fourth basket without a miss extended the run, but then Asvel started one of its own, with Bangaly Fofana's free throws starting a 2-8 response that cut the difference to 17-11 after 10 minutes. Tilie kept the mometum in Asvel's direction until Jackson's jumper tied 19-19, making it a 4-16 run for the visitors. Dusan Djordjevic struck from long range to take the lead again for Oostende, but soon enough, Jackson was taking it twice for Asvel, on a dunk-and-free throw combination followed by another layup at 24-26. For 4 minutes near the end of the quarter Asvel's defense blanked the hosts, but Kennedy Winston and Petrovic forged a tie with 9 seconds left only to see Tillie finish the half as he started it, giving Asvel a two-point lead on the buzzer, 28-30.

Oostende took the momentum and the lead back after halftime as Petrovic and Winston scored 4 points each in a 10-2 run to a 38-32 lead. Jackson again struck back for Asvel, with a three-pointer, and when Dijon Thompson copied him a minute later, the teams were locked in a 40-40 tie. Drobnjak broke it in Oostende's favor, but Fofana's subsequent pair of inside shots suddenly put Asvel up 42-49 after 30 minutes. Tillie and Drobnjak exchanged baskets to open the fourth quarter before Asvel lifted off with 15 unanswered points in a row, starting with a triple by Westermann and featuring 6 points by Armstrong. Just like that, it was a 20-point Asvel advanage, 44-64. That was more than enough for Asvel's defense which finished the game having allowed Oosende just 15 points in the last 16 minutes.

Head Coaches

JAUMIN, JEAN MARC
Telenet Oostende
"We started the game with a lot of energy leading 15-3 after 5 minutes, but the afterwards we only scored 38 points for the remainder of the game. Why? We did not change things but I saw us lose confidence. I had the impression our offense is dictating our defense. When our offense did not work, we stopped playing defense. It's a pity because with a good start we could have done something in the Eurocup. Now it is important to get everybody in the same direction again."
VINCENT, PIERRE
Asvel Basket
"I am satisfied of winning this game but there are a lot of things I am not happy with tonight. That's my job as a coach. We did not convert easy options when we needed to and that is what we have to work on."

Players

DROBNJAK, DRAGISA
Telenet Oostende
"We expected Asvel to play with a lot of energy and that the guys who did not play when Parker and Turiaf were playing, were going to step up. And they did. Tonight we did not play hard in defense. I do not know what happened but I think it is a mental problem. We were not playing bad but had a tough month losing our recent games by little. This must have effected us mentally. I was brought up in basket that no matter what happens in offense, you can always make up in defense. We did not do that and as such I can understand our fans were not happy."
LACOMBE, PAUL
Asvel Basket
"We knew that we could win, despite the absence of Parker and Turiaf. We wanted to show we could do without them and we succeeded. We started the game very bad but we knew to respond physically in defense, after which we were able to develop our game. This victory gives the players and the club great satisfaction."
