THE TAKE

Two teams from opposite ends of the Group B standings meet on Tuesday with much different goals in mind. First-placed BG Goettingen advances to the Last 16 with a win, while Asvel Basket must win to keep its Last 16 hopes alive. If Asvel loses and Hemofarm wins in Tuesday’s other Group B affair, Asvel will see its Last 16 chances disappear. Goettingen improved to 3-0 last week with a 67-79 win at Hemrofarm Stada thanks to Mike Scott and Dwayne Anderson, who scored 26 points each. Asvel dropped to 1-3 last week with a loss at Besiktas ColaTurka despite a brilliant game from swingman Matt Walsh, who recorded the Eurocup’s fifth-ever triple double with 13 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists. Walsh showed he enjoys playing Goettingen’s run-and-gun style when he netted 30 points when the teams met in Week 1. However Walsh also committed 10 turnovers and Goettingen won 80-88 in France. This time Asvel hopes to be ready for the Goettingen onslaught. Head coach John Patrick uses a deep roster to attack nonstop, with guards Trent Meacham and Louis Dale also playing important roles. They will be joined by Robert Kulawick in trying to find the recipe to stop Walsh and Asvel point guard Cliff Hammonds. Another important duel takes place at forward, where Scott and Anderson will match up against Davon Jefferson and Mickael Gelabale. Center Jason Boone will be needed this time against Asvel’s Bangaly Fofana and Andrija Zizic. Walsh and Anderson have been among the competition’s brightest players this season, with the former ranked among the leaders in performance index ranking and latter among the leaders in scoring. Another big game from either of them could be the determining outcome in the result.

Matt Walsh - Asvel BasketAsvel Basket stayed in the race to make it to the Last 16 in Group B by rallying from a 13-point deficit to down BG Goettingen 76-78 on the road on Tuesday. Asvel improved to 2-3 and is third in Group B. It will reach the Last 16 if it beats Hemofarm at home by at least 4 points and Goettingen wins one of its two games against Besiktas in the next 7 days. Meanwhile, Goettingen dropped to 3-1 and needs one more win to make it to the Last 16. Davon Jefferson paced the winners with 22 points on 8-of-12 two-pointers and 10 rebounds. Matt Walsh had 17, including the game-winning layup down the stretch. Mickael Gelabale added 13 while Andrija Zizic got 10 for Asvel. Robert Kulawick led 6 Goettingen players in double digits with 13 points. Trenton Meacham and Dwayne Anderson each added 12 while Michael Meeks, Jason Boone and Mike Scott had 10 apiece for the hosts, that led 54-41 midway through the third quarter. Walsh and an outstanding Jefferson fueled the guests' comeback while 3-of-3 free throws by Gelabale tied it at 76-76. Adam Waleskowski missed a key shot and Walsh kept Asvel alive in the competition down the stretch.

Asvel found an early go-to guy in Zizic, who had a layup and a jumper in an 1-7 opening run. Scott stepped up for Goettingen with a jumper and Waleskowski added a layup but an unstoppable Zizic and a jumper by Jefferson kept the guests ahead, 5-11. Jefferson took over with a put-back dunk and Gelabale struck from downtown to make it a double-digit game, 5-16. Meeks took over with consecutive three-pointers and Kulawicz copied him soon after that for a 14-18 Goettingen deficit. Meeks made free throws and Boone added a dunk but Gelabale and Matt Walsh kept the guests ahead, 18-22. Meacham followed free throws with a jumper for a 22-22 tie after 10 minutes. Jefferson kept pacing Asvel with a put-back basket but Louis Dale and Meacham completed the hosts' comeback, 26-24, early in the second quarter. Leo Westermann downed a three-pointer and Kim Tillie dunked it to give the guests some fresh air, 26-29. It didn't last long, however, as a three-pointer by Jermaine Raffington ignited an 11-0 run that Scott capped with a dunk to give Goettingen a 37-29 margin. Walsh split free throws but Kulawick gave the hosts a 39-30 lead. Walsh stepped up with 4 points in a 0-6 run that allowed Asvel to get as close as 39-36 at halftime.

Boone scored down low immediately after the break and Anderson added a put-back layup for a 43-36 Goettingen lead. Kulawicz buried his second three-pointer but Jefferson and Zizic kept Asvel within 46-41. Goettingen improved its defense to make Asvel go scoreless for almost 3 minutes. Meanwhile, Boone and Kulawick combined for all points in an 8-0 run that made it a 13-point game, 54-41. Jeferson shined with a dunk but Meeks matched with free throws. Bangaly Fofana stepped up with a layup while free throws by Walsh and another dunk by Jefferson got the guests within 58-49 after 30 minutes. Walsh and Paul Lacombe buried back-to-back triples to ignite Asvel's comeback early in the fourth quarter. Jefferson soon added a layup to make it a three-point game, 60-57. Scott and Gelabale traded three-pointers but a dunk by Anderson and a layup off a steal by Meacham gave Goettingen some fresh air, 67-60, with over 4 minutes left. Walsh kept pacing Asvel with a three-point play and free throws by Jefferson got the guests within 68-67. Anderson sank a key three-pointer and Scott matched Gelabale's jumper with a dunk for a 73-69 score with 2 minutes left. Jefferson stayed on fire with a three-point play and Lacombe split free throws for a 73-73 tie. Anderson sank 3-of-4 free throws but Gelabale bettered that with 3-of-3 foul shots for a 76-76 tie. Waleskowski missed a layup and Walsh became the hero for Asvel with the game-winning basket!

Head Coaches

PATRICK, JOHN MICHAEL
BG Goettingen
"We started out today very weak. We saw a lack of concentration in the first three or four minutes of the game. We fought back and had control of the game. Against the Asvel zone defense, we lost our structure and our team play. That as much as the dumb foul at the end cost us the game. When we look at the game we can say if we had been more concentrated in 15 to 20 situations, then we would have had the chance to win. It was a big shot by Matt Walsh. Again we had problems with the clock at the end of the game. So we have to take a look at it and see if it had an effect on the outcome of the game. But as a coach I am disappointed that we made a poor decision in crunch time."
GHRIB, NORDINE
Asvel Basket
"I am satisfied with this win. We knew it would be a tough place to play at. We started the game very strong. Midway through the game I was a bit afraid the game would slip away. We switched to zone defense, which proved to be the right decision. This win is very important for us. It's still possible for us to advance to the next round. I am happy with the way my players executed the game plan. "

Players

MEACHAM, TRENTON
BG Goettingen
"It was a tough loss. There are a lot of things we can improve on. At the start of the game they really took it to us. We have to play 40 minutes. At the end of the game, we didn’t execute our game plan. We did not play what we wanted to. They came back to get us. "
JEFFERSON, DAVON
Asvel Basket
"It was a tough win. We didn’t play as good as we can, but still pulled up a win. That’s the most important thing, especially on the road. We haven’t been that good on the road this year. We knew we were coming into a tough fight. We kept our hopes alive in the Eurocup. It was a big win for us tonight."
