THE TAKE

At 1-3 and 2-2, respectively, in Group D, Hapoel Gilboa Galil and Cedevita Zagreb still have a good shot of making it to the Last 16 round with a victory in their Tuesday matchup, though for the Israeli squad, it’s a must win game if they wish to stay in the race. While the hosts’ only victory of the Regular Season came precisely against Cedevita in the opener, the Croatian side saw their two game winning streak snapped last week in Athens versus Aris, and need to win to make up for lost ground against the Group leaders. A little vengeance factor also might be in play, as the opening home loss really set Cedevita back in the hunt for the next round. The Week 1 result came courtesy of Jack McClinton, who scored 18 points to lead six Galil scorers in double figures, and Rodney Green’s near triple double. Dagan Yivzori added 16 points for Galil, which shot 10 for 19 from downtown and outrebounded Cedevita 28-41 to help mask the visitors’ 16 turnovers. The hosts shouldn’t have it easier this time on the road, and will look to Trent Plaisted and Corsley Edwards to set the tone inside, where Ido Kozikaro stands as the lone pure center for Hapoel, even though it’s forwards Warren Carter, Green and Tyler Wilkerson who take care of business on the boards. Wilkerson and Carter added 15 points apiece in Week 1 and playmaker Gal Mekel had 11 points and 7 assists. It will be interesting to see if Dontaye Draper has sized up Mekel in their second head to head battle, as the Cedevita point guard totaled the same points but 2 less assists in their previous matchup. Backcourt mate Marino Bavdaric and forwards Vedran Vukusic and Damjan Rudez should lead the charge in the scoring department, though shooting guard Hrvoje Kovacevic did go off for 16 in the opener and Robert Troha also added 10 points. Galil needs to find a way to win down the stretch, however, as they led Azovmash in almost every category last week, except the most important one: scoring. Cedevita Zagreb lived to fight for a Last 16 berth at home by registering a commanding 73-84 road win that eliminated Hapoel Gilboa/Galil Elyon from Group D of the Eurocup on Tuesday in Gan-Ner, Israel. Cedevita improved to 3-2 and faces Azovmash at home in Zagreb next week for the final Last 16 berth from the group. Galil dropped to 1-4 and out of the Last 16 picture with its third straight home defeat. The good start was in favor of Galil, but a blitz by the visitors before the end of the first half put them on top by 6 points after 20 minutes. Galil never managed to take the lead back Marino Bazdaric led the winners with 17 points in a strong collective effort. Damjan Rudez added 16 for Cedevita, while Corsley Edwards finished with 15 and Dontaye Draper contributed 14. . Jack McClinton led the hosts with 15 points while Tyler Wilkerson added 12 with 8 rebounds. Galil had the better start, using a big push from the home fans up to a 16-9 lead after good minutes by Dagan Yivzori and McClinton. An unsportsmanlike foul on Green allowed Cedevita to grab a momentum and soon the score was even at 33-33. A big three pointer by Bazdaric, who scored 12 points already in the first quarter, put the visitors on top and together with Edwards set the half court lead on 37-43 in favor of the road team. Edwards with points at the rim and a jumper set the visitors' gap on 10, 39-49 but Yivzori stepped up with a long range shot and a reverse lay-up in the fast break to cut the margin back to only 7 after 25 minutes of basketball. Warren Carter hit a mid-range jumper before a rain of three pointers poured down from both ends with Green hitting from the corner for Galil yet Rudez and Bazdaric copied on the other side of court to make it 51-58 visitors. Last push by Galil brought the home side to just -4 at the end of the third quarter, 54-58 and still a big chance to capture the game in time. Carter with a big off balance fade away bucket inspired the fans but Rudez with another corner shot and a big weak side block kept his team safe above, 60-65 inside the last 6 minutes. They had much more possessions than us because we made turnovers and allowed offensive rebounds, and that hurt us a lot. We played with good energies and it covered for some of it, but not enough. We didn't shoot the ball well, even from the foul line, and in close games when you make so many shots it makes a difference."
