THE TAKE

Either EiffelTowers Den Bosch or Zadar will move to 2-1 in Group I as they face off in Holland. The Dutch champions EiffelTowers collected their first ULEB Cup victory with a home win against Hapoel Jerusalem. Shooting guard Travis Young rebounded from a poor first game with 29 points and small forward Darrell Tucker again had a strong showing off the bench with 17 points. Head coach Randy Wiel's team did an excellent job handling the ball, committing just six turnovers while forcing 13 Israeli turnovers. The Dutch side could grab their second win if they have a similar all-around strong showing. Zadar moved to 1-1 with a home victory over PGE Turow Zgorzelec. The key to the game was Head coach Aleksandar Petrovic's outside shooters, who hit 11 of 21 three-pointers. The Croatians also out-rebounded the Polish side 29-19. Center Todor Gecevski and point guard Corey Brewer combined for 43 points (on 6-of-9 from three-point range) and led the tough defense which held Turow to just 25% from long range. Petrovic has a decision to make whether to keep shooting guard Julius Johnson in the starting lineup or put Game One starter Shamell Stallworth back in the first five.

Dutch champion EiffelTowers Den Bosch won their second straight home game by beating Zadar 93-83 on Tuesday night. The win sees EiffelTowers join a three-way tie for first place in Group I at 2-1, along with PGE Turow Zgorzelec and Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem. It is also EiffelTowers' best star in the history of the competition. Last season the club won just two games all season. Next week EiffelTowers travel to Strasbourg. Zadar, which dropped to 1-2, next visits Jerusalem. The hosts built a small lead at the end of the first period and never let up, with the lead hitting 53-44 by halftime and peaking at 18 early in the fourth quarter. Corey Brewer and Juby Johnson tried to bring Zadar back and cut the lead to 8, but it proved to be too little, too late for the visitors. Jayson Wells led EiffelTowers with 21points, Brandon Kurtz added 19, Kees Akerboom 13, Travis Young 10 and Dean Oliver scored 9 and dished 7 assists. Brewer finished with a game-high 22 points and 6 assists, Todor Gecevski posted 15 points and 9 rebounds, Johnson added 13, Jure Lalic 12 and Shamell Stallworth 10.

Johnson scored the first points of the game for Zadar and Kurtz matched him at the other end for the hosts. The game picked up a nice pace in the early minutes with both sides trading baskets, but EiffelTowers were the first ones to jump ahead as Kurtz, Jos Frederiks and Oliver all hit threes in an 11-3 surge, which led to a 31-25 lead at the end of the first period. With Brewer serving as Zadar's only real offensive threat for a few minutes, the hosts used team basketball to take a 10-point lead. Gecevski and Lalic helped cut it to 6, but Darrell Tucker and later Akerboom made it 53-44 by halftime. The teams continued to trade points at a rapid pace in the third period, with Wells and Marcel Aarts getting more chances and putting EiffelTowers up 65-59. The lead reached 17 late in the period and 18 early in the fourth, but Zadar never gave in. Brewer and Johnson led the visitors back and made it a 10-point game with three minutes remaining. Then Andrej Stimac made it 85-77. However Wells and Akerboom were there with key points in the end to help the hosts to a big win.

Head Coaches

WIEL, RANDY
EiffelTowers Den Bosch
"Fortunately they missed some shots in the beginning, allowing us to play our game, otherwise we would have had a problem with the size of Zadar. If Jayson Wells and Brandon Kurtz played every game like today, then we would be the ULEB Cup champion. But there are only human."
PETROVIC, ALEKSANDAR
Zadar
"We did not have a strong start in defense and we soon found a problem to shut down Jayson Wells. We did not start the game with the right rhythm. If we want to score 100 points, we give EiffelTowers the chance to win the game. We would have had a chance with a slower game tempo."
