THE TAKE

A team about to clinch a Top 16 berth goes against another in a do-or-die situation, as Unicaja hosts Avellino in Malaga, Spain in Group A on Thursday at 21:00 CET. Unicaja (5-2) not only will qualify to the Top 16 with a win, but also send Cibona (5-2) and Maccabi Electra (4-3) to the next round. With Olympiacos (5-2) already qualified in Group A, Avellino (2-5) will run out of chances to qualify it it loses in Malaga. Unicaja has its full roster available apart from power forward German Gabriel, who is close to be back with the team but not expected to play this week. As such, natural-born mismatch Marcus Haislip is ready to lead his team's frontcourt along with centers Robert Archibald and Boni Ndong, up-and-coming big man Vitor Faverani and recently signed Paul Shirley. Haislip will be the man to stop for Avellino, but his versatility, size and athleticism is hard to mathc. Perhaps Nikola Radulovic can be the best option to stop him because of his experience and know-how. Former Unicaja power forward Marko Tusek will be ready to pull the trigger from downtown while centers Eric Williams and Andrea Crosariol will have a strong test against Archibald and Ndong. The point guard battle will be equally interesting, as Carlos Cabezas is back and ready to share the playmaker duties with Omar Cook in coach Aito Garcia Reneses' team. Cabezas will have a key matchup against Travis Best, while Cook, the Euroleague assists leader, will see playing time against Antonio Porta. Both teams are really deep at both wings. Unicaja brought back Berni Rodriguez, who is ready to make his 2008-09 Euroleague debut this week. Even with that, Unicaja will rely of rebounding and defensive ace Carlos Jimenez, swingman Jiri Welsch and small forward Thomas Kelati, who is in great shape recently. Jimenez has the tough mission to stop versatile forward Tamar Slay. Meanwhile, Kelati is ready for a big showdown against Chris Warren, who had 24 points against Unicaja in early November, while Welsch must be ready to go against a good shooter like Drake Diener. Daniele Cinciarini may well become the X-factor for Avellino due to his quickness and determination. Avellino must get Slay and Warren involved and try to slow down the game tempo. Meanwhile, Unicaja must play with the same intensity that led the team to win its last 4 Euroleague games. Unicaja is the heavy favourite, but Avellino is in a make-or-break situation, so anything can happen in Malaga on Thursday.

GAME QUOTES

Unicaja
  • Guard Omar Cook has dished at least 5 assists in each of his last four games and leads the Euroleague with 5.4 assists per game this season.
  • Center Boniface NDong has scored in double figures in six games so far this season. Last year, he reached double figures only six times in 19 appearances.
  • Guard Thomas Kelati has made at least 3 three-pointers in four consecutive games and leads the Euroleague this season with 21 three-pointers made.
Air Avellino
  • Forward Marko Tusek played in the 2007 Euroleague Basketball Final Four in Athens as a Unicaja player. Tusek joined Unicaja in January 2007 and spent half a season there.
  • Tusek and forward Tamar Slay both made a season-high 3 three-pointers last week against Maccabi Electra. Slay has also recorded at least 1 steal in every game this season.
  • Olympic bronze medal winner Antonio Porta of Argentina will be one of four medallists in the game Thursday. Unicaja boats silver medallists Berni Rodriguez and Carlos Jimenez of Spain and their coach, Aito Garcia Reneses. Spain and Argentina did not face each other at the Olympic Games in Beijing.

Quotes Head Coaches

GARCIA RENESES, AITO
Unicaja
"If we win this game we will definitely advance to the Top 16 and it can also be a good moment to see if them, even though we already recovered from losing in Avellino, are good enough to beat us also at home, where we have the support from our fans. Now we have to gradually re-introduce Berni and German to the team discipline after their injuries. German is still a bit short from totally recovering and Berni is playing more and more little by little, we don't want to force anything. We also can count on Paul Shirley for this Euroleague game."
MARKOVSKI, ZARE
Air Avellino
"We'll always have the same soul. The next three games will be even more important after our defeat against Maccabi Tel Aviv. Malaga is a good team, they have a lot of excellent players and for us it will be a difficult match. We'll try to show our skills, Avellino will play with its pride to win every game. We will try our best to surprise Malaga on their inexpugnable home court."

Players

CABEZAS, CARLOS
Unicaja
"A win would be one more step in the right direction for us and we also want to take revenge on the loss we suffered in Avellino. They are dangerous, especially at home, they come here with little options but they will want to improve their game. It will be an interesting game and we have to be ready and worry about our own game. The team is working fine right now, we had a bad streak of injuries but we are getting everyone back little by little."
CROSARIOL, ANDREA
Air Avellino
"This game will be totally different with respect to the one we played in Avellino, but it doesn't mean it will be easier for our opponents. Actually, we'll try to play with good concentration and great intensity. I'm sure Malaga iwill be playing to win the game. It will be a physical match. Anyway we should try to fight for all 40 minutes."
Carlos Cabezas - UnicajaUnicaja overcame the strong effort of a would-be survivor to finally outlast Air Avellino 72-68 in Malaga, Spain on Thursday and by so doing advance to the Top 16 from Group A. Unicaja not only raised itself into the next round with a 6-2 record, but did the same for Cibona (6-2) and Maccabi Electra (5-3), by dropping Avellino to 2-6 with just two regular season games remaining. The visitors certainly tried, though, shooting the lights out in the third quarter and taking their last lead with under 5 minutes left, when Unicaja ratcheted up its defense to decide the matter. Marcus Haislip led the winners with 17 points, including 4 in a row late that broke Avellino's back. Carlos Cabezas shined with 15 points, 3 assists and 3 rebounds in just 18 minutes for the winners. Robert Archibald added 13 points and Thomas Kelati 10, including 2 of just 3 triples all game for the hosts. Avellino made three times as many from downtown, with Chris Warren nailing a pair on his way to 16 points while Drake Diener hit 4 of 6 from deep for 15. Despite the huge spirit it showed, Avellino's first Euroleague season ended in elimination from the Top 16.

Warren took the baseline to score the game's first basket, and Tamar Slay banked in another falling down as Avellino went up 0-4. Unicaja went to the tandem of Omar Cook and Archibald for the latter's dunk, free throws and layup to move ahead 6-4 on the board. Eric Williams banged and hooked to tie 6-6 before Kelati put Unicaja up again with free throws. Warren ruled the baseline for a pair of backdoor layups sandwiched around a hook by Archibald. Haislip gave the hosts a 12-10 advantage in close, then after a lull, Carlos Jimenez added an easy layup to it. Jiri Welsch had the next open layup at 16-10 but Williams reversed to restart Avellino's offense. Boniface Ndong answered for Unicaja with a baseline turnaround, but Marko Tusek got a second-chance basket to match. Cabezas hit Unicaja's next layup before Tusek beat the buzzer with a triple to cut the hosts' lead to 20-17 after 10 minutes.

Drake Diener - Air AvellinoCabezas came out shooting in the second quarter with a jumper and a post-up runner as Unicaja's lead stretched to 24-19. His fastbreak assist to Joseph Gomis kept the run going, but only until Warren got free on the arc and buried a triple at 26-22. Although Paul Shirley rejected his next try at the rim, Warren went deep again, and soon had a three-point partner in Diener, whose triple had the game tied up again, 28-28. A pair of huge blocks by Ndong prevented Avellino from taking the lead, and Haislip took advantage by hitting 3 of 4 free throws to make it 31-28. Avellino's close misses, no doubt influenced by Ndong's presence, continued until Slay shot alone from downtown for another tie, 31-31. After both teams missed chances, Crosariol finally but Avellino up with a reverse, but Haislip bettered him dunking an alley-oop backwards and finishing a fastbreak on the buzzer put Unicaja back up, 35-33, at halftime.

Almost 2 quiet minutes to start the second half ended when Haislip slammed home a fastbreak dunk, although Williams did the same within seconds for Avellino. The defenses continued dominating until Diener boomed not just one triple, to tie at 38-38, but a minute later another to boost the visitors into the lead and ignite his teammates. Nikola Radulovic was soon copying him from the arc to make it 40-44, and even after Kelati matched from downtown - Unicaja's first three-pointer to go through all night - Warren followed with a dunk. Archibald got to the line for free throws as Unicaja stayed in its defensive zone but could not rebound and saw Warren drive for a reverse at 45-48. Moments later, it was Warren measuring from deep and connecting for a 45-51 Avellino advantage that silenced the Malaga crowd. Cabezas ended Unicaja's slide with a driving layup before he and Antonio Porta exchanged free throws for a 49-53 scoreboard after 30 minutes.

Robert Archibald - UnicajaUnicaja answered with veteran leaders Carlos Jimenez, who hit a layup, and Berni Rodriguez, who stole and hit free throws for a 53-53 tie right away int he final quarter. After a pair of foul shots by Williams, Jimenez also did the honor of taking back the lead for Unicaja, 56-55, with a smooth triple from the wing. Tusek's flying put-back got Avellino the lead again, but Gomis scored falling down to take it back for Unicaja. Archibald got back to the line by drawing the fourth foul on Williams and made both foul shots. Diener got fouled shooting a triple, however, hand made 3 of 3 for a new tie, 60-60, with less than 5 minutes left. Warren made a huge steal then, and his fastbreak layup was tipped in by Slay, putting Avellino up, but the next shot was Kelati's second triple, making it 63-62 Unicaja. After an Avellino timeout, Kelati cut and scored on a pass by Archibald, but Crosariol got Avelino within 65-64. Cabezas sent a running alley-oop pass to Haislip, who then got to the foul line, making both for a 69-64 edge with 1:25 to play. Unicaja risked a surprise press then, but ended up fouling, and Travis Best made both his tries at the line. A big offensive rebound by Cabezas led to Jimenez hitting 1 of 2 free throws, and after Avellino missed, Cook added 2 more at the line to settle the game and the question of Top 16 qualifiers from Group A.

Head Coaches

GARCIA RENESES, AITO
Unicaja
"I am happy with the game we had tonight, especially because we overcame a tough situation. We won another game, the one that qualifies us for the Top 16, and this is a very important fact. This was a game that we were forced to win and I have to highlight my players' attitude, that have been able to overcome our problems and be focused. Avellino is a good team and the psychological pressure we have favoured them in a way. We managed to react and that is a good sign."
MARKOVSKI, ZARE
Air Avellino
"If we would have won, it would have been a well-deserved win. We were close to upsetting Unicaja here, especially in the third quarter, but a hot by Thomas Kelati broke the game open in the final minutes. My team played a good game against a great team. Unicaja has a way deeper bench compared to ours."

Players

WELSCH, JIRI
Unicaja
"We were cold in the beginning of the game and Avellino is not a weak team. People expected us to beat Avellino by 20 and we knew it was not going to be like that. They played very aggressive and gave us trouble, especially in the opening minutes, when we were not focused on defense. We improved our defensive level in the second half and managed to add another win."
TUSEK, MARKO
Air Avellino
"I am very happy to come back to Malaga and the homecoming that the fans gave me tonight. That makes me think that I left good memories here in Malaga, even though I didn't play here for a long time. We are a small team and this is our first Euroleague season unlike Unicaja, which is more experienced. That was the biggest key tonight."
