THE TAKE

Either Azovmash Mariupol or Deutsche Bank Skyliners will face a very steep road to the next round with a loss in the battle of struggling teams in Group D's cellar. Coach Rimas Girskis's Azovmash dropped its third straight loss to fall to 1-3 after getting hammered at Pamesa Valencia. The Ukrainians trailed by 21 points at halftime and could not really come back to even make it respectable in the end. Azovmash could not stop the Spanish offense, which shot 58% from the field, including 50% (9-of-18) from long range. Mariupol shot well from the outside (8-of-15 - 54%) but could not get any inside game going - just 21-of-51 (41%) from inside the arc. Point guard Tyus Edney had 13 points and six assists but he shot just 6-of-15 while power forward Kris Lang came off the bench for a stellar game of 15 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Girskis must find a way to solidify his defense if he hopes to reverse the team's fortunes. One positive is that four of the remaining six games are at home, including this week against Skyliners. The German side is 0-4 after last week's heartbreaking loss at home against SLUC Nancy. Coach Murat Didin's team has lost its two home games by a total of three points, leaving Frankfurt fans to wonder what could be as a 2-2 record means sole possession of third place. Instead, Didin has to rebuild the psyche of his team after wasting another great showing by power forward Derrick Allen, who had 28 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Small forward Ilian Evtimov and shooting guard Dominik Bahiense de Mello each added 17 points for the Germans, who shot 60% from the field. Didin will still be without the injured starting trio point guard Pascal Roller, shooting guard Jimmy McKinney and small forward Koko Archibong. The coach and Frankfurt fans hope only that the return of those three does not come too late - namely when Skyliners is already eliminated. This road victory is nearly a must for the Germans.

Yahor Meshcharakou led four players in double figures with 17 points as Azovmash Mariupol improved to 2-3 in Group D with an 84-80 victory at home over Deutsche Bank Skyliners. The contest in Ukraine went back-and-forth all game and really wasn't decided until an unsportsmanlike foul on Skyliners big man Derrick Allen in the final minute resulted in three Meshcharakou foul shots to complete an 8-1 run late. Ilian Evtimov scored 28 points, including 6 three-pointers, and Allen added 23 points but it was not enough for Skyliners, which also received 10 points from Dominik Bahiense de Mello. Deutsche Bank, which also committed two turnovers in the final minute, dropped to 0-5 and next week faces a must-win game at home against Pamesa Valenica. Azovmash collected an important win at home and welcomes Anwil Wloclawek next week looking to even its record. Meshcharakou was not alone for Azovmash as Rodney Buford scored 16 points while Tyus Edney had 13 points as did Robert Archibald, who also chipped in 10 rebounds.

Meshcharakou opened the scoring for the host team, which pulled ahead 5-0. A Bufford three-ball helped push it to 10-2. Jimmie Hunt and Evtimov knocked down long balls to trim to 12-8. Meshcharakou answered with a long ball and Azovmash was up 19-8. Skyliners used long balls from both Bahiense de Mello and Evtimov to stay in the game and Evtimov's basket left Skyliners behind just 21-20 after one period. Alex King's opening basket and two Allen foul shots put the guests ahead 21-24. The game went back-and-forth throughout the second quarter with the lead changing hands seven times until Meshcharakou's three-point play made it 37-36. And Edney hit a basket right before the buzzer for a 40-38 score-line at the break. Archibald hit two free throws to start the second half before Ayinde Ubaka's long ball gave Frankfurt the lead again. Buford's basket made it 55-50 only to see Bahiense de Mello knock down another three-ball as the teams were even 59-59 after three periods. Hunt's three-pointer opened the fourth and his second bomb of the period gave Skyliners a 65-70 lead. But Edney answered with a three-pointer of his own and Kris Lang's three-point play completed an 8-0 run for a 73-70 Azovmash advantage. Allen evened things with his own three-point play but Tomas Delininkaitis's three-pointer made it a 76-73 lead. An unsportsmanlike foul on Allen resulted in Meshcharakou making 3-of-4 foul shots for an 81-74 lead in the closing minute. Evtimov drained another three-pointer and Panagiotis Liadelis made just 1-of-2 free throws but Skyliners' King committed a turnover which Azovmash turned into two Delininkaitis foul shots and an 84-77 advantage. And Evtimov's three-point play only provided the final score-line as Buford stole the ball from Maksym Shtein in the waning seconds.

Head Coaches

BRAZYS, ALGIRDAS
Azovmash Mariupol
"I'm very glad that we won, but this game didn't come easily. We started well and rather confident in the game at the beginning, but then the opponents changed the defense and we fell in offense. And of course, after two game lost the players feel quite depressed, but in any case they got together at the end and showed their muscle and won. It's the most important thing in my opinion. Also I'd wanted to underline the leader's features of Rodney Buford. There were many times this game he helped a lot."
DIDIN, MURAT
D. Bank Skyliners
"Now it's not an easy period for us, because we were playing now without our six injured players. But I want to say compliments for the other players, they led the game. It's a big responsibility and they try to do everything to win. Of course the bench is very important, as you saw Tomas Delininkaitis came and made the game go different. So I'd want to give my compliments and wish good luck to their team and coach."

"It's difficult to value you own playing. We do our work. I'm glad that the team got together at the end and that's why we won."
ALLEN, DERRICK
D. Bank Skyliners
"I think Azovmash is a very good team. We had today six players but the game was very winnable. But we need to continue to work in defense, and I think we still have a chance to win a game in the ULEB Cup. I think that at the end of this game we lacked concentration, defense."
