THE TAKE

BK Ventspils faces the difficult challenge of finally getting in the win column in its Week 3 meeting against Lauretana Biella in Italy. At 1-1, Biella knows that a win on Tuesday before its loyal supporters will keep it in the thick of the race for the elimination rounds from Group H. Ventspils will have to play a perfect game to overcome the glaring disparities with Biella the first two weeks of play have revealed. While Biella is averaging 81 points per game, Ventspils is not even breaking 60 points and has been beaten by an average of 22.5 points per game. The first area to correct must be ball-handling. The visitors have committed 20 turnovers a contest and if they give the ball away at that rate versus Biella, it will more than likely get pretty ugly for Ventspils before the final buzzer sounds. Ventspils does have, however, the key components to compete with Biella, even on the road, in a strong center and an excellent point guard. Big man Aaron Pettway is leading Ventspils and ranked among the top five in the competition in rebounding and blocked shots, while playmaker Janis Strelnieks is in the Eurocup top 10 in assists. Strelnieks, and his backcourt partner Dairis Bertans, will face off against Biella’s thee-guard starting set of Pietro Aradori, Massimo Chessa and Joe Smith. Aradori is having a great campaign so far, while Chessa and Smith combine for great scoring numbers. In the paint, Pettway will find a more than worthy opponent in Pervis Pasco, who is flanked by veteran Sven Schultze and Luca Garri. The Biella forwards will take on Ventspils’s third major weapon, wingman Mareks Jurevicus, in a key match-up. All of Ventspils hopes depend on Pettway and Strelnieks having big nights and getting more help from their role and bench players. Biella will look to the red-hot Aradori and a deep and experienced frontcourt to put it ahead after 40 minutes for a clutch win.

Quotes Head Coaches

BECHI, LUCA
Lauretana Biella
"We are going to play the third game of the Regular Season, the second one at home. So far we are 1-1 so it is not possible to predict what will happen in the future. One way or another, our goal will always be the same: take one game at the time, think about the upcoming game and try to prepare it as well as we can to be as much competitive as we can."
GALVANOVSKIS, AGRIS
BK Ventspils
"A road game has never been easy - and I think it is going to be a difficult one this time, too. We have some changes in the team: Mareks Jurevicus undergoes surgery tomorrow and we released Akeem Scott. We beat Valmiera in the Latvian League on Saturday and it seems that my players have gained more confidence, so I can say that we think positive and our motivation is high. We have talked a lot about the last game in the Czech Republic. I hope that we all drew the right conclusions. Biella is a very strong team. We expect a tough battle. We certainly won't give up and try to get back home with a win."

Players

CHESSA, MASSIMO
Lauretana Biella
"We are facing a tough game and must be focused from the beginning until the end. BK Ventspils is a good team, as they showed in the Euroleague qualifying round in October. As every game we play, we want to play hard for all 40 minutes because anything can happen if we stop doing that, as we saw in Bamberg. For this reason, we are working hard in practice because we want to use the entire potential that we have."
KALVE, ERNESTS
BK Ventspils
"The team is ready to fight but since we have already lost two games, we want to prove that we can play well and even win this time. So far I don't know which will be our coach's instructions, but I think we will have to pay attention to their key players."
Lauretana Biella managed to take its second home win of the season on Tuesday night, this time against visiting BK Venstpils by a commanding 80-54. The guests started with a 0-4 surprise but an early 11-0 run of the hosts put them ahead and they never looked back to reach margins that exceeded the 20 points until the final phases of the game. The win allows the Italian team to stay atop the standings in Group H with a triple-tie for 2-1 with CEZ Nymburk and Brose Baskets, while Ventspils drops to 0-3 and is the only winless team in the group after the first leg. Pervis Pasco and Joe Smith led the winners with 15 points apiece, the former with no miss, Sven Schultze added 14 and Pietro Aradori contributed 13. For Ventspils, Janis Strelnieks led the way with 14 points and Rolands akis added 12. A 3 of 23 from the arc hurt Ventspils too much while Biella's 11 of 26 helpd the hosts keepthe opponent always at a safe distance.

Ernests Kalve and Dairis Bertans made it a quick 0-4 edge for Ventspils, until Joe Smith opened the scoring for Biella. Three straight threes for the hosts by Sven Schultze and Smith himself earned them the first lead of the game, 11-8, forcing a timeout of the guests. Pietro Aradori joined in with a new three and a layup for five straight points making it 16-8, and then, after a few attacks with no score for both sides, Luca Garri stepped up for Biella again for a three-point play that made it an 11-0 burst, 19-8. Bertans finally broke the spell for Ventspils with a free throw, but Kieron Achara blasted another bomb from downtown that closed the first quarter with Biella in command, 22-9. Massimo Chessa opened the follow-up with a new triple for Biella, and only Aaron Pettway managed to reply that for Venstpils with a three-point play of his own, 25-12. But after that, a new barrage from the hosts came down again with a 10-0 spurt capped by Pervis Pasco with five straight points for the 23-point lead, 35-12. Janis Strelnieks stopped the bleeding for Ventspils but with only three assists at that point, it was clear that the gusts were not finding their tempo together with a poor 0 of 8 from the arc. On theotherhand, Biella, despite actually having more turnovers, were dominating the rebounds and having a 7 of 10 from downtown that made things a lot easier. Strelnieks finally scored from downtown for Ventspils but another three by Schultze closed the first half with a commanding 46-21 Biella edge.

The second half was no different story. Biella knew how to defend its lead and Venstpils would have to improve a lot to have some options. The guests still struggled from the arc, 2 of 14, whil Pasco was the man for Biella leading the scorers with no miss. The lead stayed around the 20 points for the whole third period despite Venstpils managing to cut off some points from the halftime difference but Strelnieks appeared in the last steps of the third period for a 0-4 personal run that made it 59-42 after 30 minutes. Rolands Zakis managed to extend that burst to 0-7 with his three-point play to open the last period, 59-45, but Smith and Schultze smashed all Venstpils dreams with three three-pointers that put things back in place, 68-49 in minute 35. That was all the resistance that Venstpils would offer as from that point until the final buzzer, Biella managed to cruise to the final win thanks to flawless free-throw shooting in the final minutes.

Head Coaches

BECHI, LUCA
Lauretana Biella
"We didn’t think it would be an easy game, because Ventspils is a good team with good prospects like Bertans and Janis Strelnieks, More and more, I think we were good to limit Pettway and his game, even with the good defense by Garri. But we perfectly know that in Ventspils it will be a completely different game."
GALVANOVSKIS, AGRIS
BK Ventspils
"They shot with great percentages from the three-point line. And we weren’t surprised by that. I think that the first half decided the game. Our team is a very young team and made some mistakes while a good team as Biella showed their quality and the quality of the Italian League. We had a lack of leadership because we just waived Scott and we are going to replace him for the next Eurocup game. And also our captain Jurevicus got injured this week and must have a knee surgery. So I think that we’ll play a better game next Tuesday."
