THE TAKE

Brose Baskets Bamberg begins a new era in Europe as it opens its Eurocup regular season Group F campaign at home against PGE Turow. The 2005 and 2007 German league champion saw successful head coach Dirk Bauermann and be replaced by Chris Fleming, who rode the Artland Dragons fairytale all the way to the ULEB Cup Final 16 last season. Fleming's new team has struggled with injuries to start the season and is in the lower half of the standings so far. Doing all he can for Bamberg is guard Filiberto Rivera, who is back with Fleming after the duo finished German runner-up in 2007. Rivera has averaged 13 points, 4.5 assists and more than 1 steal. Helping out is former NBA center Alexander Johnson with nearly 12 points and more than 6 rebounds a game. Forward Jared Newson has also scored in double figures and forward Predrag Suput is just below the 10-point mark. Guard Michael Jordan was brought in to help with playmaking duties but he has been off-and-on thus far. Guards Demond Greene and Robert Garrett both provide an offensive spark if needed and forward Eric Taylor is still looking to find his rhythm in the paint. If Jordan can help Rivera at point guard and Fleming can find a third main scorer, Bamberg should be able to open Group F with a victory. Turow head coach Saso Filipovski meanwhile had to totally revamp his team after leading the Polish side to the ULEB Cup quarterfinals last season. Turow is right near the top of the DBE standings this season with forward Damir Miljkovic leading the way, averaging nearly 15 points, more than 2 assists and 2 steals while hitting better than 45% from long range. Miljkovic also provides Filipovski some valuable big-game experience, playing in the 2006 FIBA EuroCup Final Four with Dynamo St. Petersburg and the FIBA EuroCup quarterfinals in 2007 with Panionios. Guard Donald Copeland has also been excellent with 13 points and nearly 3 assists and forward Chris Daniels is also in double figures with 6 rebounds. Center John Turek is a strong defender in the paint while rookie center Darian Townes is averaging better than 2 blocked shots per game. Guard Bryan Bailey helps run the offense while forward Robert Witka is invaluable as the only mainstay in Filipovski first 10 rotation. And rookie forward Alex Harris can hit some three pointers as can forward Gorjan Radonjic. Filipovski proved last season he can win with little known talent and he will try to do the same this season.

Quotes Head Coaches

FLEMING, CHRIS
Brose Baskets
"Turow is a team that was very succesful in the ULEB Cup last season. They have very good players and they are extremly dangerous from the perimeter. Also they have very good depth. For us it is a good challenge. We are happy to start the Eurocup with a home game. We are confident and excited."

GARRETT, ROBERT
Brose Baskets
"It's an important game for us. We want to have a good start in the competition. If you want to reach the next stage you have to win your home games."
Donald Copeland poured in 25 points and dished out 7 assists as PGE Turow thrashed Brose Baskets Bamberg 39-69 for a record-setting road win in their Group F opener. Turow improved on its own defensive record for fewest points allowed in the history of the competition, eclipsing the 42 points Strasbourg scored against the club exactly one year ago this week. Turow smashed the previous mark for best defensive performance on the road, which previously was 48, set by Makedonikos in December 2004. Turow dealt handily with three starters having two fouls in the first quarter as Darian Townes came off the bench to score 10 points, grab 7 rebounds and block 5 shots for Turow. No other player scored in double figures for the visitors, who made 9-of-21 three-pointers and out-rebounded Bamberg 32-20. Bamberg scored just 5 points in the second quarter and 7 in the third as little went right for the home team. Eric Taylor was the only Bamberg player to score in double figures with 10 points. Alexander Johnson added 8 points and 4 steals.

Johnson opened the scoring for the hosts with a three-point play but Chris Daniels hit two baskets and Damir Miljkovic made it 3-8. Turow was really playing tough defense and did not let Bamberg score again until Taylor’s foul shot with three minutes left in the first quarter to make it 4-8. Tim Ohlbrecht and Jared Newson each hit to knot the game at 8-8. And Taylor connected again from inside and twice from the foul line to make it 12-10 for the hosts. But Copeland’s two free throws evened the game at 12-12 after one period. Townes made two inside baskets and Copeland nailed two triples and was followed by a Robert Witka three-pointer for a 0-13 start to the quarter. Taylor finally scored for Bamberg with a foul shot but Miljkovic hit a jumper and then Witka and Gorjan Radonjic each knocked down triples as the lead grew to 15-33. Johnson’s dunk stopped the run but Copeland hit the final four points of the period as Turow led 17-37 at half-time, having given up just five points in the second quarter.

Krzysztof Roszyk started the second half with a three-pointer and Bamberg started to find a bit of a rhythm with Filiberto Rivera hitting a layup and four fouls shots trimming the deficit to 23-40 with three minutes left in the third. But Townes, who had been playing great defense the whole game, hit two more layups and Copeland connected again from downtown and the lead after Miljkovic’s jumper was 24-49 going into the fourth. Taylor tried to bring his team back with two straight baskets but Copeland also scored four points and then Radonjic nailed a three-pointer and the lead was back to 28-56. Michael Jordan was called for an unsportsmanlike foul and Copeland made both free throws and then a layup as the lead grew to 30 points – 30-60 with five minutes left. Rivera and Robert Garrett hit baskets but the combination of Copeland and Townes was much too much.
