THE TAKE

A classic Euroleague showdown gets Group A rolling for Olympiacos and Tau Ceramica, who meet on Thursday at 20:30 CET in Athens, Greece. These faced each other in last year's Quarterfinal Playoffs, with Tau beating the Reds 2-1 to advance to the Final Four. What's more, these teams played opening week last season, too, as Olympiacos downed Tau by 19 points. Olympiacos will play this time without two key team members, center Sofoklis Schortsianitis and forward Panos Vasilopoulos. The Reds, however, have as many as 11 new faces, including Marc Jackson, Jake Tsakalidis, Milos Teodosic and Lynn Greer. Meanwhile, Tau Ceramica travels to Athens without one of their key off-season signees, James Singleton, who is injured long-term, while Simas Jasaitis missed last weekend's Spanish League game and is hospitalized with an infection that could keep him out of action a couple weeks. The point guard battle will be one of the keys to this game. Greer, the competition's top scorer in 2004, makes his Euroleague return. He will face Pablo Prigioni, a two-time All-Euroleague second team selection as one of the best defensive and passing guards around. Prigioni joins forces with creative playmaker Zoran Planinic, who offers leadership and one-on-one skills. Meanwhile, Greer gets help from Teodosic, an up-and-coming guard ready to make his Euroleague debut, as well as from Roderick Blakney. Olympiacos shooting star Arvydas Macijauskas faces his former team and is ready to bounce back from an injury-plagued season. Macijauskas teams up with Qyntel Woods, who was impressed everyone throughout pre-season at small forward. They'll test their offensive skills against Igor Rakocevic, who won the Alphonso Ford Top Scorer trophy last season, and all-around scoring threat Pete Mickeal, who will see extended playing time if Jasaitis stays sidelined. Giorgios Printezis of Olympiacos and veteran Sergi Vidal of Tau will play critical roles off the bench. Ever better big man Giannis Bouroussis will be joined for the first time by Jackson and Tsakalidis in the Reds' frontcourt. Tau has its new frontcourt reference in Tiago Splitter, but he's also limited in the sure help he's getting to three-point threat Mirza Teletovic. Another big man, Will McDonald, was in the United States on urgent family matters but is expected to land in Athens for the game, while forward Linton Johnson's debut is not expected to play due to a muscle injury. Even so, expect nothing but a big game, full of intensity and challenges as the Euroleague season starts for two perennial contenders.

Quotes Head Coaches

GERSHON, PINI
Olympiacos
"I can't say that we are 100-percent ready at this moment. Tau has some injuries, exactly like last year, when we beat them by 19 points on the Euroleague opening night. But they are a big club with consecutive appearances in the Euroleague Final Four, so undoubtedly the game will not be easy for us. I hope that my players understand how important it is to win home games, especially against big teams. If we are 60 to 70 percent ready for our first Euroleague battle, I cannot promise a win, but we will be ready to fight and be very competitive."
SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Tau Ceramica
"It's really been a very difficult situation for us, because all these problems have came up only three days before the Euroleague tipoff. Anyway, we didn't choose this and we cannot do anything to change it. The only thing we can do now is to work hard and prepare the game as well as we can."

"The game against Tau is very important for us. Last year, we started the Euroleague with a big win over the same team and I remember that I was sitting at the bench, but my heart was on the floor. It is important that we start the new season at home and definitely we need to win this one to take confidence for the next games. Without Luis Scola, Tau is a different team than last year, but still they have a good team with very dangerous perimeter players. As for Olympiacos, everybody is excited to start the Euroleague. Day by day we get together as a team and we improve more and more."
PLANINIC, ZORAN
Tau Ceramica
"Last year we played four times against Olympiacos and we knew how they play, we knew their systems pretty well, but this season they have a lot of different players. We will have to play great defense and be prepared against them. They will play probably in a full gym and they will play strong for sure. They have started the competition a bit later than we did, as we played four domestic games and they only played one. But they will play at their home court and it's the first Euroleague game, so I think that especially the new players will want to show what they can do in the tournament and also that they are one of the favourites, in the same way we want to do. I think it's going to be a great game. After watching some preparation games and the Greek League opener against PAOK, I think that maybe the players that are in better condition and can put us in more trouble are guys like Qyntel Woods, Arvydas Macijauskas or Giannis Bouroussis."
Arvydas Macijauskas - Olympiacos A back-and-forth battle between classic Euroleague rivals saw host Olympiacos prevail 95-90 over perennial Final Four contender Tau Ceramica in Group A on Thursday in Piraeus, Greece. Olympiacos was in full control, leading by 18 points at the half, but a third-quarter blitz by Tau made it an even game the rest of the way, until the Reds needed to rally with a late scoring spurt to hold onto the victory. In a team full of newcomers, it was holdover Arvydas Macijauskas who finished off Tau with late points at the line. Macijauskas led all scoers with 21 points to go with 7 steals and 3 assists. New center Marc Jackson matched those 21 points, while Lynn Greer drilled 20, including a key three-pointer near the end, and Qyntel Woods 19. Giannis Bouroussis added a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds for the winners. Tau got an even bigger double blast out of Mirza Teletovic, who scored 19 points and pulled 17 rebounds, 9 of them on offense. Zoran Planinic also scored 19 for Tau, while Tiago Splitter had 11 points and Igor Rakocevic 10. Tau erased all of a 20-point deficit early in the second half to lead by 3 points, 71-74, early in the final quarter, but ran out of solutions at the end.

Good passing resulted in a triple by Pablo Prigioni to get Tau started at 0-3. Olympiacos decided to play the zone defense right from the beginning, but the guests did not find any trouble to score in their second possession, too, with Tiago Splitter putting it in this time. The Reds reacted with Macijauskas connecting for 4 straight points and Marc Jackson giving Olympiacos its first lead at 6-5. A quick exchange of three-point shots - with Rakosevic and Teletovic matching Macijauskas and Qyntel Woods of Olympiacos - left an 11-11 tie. Against the Reds’ zone defense, Tau players found room for drives to the basket, but waiting there to block shots were Olympiacos big men Bouroussis, Tsakalidis and Woods. Both teams found points at the free-throw line, before big men Bouroussis and Jackson both fired in from behind the arc to give the hosts a 24-18 lead. Zoran Planinic rose for a good jumper to answer back for Tau, but with free throws by Jackson, the first quarter ended 26-20 in favor of Olympiacos.

Zoran Planinic - Tau CeramicaA basket-plus-free throw by Bouroussis gave Olympiacos the biggest lead so far, 31-22, to start the second quarter. Planinic continued to be the go-to guy for Tau as he nested another nice jumper. Woods stepped up now for Olympiacos, first putting back an offensive rebound and then burying a triple to make it 38-25. Tau now had difficulties creating opportunities against the Olympiacos zone. The hosts took advantage with good passing as Jackson dished an assist to Greer and then posted up for a hook shot and a 44-27 Olympiacos advantage. Tau needed something and got it as Mirza Teletovic tipped in the ball, Splitter connected in the paint and a triple by Rakosevic cut the difference to 46-34. Jackson answered with a jumper, giving him 15 points already, the same as Greer, who exchanged triples with Prigioni at 51-37. Another assist by Jackson, this time to Milos Teodosic, and free throws by Macijauskas boosted Olympiacos ahead by 55-37, giving the Reds their highest margin yet heading to the lockers for halftime.

Jackson opened fire in the third period with a triple to make it 58-37. Tau committed two errors, but soon Teletovic and Planinic combined for 5 points that seemed little at the time, making it 58-42. Woods connected for the Reds, but Teletovic was now hot with a three-pointer that proved to be the beginning of Tau comeback. After McDonald finished a nice lay-up-plus free throw for the visitors, Planinic created room for a driving backet and and McDonald scored on an offensive board. The visitors had trimmed the difference to 60-52 within 3 minutes and Olympiacos head coach Pini Gershon had to call timeout. Jackson stepped up again to stop Tau's 15-2 scoring run with a basket-plus-free throw. But the guests' confidence was now too high to stop. Planinic chipped in a triple from downtown and 4 straight Tau points from the line made it 63-59. Planinic then buried his fourth three-pointer to bring Tau within 63-62. Giorgos Printezis scored to let Olympiacos breathe, but Rakosevic tied the game at 65-65 to complete the visitors' comeback. Just the same, a stylish drive by Woods and a signature triple by Macijauskas allowed Olympiacos to lead again by a solid 70-65 after 30 minutes.

Qyntel Woods - OlympiacosPlaninic stole the ball twice from Teodosic to score and dish an assist as Tau turned a 0-6 streak into a 70-71 advantage - its first since the opneing quarter - to start the final one. Pete Mickeal hit a corner triple to boost Tau's lead to 71-74, but immediately Woods answered back with an off-balance jumper at 73-74. Macijauskas and Woods were now bearing offensive responsibility for Olympiacos, but Mickeal and Splitter were there for Tau, too, as the scoreboard stood at 77-78 in a point-by-point game. Macijauskas's catch-and-shot jumper made it 81-78 for the hosts, but Mickeal remained connected. Woods dunked impressively and dished the assist for a fastbreak dunk by Bouroussis and an 85-80 Olympiacos' lead. Then Greer fired up a key triple to make it 88-80 with 3:30 left to play. Teletovic tipped in a shot and Sergi Vidal buried a three-pointer to keep Tau alive at 88-85 with under 2 minutes left. Teletovic soon shot for a tie from the corner, but missed, allowing Greer to end a scoring drought with free throws for Olympiacos to stay ahead 90-85 with 32 seconds to go. McDonald got 2 of those back at the line, making it 90-87, but Tau was now obliged to foul to stop the clock. Macijauskas didn't miss his free throws, but Teletovic found another three-pointer to make it 92-90 in the waning seconds. Tau was called for flagrant foul then, however, and 3 points from Macijauskas sealed the final 95-90 victory for Olympiacos.

Head Coaches

GERSHON, PINI
Olympiacos
"It was a good game. Tau is an excellent team. Both teams faced trouble with injuries. It is important to start the competition with a win and it is more important to win all the games at home. Every game will be hard to win. It's not easy to play well at this time of the season. Some of our players played big minutes tonight, despite the fact that they have not been together with us for a long time. That's not easy. We played well on defense and I can't ask much more on offense. When the defenses start to become tougher, we have to improve, too. As far as the zone defense we used, we had some difficulties, but that's the reason we work; to improve them."
SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Tau Ceramica
"Congratulations to Olympiacos for its win tonight. We played awful during the first half. We have no problems, considering our offense; we always play well on the offensive end. The problem is our defense. Especially, tonight, we had difficulties on defense in the first two quarters. We improved in the second half, but committed mistakes down the stretch and missed an opportunity to start the Euroleague season with a win."

Players

MACIJAUSKAS, ARVYDAS
Olympiacos
"We won and that's good. We came up with a big difference, but we didn't manage to control it. Tau is a really great team, a team with three or four straight Final Four appearances, and there is no wonder that they came back in the game. However, our job is to maintain the difference every time we create one. We have to be careful and handle situations like this better. I think we played better than we did against PAOK in our opening in game in the Greek League. I don't feel any difference playing against my former team, Tau, as now I am a player of Olympiacos and I give my best for my team."
MICKEAL, PETE
Tau Ceramica
"It wasn't a good start for us in the Euroleague. We had a bad first half; we didn't shoot well, our defense had a lot of trouble and we have to go back and work hard on it. It's a long season and we have to bounce back. I was looking forward to come back to Greece and to play again against Olympiacos."
