THE TAKE

The very last game of the 2009-10 Euroleague regular season will tip off in Barcelona, where Regal FCB welcomes Montepaschi Siena in a Group A showdown. The Spanish champs are on the verge of becoming the first team since CSKA Moscow in 2005 to finish the regular season undefeated, but the Italian champs will not go down without a fight. In fact, despite Barca’s dominant season thus far, Montepaschi is 8-1 and can overtake it for first place and a No. 1 seed in the Top 16 Draw. To do so though, head coach Simone Pianigiani’s men must beat Barca by 20 or more, since that is the margin Barca won by in Week 5 in Italy. That seems unlikely when considering that Barcelona has allowed an average of just 57.8 points in home games and won them by an average margin of 26 points. And Barca leads the league in free throw shooting (80.1%) and two-point shooting (60.9%) and has committed the third fewest turnovers (11.4 TOpg.). Ironically, Montepaschi stars in the same areas. It leads the league in three-point accuracy (46.4%), is second in free throw shooting (79.7%) and has committed the fewest turnovers in the league (11 TOpg.). The hosts have a disadvantage going in as Jaka Lakovic remains sidelined with a sprained ankle and reigning Euroleague MVP Juan Carlos Navarro (ankle) and former All-Euroleague big man Terence Morris (flu) are both questionable. Even without them, Barca boasts incredible depth and the game promises great head-to-head matchups at every position starting at point guard, where two-time All-Euroleague pick Terrell McIntyre leads the visitors against rising star Ricky Rubio. Former Euroleague champ Nikos Zisis comes off the Siena bench to meet Victor Sada. The savvy Roger Grimau and veteran bomber Gianluca Basile could see extra minutes in place of Navarro and they will be paired against the explosive David Hawkins and shooting star Henry Domercant. At small forward, Pete Mickeal will look to continue his excellent season against Romain Sato. In the paint, Barcelona will send the trio of Boni NDong, Fran Vazquez and Erazem Lorbek against Montepaschi captain Shaun Stoneroo, Ben Eze and Ksistof Lavrinovic. Both teams are certain Final Four contenders loaded with the cream of European basketball. Although Barcelona remains the favorite at home, it is not inconceivable that injuries could present a weakness for Montepaschi to exploit. Either way, this game is of championship quality early in the season.

GAME NOTES

Regal FC Barcelona

Fran Vazquez is on the verge of becoming the Euroleague’s career blocked shots leader. Vazquez has 125 career blocks – 1 fewer than the leader Denis Marconato, a former teammate who will face him this week with Montepaschi Siena.

Erazem Lorbek recorded his only double-double of the season last year in the Top 16 against Montepaschi Siena. Lorbek had 14 points and 12 rebounds to lead his team at the time, CSKA Moscow, to a 95-71 victory.

Barcelona big men Terrence Morris and Lorbek were teammates with Montepaschi guard Nikos Zisis last season at CSKA Moscow. Together they won the Russian League and reached the Euroleague final.

Pete Mickeal and Montepaschi big man Ksistof Lavrinovic were teammates briefly during the 2004-05 season at Dynamo Moscow. Mickael played only one Eurocup game with Moscow before moving to Makedonikos Kozani.

Last week Juan Carlos Navarro surpassed Tyus Edney for 10th place on the Euroleague career assists charts. Navarro currently has 385 assists – 1 more than Edney – in 164 career games. He needs just 3 more assists to overtake injured Panathinaikos guard Dimitris Diamantidis for ninth place.

Navarro has scored in double figures in each of his last seven games.

Jaka Lakovic is 17 assists away from becoming the fifth player to reach 500 assists for his Euroleague career.

Terrence Morris is just 1 blocked shot away from cracking the top 10 on the Euroleague’s career shot-blocking charts. He enters Week 10 tied for 11th place with 79 career blocks. Marcus Haislip sits in 10th place. Tied with Morris are three active players, Real Madrid’s Jorge Garbajosa and Darjus Lavrinovic and Montepaschi’s Ben Eze. Erazem Lorbek is 16th all-time with 77 career blocks.

Ricky Rubio has a streak of 17 consecutive free throws made in Euroleague games.

Rubio is the only Barcelona player to stars all eight games this season.

Barcelona boasts the best defense in the Euroleague this season, having allowed an average of just 61.7 points per game.

Montepaschi Siena

Guard David Hawkins had one of the best games of his Euroleague career against Barcelona in January 2008. He only missed a single shot en route to 22 points, 3 assists and 3 steals for a career-high 28 index in a 75-77 victory.

Henry Domercant had one of the best games of his Euroleague career in a 66-63 win over Barcelona in November 2005. Domercant, then with Efes Pilsen, recorded 23 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals for a 31 index in a 66-63 win in Istanbul.

Romain Sato reinforced Barcelona for the 2006 Spanish League playoffs. He was a teammate of four current Barcelona players: Juan Carlos Navarro, Jordi Trias, Gianluca Basile and Roger Grimau.

Sato recorded his career best in steals, 6, in a 71-61 home victory over Barcelona in November 71-61.

Denis Marconato spent three seasons playing for Barcelona between 2005 and 2008. He helped the club reach the 2006 Final Four and win the 2007 Spanish King's Cup. He was a teammate of seven current Barcelona players and played under head coach Xavi Pascual.

Terrell McIntyre has drilled at least one three-pointer in 25 consecutive Euroleague games.

Henry Domercant has made 43 consecutive free throws dating back to last season.

Ben Eze needs just 1 more block to crack the top 10 on the Euroleague’s career shot-blocking charts. He is now tied with Real Madrid’s Jorge Garbajosa and Darjus Lavrinovic and Barcelona’s Terrence Morris for 11th place with 79 career blocks. Marcus Haislip sits in 10th place.

Quotes Head Coaches

PASCUAL, XAVIER
Regal FC Barcelona
"The game is important because we are playing for the first place in our group, and we want to prove we deserve it. We know that the point differential is in our favor for now, but we want to approach this game as if it already was a Top 16 one: we are facing a great team regarding their roster and their style of play. We also want to be able to beat Montepaschi in front of our fans, so that they enjoy a little more of this good moment we are experiencing."
PIANIGIANI, SIMONE
Montepaschi Siena
"In this game the best two teams of the group will face each other and so it should be a great game, also because this game is not that important as regarding the standings. But I think that in games like this, there is the desire of players to compete and prove each other, also because of the difficulties that both will find in Top 16."

Players

BASILE, GIANLUCA
Regal FC Barcelona
"We are completely aware of the quality of a team like Montepaschi Siena. They are a peculiar team because, probably except Ben Eze, all the players in there are great shooters. They are also shooting at a 46% rate from beyond the arc and we will have to watch for that. In the last Spanish League game I had a good performance, so I can only hope that my good moment stays on for this important game."
SATO, ROMAIN
Montepaschi Siena
"For sure it is going to be a tough game for us, we play against a very strong team that in the first game won in Siena. We want to try to win this game, It’s tough, but everything can happen. We want to play a good game, we will not think about the score, 19 or 20 points gap, but just to play a great game and try to win. This is the most important thing."
Ricky Rubio - Regal FC BarcelonaOn Thursday night, the big Group A showdown for first place only showed that Regal FC Barcelona deserved the top spot as the Spanish team defeated Montepaschi Siena by 85-70. The win allows Barca to finish the regular season undefeated, 10-0, a feat that had only been conquered before by CSKA Moscow in the 2004-05 season. On the other hand, Siena dropped to 8-2, having lost only to Barcelona twice. As such, with both teams already qualified before this game for the Top 16, Barca finishes first and Siena second. Barcelona started rolling with an 11-2 and never looked back, even though Siena managed to pull within 42-40, but the hosts stayed calm and reacted again for good. Six Barcelona players scoredin double digits. Ricky Rubio led them all with a double-double of 14 points and 10 assists, the latter his all-time high in the Euroleague. Three more players chipped in with 13 points each, Juan Carlos Navarro, Boni N'Dong and Fran Vazquez. Vazquez also had three blocks that made him the best blocker of all time in the Euroleague for a total 128, surpassing Denis Marconato, who didn't have any for Siena tonight, with 125. Finally, Pete Mickeal and Terence Morris had 10 points apiece for the winners. For Siena, David Hawkins led all scorers with 19 points, Terrell McIntyre added 16 and Ksistof Lavrinovic posted 10.

The game started with pyrotechnics as Ricky Rubio had a no-look backpass to Terence Morris for the slam, 2-0 for Barcelona. Later, Rubio blasted a three and then stole yet another ball to draw a foul from Shaun Stonerook and force Siena's first timeout, 7-0. The hosts' defense also started strong and on the other end Rubio fed Boni N'Dong for the alley-oop and a 9-0. It was Ben Eze, with a move in the low post, that started Montepaschi's scoring almost after three minutes into the game. Siena was struggling in offense as Barca covered all bases, but David Hawkins finally stepped up for free throws and a bucket that made it 11-6. As the guests seemed to find their pace on court, Barca decreased its tempo but Juan Carlos Navarro hit the layup to maintain a 15-8 cushion. The free throws were keeping Siena in the game when Pete Mickeal solved it fast with a slam and Morris joined in for a three that made it an 11-point game, 20-9. A turnaround jumper by Romain Sato broke a 7-0 for the hosts and Terrell McIntyre also gave some signs of life with baskets that put the lead below the 10 points again after a 0-6, 22-15, to close the first period.

Gianluca Basile opened the scoring race of the second quarter with a long jumper, but McIntyre went for his 7th straight point with a three for Siena. Both teams were trying to run now, but Ksistof Lavrinovic missed a clear mismatch with Victor Sada in offense while Fran Vazquez hit free throws for 28-18. With Erazem Lorbek and Lavrinovic scoring in the paint, the big men stepped up and Hawkins and Vazquez traded more baskets as Siena was determined not to let Barca pull away, 32-26. With Rubio and Navarro back on court, the hosts took control of the game again as the former fed Mickeal twice for easy baskets in the paint, 36-28. Barcelona's defense was like clockwork now, and Siena was having problems finding space for shooting. Sato's free throws gave Siena some air, but Ricky stole the ball to cruise for a new layup. McIntyre replied with his bomb from downtown, but Vazquez's turnaround jumper brought the crowd to their feet in the last minute. It was Eze however, who had the last say in the first half with a basket that made it 40-35 at the break.

David Hawkins - Montepaschi SienaEze also opened the second half with a free throw for Montepaschi, Mickeal scored for the hosts but Siena was back to turn the game around. McIntyre made it 42-40, but when Rubio forced Stonerook's fourth foul, things looked a little better for Barca, 48-40 after free throws by Rubio himself and Navarro. The latter blasted a three to reply to Lavrinovic's missed bomb and to put the lead back in double digits. Montepaschi was struggling in offense again despite dominating the offensive boards at this point of the game, and only Henry Domercant free throws broke the 9-0 Barca run. Finally, the guests found the net with Domercant's three but Lorbek slammed soon to show authority of the hosts, and soon N'Dong had his own basket to put Barca at 10 points again, 58-48, but there was not time for much more as the game arrived at the end of the third quarter with Barcelona dominating, 60-49.

After two minutes with no points, Hawkins opened the scoring with two straight threes for Siena that made it 60-55, forcing Barca's timeout. Morris blasted a three for the hosts and Rubio finally fed N'Dong for a basket plus foul, but the big man missed the free throw making it 65-55. But the scoring run of the hosts didn't stop there and went up to 9-0 with N'Dong's new basket, 69-55. McIntyre and Morris traded baskets but coach Simone Pianigiani didn't like it and called for a new timeout. Lavrinovic finally found the rim with one of his shots, but N'Dong was the man of the quarter for Barcelona in offense with a new basket. Entering the last three minutes, Rubio hit two more free throws, but Eze replied with a dunk. But as the clock ticked away, Mickeal hit free throws to put the hosts in a safe place to secure the win and the first place in Group A wihtout any losses.

PIANIGIANI, SIMONE
Montepaschi Siena
"Our objective was to qualify, and we did that, so a game like tonight's was a great practice for the Top 16. There are very good teams that haven't advanced, and in the Top 16, anything can happen. Barcelona has finished first deservedly, without losing a game. They play a beautiful basketball, with many stars who like to pass the ball and play intense and strong on defense. We tried to play with pride and hang in there physically, but that wasn't sufficient here. Fortunately, we won't play Barcelona in the Top 16."

Players

LORBEK, ERAZEM
Regal FC Barcelona
"To finish the regular season with nothing but victories is something to be proud of. This game was not easy at all. I think we won it with our very good defense. We played well, above all Ricky Rubio."
NAVARRO, JUAN CARLOS
Regal FC Barcelona
"The result is good. But the good things start now in the season with the Top 16. We are in a good moment, we are working well and we hope to continue that way. It was a game against a great European team, they never gave up. We were almost group champs before the game, but we started concentrated and focused and it paid off. Our game is good and the crowds come to the Palau, and that helps us make it even better."
