Caja Laboral Vitoria opens up its Top 16 campaign at home on Thursday by hosting defending champion Olympiacos Piraeus. Both teams enter the Top 16 on winning runs and with new players signed to bolster their respective rosters. Vitoria, which won three straight to finish the regular season, added playmaker Omar Cook from EA7 Emporio Armani to help run the show. The Reds, who boast a league-best seven-game winning streak, bolstered the frontline with center Giorgi Shermadini, who arrives from Top 16 foe Maccabi Electra. Olympiacos swept a pair of regular season meetings against Vitoria, including a 72-89 victory at Fernando Buesa Arena in November led by 18 points off the bench by Kyle Hines. Olympiacos was the superior regular season team to Vitoria in part thanks to better shooting, rebounding and assists, however the addition of Cook could help spark the Caja Laboral attack, which boasts several players with great offensive touch, including Brad Oleson and Fabien Causeur in the backcourt, Maciej Lampe inside and Nemanja Bjelica all over. Thomas Heurtel has also displayed a fine ability to score, while tough swingmen Fernando San Emeterio and Andres Nocioni are difference makers at both ends.
