THE TAKE

Lietuvos Rytas (3-1) can secure a bid for the Eurocup Final Eight with a victory at home against Spirou Basket (2-2) in the Last 16 Group L. L. Rytas, The 2005 ULEB Cup winner, collected its third straight win, 70-79 at Artland Dragons, to improve to 3-1 in the group. The victory was all the more important for head coach Rimas Kurtinaitis's Lithuanian team in that it was its first win on the road in the Eurocup. L. Rytas can now close the deal at home, where it has not lost any of its five games yet in the competition. Against Artland, L. Rytas turned the ball over 20 times and hit just 8 of 27 (30%) three-pointers. But Kurtinaitis's men forced 23 Artland turnovers while holding Dragons to just 40% from two-point range. Forward Chuck Eidson had yet another outstanding game with 17 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists while center Marijonas Petravicius scored a game-high 18 points with 6 rebounds. The other three starters combined for just 14 points. But Kurtinaitis was saved by guard Steponas Babrauskas and forward Arturas Jomantas both collecting 14 points off the bench. L. Rytas will probably not be able to get away with those struggles within its starting five against Spirou. In Week 1 of the Last 16 at Spirou, little worked for L. Rytas, which shot 44% from two-point range, 34% on three-pointers and made 22 of 32 (69%) free throws. Kurtinaitis hopes his team's positive trend at home will continue. Spirou Basket meanwhile would like to snap a two-game losing streak as the Belgian champ dropped its second straight against iurbentia Bilbao, 82-78 in overtime on the road, to fall to 2-2 in the group. Head coach Drazen Anzulovic's Spirou came back to force overtime on 2 free throws on the final play of regulation by guard Justin Hamilton before scoring just 4 points in overtime. Spirou forced 21 turnovers in the game, but also turned it over 19 times. Anzulovic's men also shot themselves in the foot by hitting just 9 of 16 (56%) free throws. Hamilton's 17 points led the way while three other players hit in double figures including guard Dwayne Broyles's 15 points and 6 steals. Guard Jonathan Tabu dished out 5 assists off the bench, but turned the ball over late in regulation and committed an unsportsmanlike foul in overtime. Spirou cannot afford such a lack of discipline and concentrate with its Final Eight hopes on the line.

Quotes Head Coaches

KURTINAITIS, RIMAS
Lietuvos Rytas
"The opposing team is solid only because they have qualified to this round of the competition. Besides, they only lost to Bilbao by four points last week. We'll have problems because they also need to win desperately. Of course, our advantage is our homecourt, but it won't be easy. Spirou is a very disciplined team, they like long violations and only shoot when are comfortable. We have to make them feel uncomfortabel, what, I believe, we did last week playing against Artland Dragons. This game is like a final for us, because if we win, we guarantee ourselves a place in the Final Eight."
ANZULOVIC, DRAZEN
Spirou Basket
"We didn't win the last two games, in Bilbao and Oostende this weekend, but we're in a good rhythm. Our level could be sufficient for a winning game in Vilnius, even if we will have to restrict our turnovers, because we make too many mistakes for now. I think the pressure will be on home team too because we know it will probably be the decisive battle for qualification."

"We have to win this one, period. We're playing the game at home, everyone expects us to do it. The key to win is really simple: maximum concentration and avoiding stupid childish turnovers which we had in Belgium. Yeah, they won last time, so I can't really say we're stronger yet. But I have no doubt we will prevail in this one."
Chuck Eidson - Lietuvos RytasLietuvos Rytas made both itself and its next opponent quite happy on Tuesday by waltzing past visiting Spirou Basket to a 77-56 home that served to clinch two Final Eight qualifying spots from Group L. The victory lifted L. Rytas to a 4-1 record and also certified that iurbential Bilbao of Spain, still playing its game, could do no worse than a second-place tie with a team it beat twice, Spirou, now 2-3. As such, L. Rytas and Bilbao will meet next week in Spain to decide which finishes first and second. On Tuesday, L. Rytas made no doubt about it while following point forward Chuck Eidson's lead to an easy triumph over the only team that had defeated it in this round. Eidson finished with 19 points and 10 assists for the winners. Milko Bjelica added 12, Arturas Jomantas 11 and Marijonas Petravicius 10. With an 11-0 run, L. Rytas jumped in front 13-5 to start the game and only let Spirou get as close as 7 points the rest of the way. The L. Rytas defense stopped everything Spirou tried, limiting top scorer Jerry Johnson to just 3 points after he scored his team's first 5. Jonathan Tabu matched Johnson, but otherwise L. Rytas plugged every possible scoring threat as soon as it happened to ensure a trip to the Final Eight starting April 2 in Turin, Italy.

Johnson gave Spirou a quick 2-5 lead on a triple and a layup before L. Rytas put the wraps on him while scoring the next 11 straight points, including triples by Mindaugas Lukauskis and Donatas Zavackas, who also added 3 points the hard way. After Eidson dunked to make it 13-5, Sacha Massot copied him to stop Spirou's slide, Bjelica took up the L. Rytas cause then, dominating the paint with 7 points in 3 minutes to put the hosts up 22-15 after one quarter. Bjelica kept going with the first basket of the second quarter before Tabu joined the scoring for Spirou with a pair of layups at 24-19. Jomantas answers with the same pair, however, before Petravicius ended a dry spell with a dunk for a double-digit advantage, 30-19. Wes Wilkinson helped Spiriou climb within 31-24, but another scoring run of 11-2 by L. Rtyas featured the same pair of triple-shooters who started the game, Zavackas and Lukauskis, supplying from long-distance the biggest lead yet, 42-26, at halftime.

Triples by Justin Hamilton and Matt Walsh got Spirou as close as 44-32 soon after the break. Eidson and Petravicius shared the next 5 points, however, and when the L. Rytas defense clamped down on their guests for several long minutes in the middle of the third quarter, Steponas Babrauskas brought out the big guns for the hosts. He drilled a killer pair of three-pointers that ballooned the difference to 57-38 at the end of 30 minutes. Eidson was drilled a triple early in the final quarter to make it 60-40, after which Spirou put together free throws and layups in a 2-8 run. Eidson put a stop to any comeback ideas with a fastbreak layup off a steal by Jomantas and his 10th assist, to Petravicius. He and Jomantas added back-to-back triples for good measure and a high lead of 74-50 that told the crowd in Vilnius - not to mention fans across the continent in Bilbao, Spain - to start booking tickets for Turin, Italy and the Final Eight!

Head Coaches

KURTINAITIS, RIMAS
Lietuvos Rytas
"First of all, I'm glad we made it to the next round. But it's not enough, I think we can go further and play better. A big thanks to my guys who give their hearts on the court. We played really aggressive defense and it worked tonight. I'm glad we controlled the game from the first till the last minute. Step by step, we were gaining the advantage until it reached 20 points. It has to do with our physical preparations in the gym. All in all, we still have many little details to fix before stepping into the final stage of the European season. I think every team in the Final Eight will have equal chances to get the cup."
ANZULOVIC, DRAZEN
Spirou Basket
"Congratulations to Lietuvos Rytas. They were much better on the court. That was our second game in the Eurocup in which we felt the pressure to win. But today we played not the way we usually do. Before, I was satisfied with the way my team performed, but not during the last two games, against Bilbao and Lietuvos Rytas."
