THE TAKE

Second place in Group A will be on the line when Dynamo Moscow hosts Olympiacos Piraeus on Thursday night at Krilatskoe Arena. Olympiacos (9-3) will clinch second place and remain in the hunt for first place if it wins. However, Dynamo Moscow (8-4) can overtake the Reds for second with a win by at least 14 points, which would give the home team a tiebreaker over Olympiacos after suffering an 86-73 defeat in Greece in November. Andrija Zizic matched his season high with 22 points that night, missing only one shot and making his only three-pointer of the season. Zizic should be prepared for extra minutes this week as big man Sofoklis Schortsanitis did not travel with the team. Olympiacos is coming off a shocking 72-91 home defeat against Efes Pilsen, which ended a three-game winning run. Dynamo has won its last three games, with center Lazaros Papadopoulos controlling the paint to the tune of 17 points on 62.8% shooting, 6.3 rebounds and 1 block in that stretch. The matchup of Zizic (14.3 ppg., 5.3 rpg.) and Ryan Stack (5.5 ppg., 4 rpg.) against Papadopoulos (16.4 ppg., 7.1 rpg.) and Obinna Ekezie (8.2 ppg., 4 rpg.) will play a major role in this game, but there are plenty of quality pairings to watch. The duels of swingmen Travis Hansen (13.2 ppg., 3.9 rpg.) of Dynamo and Alex Acker (15.4 ppg., 6.9 rpg., 2.2 spg.) of Olympiacos or Dynamo power forward Antonis Fotsis (14 ppg., 6.1 rpg.) against Olympiacos big man Ioannis Bourousis (7.9 ppg., 4 rpg.) are the stuff that great games are made of. In the backcourt, Bojan Popovic (10.9 ppg.) and Eddie Gill (7.3ppg.) lead the Dynamo attack, while Scoonie Penn (12.8 ppg., 4 apg.) and Henry Domercant (12.6 ppg.) push Olympiacos forward. Despite Dynamo's intimidating frontline, it is relatively week on the glass, averaging 30 rebounds per game compared to a league-best 36.6 from Olympiacos. It will be interesting to see how the potential mismatch at power forward, where Fotsis can shoot from the perimeter on bigger players or post up smaller guys, affects the flow of the game. If Fotsis can help negate Olympiacos's rebounding advantage, look for Dynamo, 5-1 at home this season, to capitalize. However, if Olympiacos's big interior trio can cause problems for Papadopoulos and Co., the visiting team could position itself well for the Top 16.

Quotes Head Coaches

IVKOVIC, DUSAN
Dynamo Moscow
"After an excellent start with best offensive play in all the Euroleague, Olympiacos in the last games showed some signals of a small crisis, but the Greek team is still so strong that we must play on a very high level to beat this team. Our basic targets will be control of the rebounds and fastbreaks. Also, we need very good defense. Nothing will be easy, especially in rebounds, because we are ranked 21st and Olympiacos is first. Yes, we are low because we played many games without Papadopoulos and Raicevic, but for the Top 16 we must to be better and this game is a good opportunity to improve in this aspect. I appreciate and respect Olympiacos and I know that we must to play an excellent game to win."
GERSHON, PINI
Olympiacos
"The game against Dynamo Moscow is perhaps the final of our group, since the result can decide the final standings. I am sure Dynamo will have great passion in this battle and if we want to come back with a win, we need to have more than them. It is not necessary to say that our goal is the victory, not to defend the 13-point margin of the first round. The situation is clear. We are going there to win. In comparison to the first game on our home court, there are many differences, but the main one is the presence of Lazaros Papadopoulos, who was injured and didn't appear in Athens. And definitely that Dynamo is competing at home and that they seem to be in great shape lately."

Players

EKEZIE, OBINNA
Dynamo Moscow
"I played my first game with Dynamo in Athens against Olympiacos and we lost. Now, we have the opportunity for revenge. We can do this because we can match up better than two month ago. Also, we need this victory to take a better possible position in the Top 16. I expect a great game."
BARLOS, NIKOS
Olympiacos
"Point difference? What are you talking about? Olympiacos cannot play for defending a margin anywhere we compete. This game is a totally different story than the battle we won at home. The Russians have found good rhythm and Papadopoulos's comeback is a great advantage for them. They also play at home, which means one more plus for Dynamo, but we don't have to worry about it. When you want to accomplish big things, you can't see home courts and opponents. I mean you have to go on every court to win them all. Our recent loss to Efes Pilsen was a good lesson for us, but we need to show that we are good students on the court."
Travis Hansen - Dynamo Moscow In a direct fight for second place in Group A, Dynamo sent a message that echoed all around the continent by downing Olympiacos 84-69 in Moscow on Thursday. The result meant, among other things, that Tau Ceramica (11-2) is Group A champion. Dynamo and Olympiacos both have 9-4 records now, but Dynamo is second in the standings due to having won Thursday by more than its previous loss to the Reds. Dynamo will finish second if it can win at Efes Pilsen in the last regular season game. Olympiacos needs to beat end-of-the-table RheinEnergie and hope that Efes downs Dynamo in order to finish second. Travis Hansen led Dynamo with 27 points. Antonis Fotsis posted a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds, Lazaros Papadopoulos and Eddie Gill each added 11 points while Bojan Popovic added 10 for the winners. Alex Acker had 17 points for Olympiacos, Ioannis Bourousis 15 and Henry Domercant 12. Dynamo stayed ahead almost all the way, while Hansen, Fotsis and Popovic fueled a 15-3 run late in the game that made sure of the difference needed for the tie-break advantage after Olympiacos had won their first meeting in Greece by 13 points.

Bojan Popovic opened the scoring with a four-meter shot for Dynamo but Domercant matched him at the other end and Scoonie Penn added another jumper for a 2-4 Olympiacos lead. Hansen got going with a driving layup that Andrija Zizic answered with a mid-range jumper. Popovic hit free throws while Dmitry Domani added the first good shot of the night from downtown to put Dynamo back ahead, 9-6. Domercant kept the Reds close with a nice jumper, while Ryan Stack became a dominant force on defense. Dynamo opted for outside shots and Hansen obliged, firing in consecutive three-pointers to give his team a 15-9 lead. Olympiacos kept struggling to score while Eddie Gill hit free throws to cap an 8-1 Dynamo run. Eventually, Ioannis Bourousis stepped up with a tip-in for the guests and Manolis Papamakarios added a mid-range jumper. By the time Domercant buried a triple, Olympiacos was within 19-16. Gill answered from downtown, however, and Acker's inside basket left a 22-18 score after 10 minutes

Henry Domercant - OlympiacosBourousis kept the Reds close with a jump-hook early in the second quarter. Hansen hit free throws for Dynamo, and Lazaros Papadopoulos 1 of 2 from the line, his first point of the game. Still, Panos Vasilopoulos brought the Reds closer, and even when Hansen buried a fallaway jumper, Acker copied him and Domercant added a fast break dunk to get Olympiacos even closer, 27-26. Dynamo wasn't ready to give up the lead, however, as Gill nailed a mid-range shot and Hansen flew in for a fastbreak dunk, forcing an Olympiacos timeout at 31-26. Antonis Fotsis returned with a power dunk and free throw to finish Dynamo's 9-0 run with the hosts now up by double digits, 36-26. Acker finally responded for Olympiacos but the Reds kept struggling. Domani fired in a triple to give Dynamo a 40-27 margin. Before the half could end, Hansen punctuated his performance with another strike from the arc for Dynamo's biggest lead yet, 45-31.

Just as after the opening tipoff, Popovic was again first to score in the second half, while Olympiacos couldn't find any points for 2 minutes until until Penn drove for layup. Points came the hard way now, as both teams intensified their defense, but Acker made free throws to get the Reds within single digits again, 47-38. Hansen answered with a high-flying put-back layup but Acker and Barlos brought Olympiacs even closer at 50-42. Dynamo couldn't score now, so head coach Dusan Ivkovic called a timeout to fix his team's offense. Stack scored in the paint for the Reds and by the time Acker buried a jumper, Olympiacos was even closer, 51-47. Dynamo again resisted, as Papadopoulos scored a low-post layup, Sergey Monya found his first basket driving and Gill hit a free throw to extend the lead to 56-49 after three quarters.

Although Papadopoulos began the last quarter with a dunk and another basket inside, Acker took over with a sweet fallaway jumper and Barlos added free throws to give Olympiacos some hope at 60-55. Dynamo now found another go-to scorer in Fotsis, who threw down consecutive dunks to make it 64-55 lead with 7 minutes to go. Penn fed Bourousis for a layup while Acker fired in a jumper that prompted a Dynamo timeout at 64-59. When play resumed, Popovic stepped up with a driving layup, Sergei Bykov added fastbreak points and Fotsis scored again for a new a double-digit margin, 70-59. Bouroussis hit free throws, but with the outcome clear and 3 minutes to go, both teams started minding the points differential. Hansen buried a triple for a 74-62 Dynamo margin while the Reds kept trying quick shots. Free throws by Papadopoulos, Fotsis and Popovic made it a 17-point game, 79-62, with 50 seconds to go. Bourousis found a tip-in but when Hansen answered from downtow, Dynamo had its hands on second place in Group A.

Head Coaches

IVKOVIC, DUSAN
Dynamo Moscow
"I want to congratulate my team for today's victory. We seriously prepared for this game, but I never told to my players about the difference we needed. Our target today was to play good defense against the best offensive team in Europe. We started in a good way and we absolutely controlled last two minutes. Tomorrow we'll continue our preparation for the next game in Turkey."

Players

DOMANI, DMITRY
Dynamo Moscow
"We didn't think about the difference - we just wanted to win, that's all. Maybe at the last minutes we started to push the ball hard in order to win by more than 13 points. We were focused on defense and rebounding - the two main aspects of the team-play and at the same time our problems."
PAPADOPOULOS, LAZAROS
Dynamo Moscow
"The game was exactly how I expected: intense, hard, with up-and-downs for both teams. I think that it was very important for us not starting the game thinking that we had to win by 13 points. We just went out there to play and win, but when we had the chance to beat Olympiacos by more than 13 points, we did it. We played excellent basketball in the last couple of minutes."
ZIZIC, ANDRIJA
Olympiacos
"We didn't control the game from the beginning; we made too many mistakes and let Dynamo win by more than 13 points. We had some serious problems against Efes - we had them tonight. We have a lot of work to do to be ready to start from them beginning at the second round. It will be much more difficult in the Top 16."
STACK, RYAN
Olympiacos
"We just played poor defense, turned the ball over a lot. Dynamo made some big shots, many easy baskets - it was a key to the game, as well as their defense. We have to continue work hard; we have two main players injured in Macijauskas and Schortsanitis."
