THE TAKE

Two teams looking to get the jump on Group E square off in Thessaloniki, Greece, on Thursday when Aris TT Bank hosts Fenerbahce Ulker at the Alexandrio Melathron. Both teams limped to the end of the regular season, but have many reasons to be optimistic heading into the Top 16. Aris dropped three of its last four to finish fifth in Group B at 7-7, but has completed a changing of the guard at the point guard spot with Darius Washington taking over as its starting playmaker. Moreover, the emergence of small forward Dimitris Tsaldaris as a reliable scoring option and the addition of Vladimer Boisa should help cover for the injured Reyshawn Terry, while star power forward Jeremiah Massey and shooting guard Bracey Wright provide the leadership and scoring needed for Aris to challenge. Fenerbahce dropped three in a row to finish fourth in Group C at 6-8, but now head coach Bogdan Tanjevic seems to have a full roster intact after injuries decimated his frontline over the last part of the regular season. Center Semih Erden is back after missing seven games, rebounding king Mirsad Turkcan returns after two games out and small forward James “Flight” White has recovered from an ankle injury. Those players provide extra offensive options for a team that is largely dependant upon star guard Willie Solomon, who is familiar with the baskets in Thessaloniki after leading Aris to the 2003 FIBA Europe League title. The matchup between Solomon and Washington could be the highlight of the game, as the two quick, high-scoring point guards duel. But the key matchup will likely be at power forward, as Turkcan, Omer Asik, Emir Preldzic and the rest of the deep Fener frontline try to contain Massey, who leads Aris in scoring, rebounds, steals and blocked shots. The X-factor for the Turkish champs could be swingman Tarence Kinsey, who if now is in tune with Solomon could become a dangerous offensive tandem. Aris swept two games from Fener in the regular season last year and Fener will be eager to erase those memories with a win. Expect to see a hard-fought and close game in this meeting, as both teams know that a win could set the tone for their Quarterfinal Playoffs challenges from this group.

Quotes Head Coaches

HERBERT, GORDON
Aris TT Bank
"Playing against Fenerbahce Ulker is far from an easy task. It's a well-built team based on a great offensive weapon in Will Solomon, who we have to stop in order to increase our possibilities to win this basketball game. Undoubtedly, this match is highly important for our team because we would like to protect our home advantage throughout the Top 16. However, it’s necessary to be tough from the beginning and to play as a team in each part of the game. We need to remain focused in defense and execute our offensive drills as accurate as possible."
TANJEVIC, BOGDAN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"It's going to be the first experience for Fenerbahce Ulker in the Top 16 and it's really very important for us. We were in a critical situation because of the injuries and are expecting to see all our players practicing together for this game. And I will be very happy if I see James White and Semih Erden playing just for seven or eight minutes in the rotation. I also hope to see Tarence Kinsey ready for this game. That's all in my mind about how we will arrive for this meeting with Aris TT Bank. They lost to Olympiacos, but only by 2 points in the Greek Cup. They show already how strong they are. They have so many players who are very important, but they also bring some new and excellent guys like Darius Washington and Vladimer Boisa. They refreshed themselves and still stronger than before despite losing Terrell Castle. We will try to win as we are always targeting."

Players

MASSEY, JEREMIAH
Aris TT Bank
"Fenerbahce Ulker is not the same team that we faced last year in the first round. They are not stuck in two or three go-to guys, but they have a complete roster full of dangerous players. We have prepared ourselves for every situation both defensively and offensively, focusing in every detail of their game. It's important for us to fight with intensity and to remain concentrated on our defense in order to control the tempo of this battle and celebrate our first win in the Top 16."
ERDEN, SEMIH
Fenerbahce Ulker
"I'm really curious about rejoining the team and missed the game so much. I played just for three minutes in the Turkish Cup and am trying to improve my game after the injury. This is going to be the first time in the Top 16 for us and we are hoping to make a good start. I believe in the team that we can make another step forward in our group. Aris TT Bank beat Efes Pilsen twice in the first round and this is enough for us to understand what a hard game is waiting for us in Thessaloniki. But we trust ourselves and will try to win for a good start."
Will Solomon - Fenerbahce Ulker Fenerbahce Ulker started the Top 16 in style by downing Aris TT Bank 88-96 on the road in Thessaloniki, Greece on Thursday in the Group E opener for both teams. Aris ties Tau Ceramica for the top spot in Group E at 1-0, while Fenerbahce and Lietuvos Rytas are 0-1. Willie Solomon led the winners with 23 points. Emir Preldzic added 13, Semih Erden has 12 while Tarence Kinsey and Damir Kaan each got 10 for Fenerbahce. Jeremiah Massey and Bracey Wright each had 17 points for Aris while Darius Washington and a recovered Reyshawn Terry added 16 apiece. The sellout crowd in Thessaloniki included former Fenerbahce Ulker star Ibrahim Kutluay. Fenerbahce managed to stop Massey in the early going, while Savas, Solomon and a dominant Asik allowed the guests to get a 21-29 lead after 10 minutes. Massey shined in the second quarter, especially in defense, while a 7-0 run that Washington capped with a triple tied it at 39-39. Solomon and Kinsey allowed Fenerbahce to get a 43-50 halftime edge. Kinsey and an outstanding Erden allowed Fenerbahce to get a 51-64 margin midway through the third quarter. Massey and Washington fueled the hosts' comeback, while a close jumper by Giorgios Kalaitzis tied the game, 77-77, with less than 4 minutes to go. Preldzic and Solomon took over in crunch time whole free throws by Kaan sealed the outcome, 82-89, in the final 2 minutes.

The guests from Fenerbahce started the game at full speed and achieved an early lead of 2-6 by exploiting Savas's size under the basket. Darius Washington buried his first triple to bring his team closer but Savas was unstoppable in the first 3 minutes of the game. Aris couldn't find offensive solutions under the rim, while Solomon boosted Fenerbahce's margin all the way to 5-12. Hanno Mottola tried to wake up his team with another triple, but Preldzic kept his team ahead in the midpoint of the quarter forcing Aris to ask for a timeout at 10-14. Nothing changed when both teams came back, as Damir Kaan fired from beyond the arc and Erden netted a jumper to push Fenerbahce up 13-21. Washington answered for Aris by sparking a 6-0 run capped by Wright’s triple, but Onan and Kaan stole and shared successful fastbreaks to give Fenerbahce its biggest lead yet, 19-29, at the close of the first quarter.

Darius Washington - Aris TT BankMassey decided to take Aris on his shoulders to start the second quarter, isolating against Erdem twice to reduce the difference to 25-29. But despite their efforts, the hosts couldn't close the gap due to James White and Solomon hitting shots from downtown. With his team trailing 29-37, Vladimir Boisa entered the game to give Aris a push. He fired from beyond the arc to start a decisive 10-2 run for Aris capped by another triple by Washington that tied the score 39-39. Fenerbahce reacted strong, taking back the lead as White hit another jumper and Solomon shot twice from the foul line to let the guests take a 43-50 advantage into halftime.

Fenerbahce kept control early in the third quarter with Erden and Solomon contributing to 0-7 run that expanded the lead to 43-57, the highest margin of the night. Terry stood up and managed to keep Aris alive with back-to-back triples and a layup that made it 49-59. Fenerbahce always had an offensive answer, however. so that when Bracey Wright netted a triple to bring his team within 58-67 late in the quarter, Preldzic answered back with 5 points in a row to give fresh air to his team, 60-70, after 30 minutes.

Savas Oguz - Fenerbahce UlkerAris tightened its defense to start the final quarter as Washington and Massey scored to trim the difference to 66-72. Fenerbahce went to a zone defense but Massey kept hurting the guests under the basket, assisting Wright to bring Aris within, 71-74. Solomon and Tsaldaris traded shots from the arc then, but Fenerbahce led until Giorgios Kalaitzis forged the first tie of the second half, 77-77, with 4 minutes left. Preldzic again muted the masses with back-to-back baskets on isolation moves in the lane to give Fenerbahce a small but significant lead, 79-83. Both Kalaitzis and Erden shared trips in the foul line before Solomon stood up and buried the crucial triple of the game at 82-87. Preldzic took it from there, fixing the final outcome at 88-96 for a huge road win by Fenerbahce.

Head Coaches

HERBERT, GORDON
Aris TT Bank
"I am really disappointed with our performance, especially in defense. Even though we never surrendered, you cannot win a basketball game if your opponent scores 90 points. I don't like they way we played tonight. It is very tough to start the Top 16 with a home loss, so we have to bounce back and win the next game."
TANJEVIC, BOGDAN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"This win is nothing more than the first step. I hope that my players will keep playing like this in the upcoming games. I would like to congratulate everyone for today's performance. We are a young team and take every game as a lesson for the future."

Players

TSALDARIS, DIMITRIOS
Aris TT Bank
"We were not focused enough to win this basketball game. We committed many turnovers and allowed Fenerbahce to score some easy baskets. I don't know why this happened. Maybe we haven't got the experience to play such games. We just lost a game and that's all. Its time to stand up, work hard and do our best to win the rest of the games to reach the Quarterfinal Playoffs."
PRELDZIC, EMIR
Fenerbahce Ulker
"We played very well in the opening three quarters. All my teammates were really determined to win this game in front of such an unbelievable crowd. I love playing here, especially being able to beat a very good team like Aris. We have to keep winning in order to make it to the Quarterfinal Playoffs."
