THE TAKE

Start with a coach who has won the Euroleague twice, a player who matches that total, the MVP of this season's Top 16 and last year's regular season, and the scoring leader in both previous seasons. So far, you have only scratched the surface of the star power that will be on display when two Italian powerhouses, Benetton Treviso and Montepaschi Siena, face each other in the first semifinal on Friday. Benetton, simply put, scores as much or more as any elite pro team on the planet. During the regular season, its points-per-minute average exceeded that of the highest-scoring NBA team. And then, in the Top 16, Montepaschi almost matched Benetton. They say that defense rules at a Final Four, but there is an open question here as to whether either defense can really stop the other team from scoring. Slow them down, perhaps, but with a floor full of players who couldn't miss even if they wanted to, the expectation for Friday is a shooting spree that will last all 40 minutes.

Within the frame, there are nothing but stars. Starting with Benetton, you have point guard Tyus Edney, who has been a Euroleague winner and MVP before, with Zalgiris Kaunas in 1999, and has only gotten better since. His speed is a factor mentioned by anyone who comments on the Final Four as a potentially deciding factor in Benetton's favor. To his side is Trajan Langdon, an all-around scoring ace in his first year over from the NBA, but also a team player who knows all about pressure games from his NCAA days at Duke University. Next comes veteran wizard Riccardo Pittis, Euroleague winner in 1987 and 1988 with Milan, one of the few players who can take over games without scoring a point or taking a rebound: His passing and defense are that good. At power forward is Jorge Garbajosa, another player of superstar quality, whose rebounding, shooting and intensity a potent mix by world standards. At center, veteran Denis Marconato is having the best season of career, making almost 8 out of 10 shots he takes, almost unprecedented at this level. Now take a deep breath, because in Benetton's arsenal there is plenty more. Backup point guard Massimo Bulleri would start for most of the teams on the continent. His speed and ability to hit big shots have changed entire games. In the frontcourt, veteran shootist Marcelo Nicola is a player who demands constant attention lest he drill an opponent right out of the game. Then come the young guns - Manuchar Markoishvili, Kresimir Loncar, Nick Eppehimer and Tomas Soltau - who are trained in giving precise help in limited minutes despite their youth. The whole adds up to one of the best offensive teams ever assembled in Europe, but no one should forget that two-time Euroleague champion Ettore Messina is on the bench. Messina's forte is defense, and Benetton's incredible consistency - as the only team to go undefeated in the Top 16 - is testimony to his ability to make Benetton as capable defensively as it needs to be. Quickness on the perimeter is the main defensive quality of the team, and that translates into trouble for opposing three-point shooters. Benetton will makes its share of three-pointers - that's practically a given - so if it can keep Montepaschi from doing the same, it will have a big advantage on Friday.

On the other hand, despite some fine sharpshooters, Montepaschi's ability to put up points is not based solely on the three-point line. Instead, all-around scoring ace Alphonso Ford does it inside or out, driving or launching triples, and everything in between. Three Euroleague seasons in which he has been at or near the top among the best scorers is proof that he will get his points. If he also happens to draw fouls, he can put even a team as deep as Benetton in trouble. If Ford is the outside superstar for Montepaschi, everyone knows the name of the inside one: Mirsad Turkcan. The Top 16 MVP this season and regular season MVP last year brings unique qualities to the court, chief among them the ability to take over games even though his team need not feed him the ball consistently. Turkcan is simply the premier rebounder in Europe, but what's more remarkable is that he doesn't plant himself under the basket to accomplish that. He is a jumping jack who sets up inside or out. Besides assuring his team that the opponent gets only one shot per possession, he gets what are called "opportunity baskets", meaning they come in the flow of play and not from the chalkboard of his coach. Those kinds of players are rare, indeed. Around those two Montepaschi has arrayed top-notch specialists. At poing guard, Vrbica Stefanov is as quick as perhaps any point guard, maybe even Edney and CSKA Moscow's J.R. Holden. His ability to drive the basket and defend Edney will be key on Friday. Starting at small forward is Mindaugas Zukauskas, a born shooter who also has won a Euroleague title with Zalgiris. If he gets hot, Montepaschi is that much more dangerous. In the middle is Siena's signature player, Roberto Chiacig, who has a big body and knows what to do with it. He also knows do-or-die pressure from having led Montepaschi to the Saporta Cup title this time last year. Off the bench comes one player who is far too talented to be called a specialist. Mikalis Kakiouzis joined Montepaschi for the Top 16, and is the main difference between a team that struggled to make it that far and then knocked off defending champ Panathinaikos to reach the Final Four. His all-around game - scoring, shooting and rebounding - is only exceeded by his affinity for making big plays with the game on the line. Also off the bench comes sharpshooter Dusan Vukcevic, another veteran who can change the scoreboard with a hot hand. Another key frontcourt backup is Cal Bowdler, brought in for his defense and rebounding, but capable of hitting key baskets. Aaron Mitchell, Marco Mordente and Giancarlo Marcaccini are all ready for giving minutes of rest and sure defense as needed. Although he and his team are new to the Euroleague, head coach Ergin Ataman is certainly used to the big moments, having coached Efes in a previous Final Four and taken Montepaschi to Saporta Cup triumph in his first season in Siena.

Quotes Head Coaches

ATAMAN, ERGIN
Montepaschi Siena
"The people who arrive from Siena, it's true, this is their first experience, but on my team I have players who have played European national team finals, and won, and who have won championships in Greece and Italy. I don't think experience is a problem for us. For me, it's the second time, and the last time I lived very well the first one in 2000, but this one is much better. I think also that we not only will have 3,000 fans coming from Siena, but the Barcelona fans will be for us, because I think they prefer to play Siena than Benetton in the final because Benetton is one of the favorites to win the Euroleague title. So I think with 3,000 Siena fans and 10,000 Barcelona fans we will play like a home team tomorrow. Then in the final, if we make it, we will see."
MESSINA, ETTORE
Benetton Basket
"I think playing the Final Four versus another Italian team is very strange for both teams. I didn't change much on how to plan the game, but I consider things that have happened previously in the game against Montepaschi. Either of the teams can win it, but whichever that team will be, both clubs believe the other finalist still have a long way to win."

TURKCAN, MIRSAD
Montepaschi Siena
"At the moment, I feel as always. We'll try to be ready for the match, but I know it's going to be hard. We have a 50 percent chance, but if we play good defense, we'll have a chance to win. In my opinion, defense is the key to the match."
STEFANOV, VRBICA
Montepaschi Siena
"I have to play a great defense against Tyus Edney and have my team in this phase. I know Benetton has unbelievable offensive players and from our side, it is the same at an Euroleague Final Four. We only have to put 100 percent energy on the court and try to win the semifinal. We have to change the way to play, despite the last match in Treviso, where we lost 110-100."
KAKIOUZIS, MICHAILIS
Montepaschi Siena
"I played with AEK Athens against Benetton in 1998 Final Four in Barcelona. So, same opponent will mean the same result. I don't say we will win for sure, but why not? The key point is our defense, because theirs is a very offensive team. They can score over 90 points per game, but I don't think they will score that much tomorrow."
PITTIS, RICCARDO
Benetton Basket
"The first thing to be aware is to forget the two games we won this season. They don't count anymore. Tomorrow will be a completely different game, a do-or-die one. We have to be afraid of all the Siena team, not only afraid of Ford or Turkcan, or any single player. I think that all the team is a strong one."
Jorge Garbajosa - Benetton Treviso - FF Barcelona 2003 The first finalist for the Euroleague title is none other than Benetton Treviso! In an incredible tale of two halves, Benetton beat Italian rival Montepaschi Siena 62-65 to make the Euroleague final for the second time in 11 years. Benetton lost all of a 19-point first-half lead when it was held to just two field goals in more than 10 minutes of the second. Down 6 points going into the final 3 minutes, however, Benetton revived. Massimo Bulleri was the hero, scoring Benetton's last 7 points. His three-pointer with 37 seconds left took back the lead, and his free throws with 7 seconds left sealed it. Jorge Garbajosa led the winners with 14 points, while Vrbica Stefanov drilled 17 for Montepaschi, whose second-half comeback had Palau Sant Jordi stunned. Benetton will await the results of Friday's second semifinal, between FC Barcelona and CSKA Moscow, to know the name of its title game opponent for Sunday night.

The swings seen in this game are rare to see in normal games, let alone a semifinal. Montepaschi's comeback was one of the biggest in Final Four history, but the fact that it could not be completed is what will be remembered. Benetton's experience certainly seemed to matter in the tense final minutes as a pair of Montepaschi turnovers hurt them badly. But Benetton faced the tougher situation, down 6 points with under 4 minutes left, with poise. Besides his 14 points, 12 of which came at the foul line, Garbajosa had 10 rebounds. Benetton got 12 points each from Bulleri and Denis Marconato, who added 10 rebounds. Alphonso Ford scored 15 more points for Montepaschi, Dusan Vukcevic 14 and Mikalis Kakiouzis 10 with 13 rebounds.

Michail Kakiouzis - Montepaschi Siena - FF Barcelona 2003Montepaschi started Stefanov, Ford, Vukcevic, Turkcan and Chiacig. Benetton Started Edney, Langdon, Pittis, Garbajosa and Marconato. The Benetton center was the man in the early going, blocking shots and ripping rebounds as his team jumped out to an 0-8 lead. Trajan Langdon opened the scoring, Pittis knocked down and outside shot, Marconato dunked and his block sent Langdon on a fastbreak that forced a quick Montepaschi timeout. The break didn't help, Marconato came back with another basket for 0-10. By the time Dusan Vukcevic got a fastbreak layup to put Montepaschi on the board, almost 4 minutes had passed. But Benetton's defense was not letting up. The lead kept rising, to 16-4 on another Marconato layup, before Vukcevic landed the game's first three-pointer. That, however, was answered at the other end by Marcelo Nicola, and when Tyus Edney twisted inside for a basket-plus-foul, the Benetton advantage reached 7-22. Mikalis Kakiouzis and Alphonso Ford checked in with their first baskets for Montepaschi, but that was counterbalanced by Mirsad Turkcan's second foul, putting Jorge Garbajosa on the line for the game's biggest lead yet, 11-28, before Aaron Mitchell got a point back at the line to end the quarter 12-28.

The second half was marked from the start by the defenses. That Benetton couldn't score despite two offensive rebounds on the first possession was a clue. Vukcevic drove again to raise his personal point total to 7, half of his team's points on a 14-28 scoreboard, but the other Montepaschi stars were still missing. Marconato resurfaced for another dunk, alone under the basket, and Trajan Langdon landed a shot as the Benetton lead climbed again to 14-32, but points were otherwise hard to come by. Ford muscled in a rebound then got a point at the foul line. Stefanov then flashed to the hoop for a layup that made it 21-34, Montepaschi's most hopeful moment in awhile. But Bulleri erased that with a drive-plus-foul and Garbajosa scored for the highest lead yet, 21-39. In what would prove a clue to the secone half, Stefanov drove for the last basket of the first, leaving the scoreboard at 23-39 in favor of Benetton, who still seemed in complete control.

Defense remained the theme at the start of the third quarter, especially on Montepaschi's part. Down big on the scoreboard, they put a lockdown on Benetton's scorers and started climbing back one hard-won point at a time. An early basket by Edney made it 25-41, but after that, no one on Benetton could seem to find the basket. Meanwhile Kakiouzis and Ford got the line for 3 points, and Mindaugas Zukauskas matched that on a driving layup plus free throw. The lead was down to 10 points, 31-41, and Benetton needed to react. But Montepaschi's defense refused. Ford got the deficit down to double-digits with a baseline drive, and after Garbajosa ended Benetton's dry spell from the line, Stefanov drove to make it 35-43. Montepaschi's rebounding started taking care of the rest, as Zukauskas and Kakiouzis got to the line by pulling down big boards. Meanwhile, Stefanov's pick-and-rolls were a puzzle to Benetton. He drove for a basket to make it 41-43 and complete a 2-16 Montepaschi run. Benetton's only offense was coming from Garbajosa, and then at the foul line. But his next 2 free throws did not stop Montepaschi. Kakiouzis rollicked for a fastbreak layup and Vukcevic repeated the play to tie the game at the end of 30 minutes, 45-45.

Riccardo Pittis - Benetton Treviso - FF Barcelona 2003Montepaschi completed the long march from 18 down when Ford drilled a three-pointer to open the final quarter. And kept going from there. Another pair of Garbajosa free throws were answered by drives from Stefanov and Ford. When Vukcevic lined up and buried a three-pointer, Montepaschi led 55-47. Benetton looked like Montepaschi had in the first quarter, its stars getting nothing and its shooters literally missing everything. At that point, Benetton had made only 1 of 12 three-pointers for the game. But now, Langdon was left wide open and didn't refuse the luck. Montepaschi still looked good, however, because Stefanov couldn't be stopped. He drove again and added 1 of 2 from the line for 58-52 with less than four minutes left. Garbajosa got 2 back for Benetton at the line, but the key play was the next basket, Nicola taking advantage of a Montepaschi turnover and driving the length of the court for a dunk that made it 56-58. Montepaschi was caught sleeping, and that was a sign. Garbajosa again got to the line for two more to tie it 58-58 up with 2 minutes, 16 seconds left. A whole minute passed in which Turkcan saved two great offensive rebounds that allowed Vukcevic to drive to the hoop for a 60-58 Montepaschi lead. But Bulleri was fouled with 51.6 seconds left and made both free throws. Stefanov copied him, for another Montepaschi lead, 62-60, but the rest of the game belonged to Bulleri. On Benetton's next possession, he surveyed the scene and decided the little room in front of him was enough to launch a triple from the top of the circle. It fell in soft as a feather and Benetton had the lead back. At the other end, Ford backed into the lane, but his pass to Kakiouzis was interrupted by a whistle. Kakiouzis had stepped on the end line while receiving the pass. Montepaschi now had to foul, and despite a near steal by Ford in midcourt, Bulleri went to the line with 7.3 seconds left. He was perfect now, too. Siena would need a three to save its dream, but the shot Kakiouzis launched from more than 3 meters fell short. Benetton was going to the final.
