THE TAKE

Olympiacos Piraeus returns home after suffering its first loss of the new season ready to challenge Group B co-leader Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius at the Peace and Friendship Stadium on Wednesday night. The Reds are coming off an 86-68 drubbing at Unicaja in which they also lost All-Euroleague big man Ioannis Bourousis for several weeks. Head coach Panagiotis Giannakis’s men will have to regroup quickly to be ready for upstart L. Rytas, which led by Euroleague MVP for October Bojan Popovic, has been one of the biggest surprises of the season so far. L. Rytas comes off a 62-69 win at Entente Orleanaise in which Popovic produced 11 points and 9 assists and backcourt mate Martynas Gecevicus – who is second in the league in three-pointers made with 9 – scored 16. The L. Rytas backcourt will face its biggest challenge yet this week as Olympiacos is loaded in both quality and quantity at every position. It’s not only the depth, but also the many different looks and styles the Red have that could trouble L. Rytas. Popovic, with Vidas Ginevicius backing him up, will need to contend with Patrick Beverley and Theo Papaloukas, while Gecevicius and Steponas Babrauskas must stay sharp at both ends of the floor against Milos Teodosic, Von Wafer and Yotam Halperin. At small forward, Josh Childress will need to be weary of the visiting Arturas Jomantas, whose experience, athleticism and fearless play could be the recipe to slow down the Reds’ weapon. Without Bourousis, Nikola Vujcic will take on a more central role in the paint along with Andreas Glyniadakis and Sofoklis Schortsianitis. Aron Baynes and Dejan Borovnjak, who are short on experience, but high on energy, will lock horns with the Reds in the paint. At power forward, the home team will send top scorer Linas Kleiza and Panos Vasilopoulos against Donatas Zavackas and Milko Bjelica. Before the season this game may have seemed like a mismatch, especially in Greece, however L. Rytas’s strong start has turned this into a pivotal Group B clash. Popovic has been the keys to his team’s success thus far, not only with his passes to create open shots but also his on-court leadership. L. Rytas’s hopes this week could rest on how he handles the waves of Red players coming at him and how much energy Popovic has left in the tank by the fourth quarter.

GAME NOTES

Olympiacos

Forward Linas Kleiza and Lietuvos Rytas swingman Arturas Jomantas were teammates this summer on the Lithuanian national team at EuroBasket 20009.

Kleiza, Jomantas and Steponas Babrauskas, also of L. Rytas, helped Lithuania to a silver medal at the 2003 World Under-19 Championships and a bronze medal at the 2004 European Under-20 Championships.

Center Nikola Vujcic is 6 offensive rebounds behind his former Maccabi teammate Marcus Goree for 10th place on the career offensive rebounding chart. Vujcic currently has 238 career offensive rebounds.

Theo Papaloukas is closing in on a spot among the best 20 career scorers in the Euroleague. Papaloukas now has 1,397 points – 17 away from 20th place.

Lietuvos Rytas

Bojan Popovic and Olympiacos guard Milos Teodosic Milos were teammates during the 2004-05 season at FMP.

Popovic was named Euroleague MVP of the Month for the first time in his career after leading L. Rytas to a 2-0 start with 11 points and a league-best 9.5 assists per game.

Martynas Gecevicius has yet to miss a free throw in a Euroleague game, shooting 11 for 11 from the line in 20 career Euroleague appearances.

Gecevicius has made at least one three-pointer in five straight Euroleague games and is shooting 66.7% from downtown over that span.

Quotes Head Coaches

GIANNAKIS, PANAGIOTIS
Olympiacos
“Lietuvos Rytas started excellent the 2009-10 Euroleague and proved that it is in very good shape. We have to play against a team that plays fast and has a lot of shooting options. Our goal is to defend against their shots, to keep our concentration in defense and try to have a fast rhythm. In our last Greek League game, we played against Maroussi without spectators, due to a sanction, and now we are looking forward to having their support.”
KURTINAITIS, RIMAS
Lietuvos Rytas
"Although we didn't have much time to practice thoroughly, I can say we prepared for this game quite carefully. We have watched the tapes and analyzed what type of game Olympiacos usually plays. Olympiacos is a very powerful team that has won many titles in the past. Moreover, they usually play great at home, where they are supported by great fans. After they lost in Malaga, they must feel a bit of pressure from both the fans and the board. Then again, they will try hard to make up for it in front of their own crowd. We expect a tough game, obviously. If we win in Greece, Olympiacos will have to fight much harder for a spot in the Top 16."

Players

VUJCIC, NIKOLA
Olympiacos
“They won two games and they are a team that deserves respect and a lot of attention. Our job is not an easy one, because they shoot a lot of three pointers and they can beat anybody.”
JOMANTAS, ARTURAS
Lietuvos Rytas
"There's not a lot to tell about Olympiacos except that they have many stars on their team. We'll see: I can only say we'll have to play both good defence and offence. I think their weakest link is their defence. They have individually strong guys who mostly want to attack the rim and not to defend it. Also, quite often one of the players suddenly doesn't care about set plays and tries to beat the rim on his own. We'll try to use that".
Linas Kleiza - OlympiacosOlympiacos bounced back from its initial loss in the 2009-10 Euroleague regular season and improved to 2-1 by downing previously undefeated Lietuvos Rytas 97-73 at home on Wednesday night. Both teams tie for second place in Group A, each with a 2-1 record and right behind undefeated leader Unicaja, that hosts Efes Pilsen tomorrow. Linas Kleiza led the winners with 20 points. Josh Childress added 18 on 6-of-6 two-pointers while Milos Teodosic had 12 for Olympiacos. Milko BJelica led L. Rytas with 16 points. Arturas Jomantas added 15 while Steponas Babrauskas had 12 for the guests. Childress had 10 points in the first quarter while Teodosic beat the buzzer with a wild three-pointer to give Olympiacos a double-digit lead, 25-14, after 10 minutes. Olympiacos kept playing hard at both ends, taking advantage of its outstanding athleticism, while Kleiza had 12 points in the second period to break the game open, 52-31, at halftime. L. Rytas managed to get within 56-44 midway through the third quarter but Theo Papaloukas, Nikola Vujcic and Childress fueled a 17-2 run that sealed the outcome late in the third quarter.

Olympiacos head coach Panagiotis Giannakis opted to use Sofoklis Schortsianitis in the starting lineup and get him one-on-one situations in each and every play. He got his team going with a power layup but a running jumper by Martynad Gecevicius tied it at 2-2. Childress and Aron Baynes exchanged baskets but a triple by Bojan Popovic gave L. Rytas its first lead, 4-7. L. Rytas excelled at double-teaming Schortsianitis so Olympiacos changed its game plan, playing more up-tempo. Childress dunked it while a jump hook by Schortsianitis gave the Reds a 8-7 edge. Bjelica stepped up with a close basket but Childress followed an off-balance jumper with free throws to restore a 12-9 Olympiacos lead. The Reds tried to improve their ball circulation with Vujcic and Papaloukas on court now. Kleiza struck from downtown and soon added a layup to boost his team's lead to 17-12. Papaloukas took over with a layup-plus-foul, as L. Rytas kept struggling to score now. Childress and Baynes traded dunks and a wild buzzer-beating three-pointer by Teodosic fixed the score at 25-14 after 10 minutes.

The Reds kept trying to play up-tempo early in the second quarter, with Papaloukas and Teodosic together on court. Jomantas tried to change things with a driving layup but Panos Vasilopoulos and Teodosic kept the Reds way ahead, 28-16. L. Rytas could not find the way to the basket while Kleiza struck again from downtown to break the game open, 32-16, after a 6-0 run. Jomantas kept pacing the guests but he didn't find much help around. Childress dunked it again but Olympiacos had already entered the foul bonus. Popovic hit 4-of-4 free throws but Von Wafer and an unstoppable Kleiza gave the hosts an 18-point lead, 39-21. Bjelica shined with a three-point play but L. Rytas only managed to trade baskets now. A reverse layup by Patrick Beverley made the guests call timeout at 45-25. Olympiacos kept taking advantage of its athleticism, using short possessions and quickly finding good options in offense. Kleiza shined with a coast-to-coast three-point play and added a fast break layup to keep the Reds out of trouble, 52-31, at halftime.

Milko Bjelica - Lietuvos RytasBjelica scored in transition immediately after the break, as L. Rytas tried to play with more intensity at both ends now. Olympiacos struggled to find Schortsianitis down low while a three-pointer by Gecevicius gave the guests some hope at 52-36. Yotam Halperin immediately answered from downtown and Childress added a free throw to keep Olympiacos way ahead, 56-36. Babrauskas fired in one from downtown but Olympiacos stick to its game plan, with Vujcic on court to open the court for its wing players. Bjelica scored again while Donatas Zavackas sank a corner triple to make the Reds call timeout at 56-44. Teodosic sank a triple and fed Vujcic for an easy basket, allowing the Reds to get back the game momentum. Kleiza and Childress soon joined the three-point shootout to boost the hosts' lead to 69-46. Vujcic kept pacing Olympiacos while Papaloukas capped a 17-2 run with free throws. An acrobatic driving layup by Jomantas got L. Rytas within 75-50 after three quarters.

The outcome was clear already but L. Rytas now tried to trim its deficit to avoid a huge disadvantage in multiple-way ties at the end of the regular season. Teodosic, however, stepped up with consecutive layups and collected a steal that allowed Wafer to make it a 29-point game, 83-54. Popovic tried to speed up the game tempo but Olympiacos kept making the most out of its physical game. Another dunk by Childress boosted the Reds' margin to 86-56. Jomantas and Gecevicius kept trying to change things for L. Rytas but it was already too little, too late for the guests. Olympiacos confirmed its status as a top candidate to win Group B while L. Rytas must forget about this loss right away and learn from its mistakes for its upcoming home game against Partizan.

Head Coaches

GIANNAKIS, PANAGIOTIS
Olympiacos
"The team showed the crowd good basketball tonight. We played well throughout the whole game. And even when we lost a bit of our concentration because of the big lead, we came back and increased the margin again. We controlled the game from minute one. We had to face a team that runs and shoots the ball very well, but we handled them. We will keep trying to improve day by day. Our goal is to reduce our turnovers and increase our speed. Time will do us good. We have to be ready for the knockout games, and we will be learning through different situations during the season."
KURTINAITIS, RIMAS
Lietuvos Rytas
"I would like to congratulate coach Giannakis and his team for this win. Olympiacos needed this win after its bad performance and the defeat to Unicaja in Spain. They were better than us in all levels. Quicker and stronger than us. We kind of lost before the tip-off. Olympiacos had a perfect game tonight, both on the offensive and the defensive end. They played a great game, one that we wish we could play too."

Players

KLEIZA, LINAS
Olympiacos
"We started focused and had the opportunity to build a good difference early in the game. We created some open shots and executed well. We managed to run the floor and finish some easy fast breaks. I think that the fans enjoyed some good plays. We are still on the road to improving and need time. As far as my performance, I feel happy whenever the team wins no matter how many points have I scored. It's always nice to score a lot, but the important thing is to win the games. We have such a deep roster that I don't have to worry who's going to score the points. All the guys can contribute."
