THE TAKE

Gran Canaria hosts PGE Turow in Group F action with both teams looking to get in the win column for the first time in this short season after suffering tough losses in Week 1. Gran Canaria fell hard on the road to Panellinios BC by the score of 89-60 and will surely see this game as key to righting its European ship and regaining some shaken confidence. PGE Turow let SLUC Nancy walk away from its home court with a 72-75 victory and now faces the challenge of winning on one of the toughest courts in the Eurocup. Fortunately for Turow, it has the weapons to do just that. Versus Nancy, guard Willie Dean and center Michael Wright formed a vicious tandem. Wright paced Turow with 26 points while Dean tallied an impressive 22 points. Forward Robert Witka provides a valuable third option, and guard Michael Chilinsky and forward Konrad Wysocki are key role players who round out Turow’s starting five. The problem for Turow is that its bench – primarily guard Justin Gray and forwards Adam Wojcik and Krzysztof Roszyk – will need to pick up more of the slack than they did in Week 1 if Turow hopes to prevail against a very deep Gran Canaria. At guard, Gran Canaria can look to the scoring of Jaycee Carroll and the playmaking skills of Tomas Bellas. Reserve Melvin Saunders adds sure offensive production, while point guard Marcus Norris comes off the bench for valuable minutes and veteran leadership. Speaking of leadership, center Sitapha Savane brings plenty to the lockerroom, huddle and court, and Will McDonald subs in to add shot-blocking and points in the low post. Gran Canaria is rounded out at the forward spot with the starting pair of Jim Moran and James Augustine. The home team will need to get all the support it can from its fans to make sure it can fend off the invaders. Turow, on the other hand, will need to try and get out early so as to take the Gran Canaria supporters out of the game from early on.

"Iit will be a very hard game, a long trip - but we are going there to have a good fight. We know a lot about our opponent and we know also that Gran Canaria has good players. But we are also a well-assembled team and we will do everything in our hands to try to pull the road win."
Jaycee Carroll - Gran Canaria 2014Supported by its legions of roaring home fans, Gran Canaria 2014 defended its home court against PGE Turow 85-74 to register its first win of the Eurocup regular season. Gran Canaria is now 1-1 in Group G, while Turow fell to 0-2. Jaycee Carroll led the way to victory with 18 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Turow was paced by Michael Wright, who was unstoppable inside, scoring dunk after dunk for a total of 25 points. Willie Deane seconded him with 16 points to go with 6 assists in a losing effort. Gran Canaria got the big win thanks to a balanced group effort, out-rebounding Turow 42-32 while dishing out 22 assists as team.

McDonald dunked, and after a layup by Carroll, Gran Canaria was up 9-6. Moments later Wright tied it with a layup, but McDonald answered with a slam. Wright hit right back with a dunk of his own despite being fouled for a 2-plus-1. Carroll drilled a three, and James Augustine added a jumper to go up 18-12. Justin Gray hit with a jumper, and Adam Wojcik dropped a three to pull Turow back to within 18-17 after 10 minutes. Wojcik and Augustine started the second by trading dunks before Jim Moran nailed a three-pointer for the home team. Pawel Leonczyk made a pair of free throws for the visitors. Josh Fisher and Wysocki each nailed three-pointers for their teams. Moments later, Carroll hit again from downtown. Wright made a 2-plus-1, but Marcus Norris stepped back and struck from beyond the arc. Willie Dean and McDonald both dunked before Wright powered his way to the rim yet again for a slam to end the half 35-32.

Michael Wright - PGE TurowDeane stared the second half with a slam, and 2 free throws by Wright put Turow in the lead. Norris punched back with a three-pointer, but Robert Witka matched him from downtown, 38-39. Carroll and Dean traded four consecutive scores inside before Norris hit again from long range. Witka and Wright worked for buckets in close, but McDonald, their center, nailed a three-pointer. Wright stayed aggressive and rattled the rim with yet another dunk to grab the 1-point lead for Turow. Kickert bracketed a three by his teammate Fisher with two field goals to give Gran Canaria a 55-49 advantage. The two Gran Canaria players then hit back-to-back threes to push the lead out to 58-49. Wright dunked again for his 20th point on the night and added the free throw off the foul . Kickert, completely on fire, got another three to fall to send Gran Canaria into the final period up 61-52. Kickert kept rolling with a 2-plus-1 to open the fourth and give the home team a 12-point lead. Dean made a layup, and Witka dropped a three-pointer to pull Turow back into the game. Gray cut the lead to 66-60 with a triple. Wright scored 4 straight, 68-64, but Carroll dropped a three-pointer. Kickert gave Gran Canaria a 76-66 lead on a layup with over 3 minutes to play. Gran Canaria then turned up the defense, and Moran nailed a three to seal the win.

Head Coaches

MARTINEZ, PEDRO
Gran Canaria 2014
"I am happy because we played a quite serious game, playing well in offense. We had problems against their defense, which speculated a little, and that way you either break the game or it becomes more difficult. I think we showed good mentality in front of the adversities because things got bad in the third quarter but the truth is that many players contributed, especially Daniel Kickert. But more names like Will McDonald, Jim Moran or Jaycee Carroll also joined in to help the team solve the situation against a rival who played a good game."
TURKIEWICZ, PAWEL
PGE Turow
"Congratulations to Gran Canaria for the win. It was my first game after Sasa Obradovic leaving and we worked well. I think we played well against a good team, one of the most powerful in Spain. Our defense was good, we tried to stop Carroll but Kickert stepped up, he played a good game. Despite this loss, I think we were in the game all the time as we were only down by five in the second half. But we had some turnovers and that cost us the game."
