THE TAKE

Snaidero Udine comes off its first win hungry for another when it hosts winless Anwil Wloclawek on Tuesday night. Snaidero recorded its first win of the ULEB Cup season last week in its home debut against Besiktas Istanbul. Wloclawek is coming off a home defeat at the hands of Strasbourg. The two teams will meet for the first time in their history. Center Jacob Jaacks has been Udine's most impressive player so far, averaging 14.5 points and 12 rebounds with fantastic shooting numbers – 10-of-15 on two-pointers, 1-for1 beyond the arc and 6-of-7 from the foul line. Jaacks has teamed with captain Christian Di Giuliomaria to control the glass and allow Damon Williams (10 ppg.), Larry O'Bannon (12 ppg.) and Andrew Wisniewski (13 ppg., 4 apg.) to score in the open court. Anwil is searching for its first victory of this ULEB Cup campaign and its first-ever on the road in the competition. Anwil improved its shooting performances from the first to second games, but prefer anyway a slower-paced and lower-scoring grind-it-out type of game. Young Gatis Jahovics exploded last week for 18 points on 4-of-5 from downtown to go with 5 steals and 4 assists. Veteran point guard Andrej Pluta (17.5 ppg.) and New Zealnd's Mark Dickel are the decision-makers, while Brandon Kurtz (11 ppg., 4.5 rpg.) and Seid Hajric will fight under the boards. Anwil has the talent to surprise Udine if it continues to improve. Kurtz will need to avoid foul trouble and to keep Jaacks in check, but the biggest key could be the duel between Dickel and Wisniewski. Whichever guard inspires his teammates to raise their level will celebrate in the end.

Snaidero raised its record to 2-1, while Anwil remains winless and drops to last place at 0-3. Snaidero opened the second period with a 20-5 run to take the control of the game and the home squad never looked back. Anwil climbed within 65-59 late in the third quarter, but the hosts split the zone defense and used an 8-0 run to silence the Anwil comeback attempt. Anwil, which traveled to Italy without injured point guard Andrej Pluta and big man Brandon Kurtz, was outrebounded 38-25. Andrew Wisniewski led Snaidero with 17 points, Joel Zacchetti added 14, Larry O'Bannon 12 points and Damon Williams finished with 12 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists. Anwil's Seid Hajric led all scorers with 29 points and 8 rebounds, Gatis Jahovics produced 14 points and Zbigniew Bialek added 12.

Snaidero's O'Bannon opened the scoring from downtown after just a few seconds played. Williams converted an offensive rebound and Michele Antonutti added a mid-range jumper as the hosts built a 7-1 lead. Hajric got Anwil going, but Wisniewski's triple and Jacob Jaacks inside made it 13-5 after four minutes. Bialek added a three-point play for Anwil to stay on track, but Wisniewski beat the Anwil defense and drove the basket for an easy lay-up and a 17-8 advantage. Hairic grabbed another offensive board to score and push his team forward, but Wisniewski's triple gave the Italian side its first double-digit margin. Bialek hit a triple on the fastbreak to trim the gap and Mark Dickel scored a layup to reduce the margin to 21-17. Kristaps Valters and Dickel exchanged baskets to keepthe score at 23-19 at the end of the first quarter. Valters hit an eight-meter bomb early in the second quarter, but Dickel answered with a layup. Wisniewski hit a triple coming off a pick and easy points from SIlvio Gigena opened a 31-21 difference. Wisniewski remained on fire by scoring his fourth triple in 13 minutes to go up 34-22. Hajric scored again inside and a beautiful assist from Williams allowed Jaacks to score an easy basket for a 38-24 scoreline at the midway point of the quarter. Patrick Mutombo capped a 20-5 run from downtown for a 43-24 margin, Still Hajric and Dickel boosted Anwil and cut the difference to 45-32, before Zacchetti converted three attempts from the foul line to push Snaidero to a 53-35 halftime advantage.

Jahovics and Hajric forced Snaidero to call timeout after opening the third quarter with a 6-0 run to keep Anwil on track at 53-41. Wisniewski scored once more from beyond the arc for Udine, but Wiktor Grudzniksi cut the cushion to 58-48 with a triple of his own. O'Bannon hit a three a few seconds later as the hosts remained comfortably ahead, 61-50. Zacchetti boosted Snaidero under the glass, but Bialek put the visitors within 65-56. Bartlomiej Woloszyn pushed Anwil back in the game from long distance, 65-59, with three minutes left in the quarter, Zacchetti converted a three-point play as Anwil remained scoreless till the end of the quarter. Zacchetti scored a lefty lay-up for a 71-59 lead after 30 minutes. Jaacks raised the margin to 73-59 before Grudzinski closed a three-and-a-half minute scoreless stretch for Anwil with a left-handed hook. Williams scored a pair going to the rim and Di Giuliomaria blocked a Hajric shot and launched O'Bannon for a triple, giving Snaidero an 80-67 advantage. Hajric sounded the charge for his team, but Anwil couldn't score consistently against the zone. Williams boosted Udine to 82-69, but Jahovics helped cut the gap to 82-73 with two minutes left. Williams made an amazing dunk on the final buzzer to seal the deserved win of the hosts.

Head Coaches

PANCOTTO, CESARE
Snaidero Udine
"We played a match like last Saturday night against Biella. Very good in the first two quarters and after the halftime we faced a lot of difficulties. It's a not easy period for us and we need this victory because we haven't a lot of time for practicing."
DEDEK, DAVID
Anwil Wloclawek
“In the first half we played bad defense, but in the second half we played better. However, it was very difficult to win because we played without seven players, among which three from the starting five. Snaidero? It’s a good team, one of the favourites of Group B."

Players

WISNIEWSKI, ANDREW
Snaidero Udine
“It was very important to win for us after the defeat against Biella in the Italian championship. We played a good game with strength. We did a very good defense. We must always play this way."
JAHOVICS, GATIS
Anwil Wloclawek
"At the beginning we didn’t believe in the win and Snaidero took the advantage. In the second half, we played with energy, power and we were aggressive and we recovered the gap. But it wasn’t enough."
