THE TAKE

This is Unics's first visit to the Spanish capital since the 2007 ULEB Cup semifinals. Madrid will qualify to the Top 16 with a win. The hosts may be without Facu Campazzo, so Sergio Rodriguez and Sergio Llull will see even more playing time at the point guard position against two very experienced players in Curtis Jerrells and Nikos Zisis. Rudy Fernandez is back practicing and may return to action this week. If so, Fernandez and Jonas Maciulis must find the way to stop high-flying small forward James White. Jaycee Carroll will test his shooting skills against last season's top scorer Keith Langford. Former Madrid big man D'or Fischer returns to Barclaycard Center, leading a frontcourt that also features Kostas Kaimakoglou, Viktor Sanikidze and Dmitry Sokolov. Kaimakoglou and Sanikidze face a physical battle against Andres Nocioni and Felipe Reyes at power forward. Salah Mejri, Ioannis Bourousis and Gustavo Ayon must be ready to contribute against two top-class defensive centers in Fischer and Sokolov.

Quotes Head Coaches

LASO, PABLO
Real Madrid
"The first time we met it was a game thet Unics likes, with low scoring. They are a team that controls the rhythm of the game and with great one on one players like Langford, Jerrells, Zisis, Kaimakoglou or Fischer. When you let them run they feel coomfortable. We must improve that from the first game. Their statis offense is always controlled, always looking for the best option and it will make us adjust in defense. They changed coaches in the last week and we have already seen new things with Pashutin. It will be important to start focused and try to impose our pace to take a win that would put us in the Top 16. We must try defensive variants. Unics looks for the switches to use the one on one, and that is an effort that all my players must make. Unics feels comfortable against a 'normal' defense, they know how to read it because they have quality and it's important for us to change that rhythm. We did it in the first game and I think it worked for us. Our defense against their static offense was good, but when they ran, we suffered."
PASHUTIN, EVGENY
Unics Kazan
"Real Madrid is a strong team. They have got a strong and well-balanced roster with a good number of top level guards and forwards. The team keeps to traditional Spanish style of basketball with a number of fastbreaks. Madrid plays aggressive defense and pressures the player possessing the ball. Our task is to reduce the fastbreaks number and make the opponents shift to positional basketball. We will keep an eye on the long distance shooters since Madrid both shoots well out of the arc and easily goes inside. We shall do our best not give the room for the opponents to score easy balls. Our task is to proceed bringing to life the idea of defensive play which we have started. We will have to find a way to force the opponents to make mistakes. We will be looking for the weak sides of Madrid and try to make the best use of them. We will be doing our best to have our offense well-done and balanced, and we should definitely take care of the ball and shoot well from the most favorable positions."

Players

NOCIONI, ANDRES
Real Madrid
"We have the chance to reah our first goal, the Top 16, and that's important. This team has big challenges but we must go step by step. Unics is a complicated team and hard to defend. They have many inidividual options and they play different to most of the teams. It's hard to defend a team with individuals who can solve almost any situation. We must worry about our thing, try to be strong at home, try to add a new win and be on our way in the regular season. We are adjusting to each other week by week. We have a capable team which features a different player that stands out every night to solve the game. That is good. We must improve in many aspects still, but that is normal. I would like to play better sometimes and deliver what is expected from Real Madrid, but what we have to do now is become a better team. Team work is important and while we stay united and compact, it will be hard for opponents to surprise us."
WHITE, JAMES
Unics Kazan
"It will be a big game in Madrid! Our opponents are strong, and they play at home. It will be very important for us to play well there and rach a good result in this match-up, and we will definitely play to win."
