THE TAKE

Defense meets offense when Montepaschi hosts Olympiacos Piraeus on Wednesday in a pivotal Group A clash in Siena, Italy. Both teams enter the game tied with Tau Ceramica for second place in the group with 4-2 records – one victory behind leader CSKA Moscow. The Italian champion is undefeated at home this season and leads the Euroleague in scoring defense, allowing only 65.7 points per game – and that number drops to 61.7 points in home games. Meanwhile Olympiacos leads the league with 92.5 points scored per game and boasts the league's top scorer and month of November MVP, Arvydas Macijauskas. Montepaschi has won its last two games, including a 59-84 thrashing of Prokom Trefl last week in Poland in which Rimas Kaukenas led a well-balanced scoring effort with 14 points and big man Ksistof Lavrinovic padded his league-lead in blocked shots with 4. Those two along with dynamic point guard Terrell McIntyre have formed the basis of the Montepaschi attack, with blue collar guys like Ben Eze and Shaun Stonerook getting the job done inside and veterans Vlado Ilievski and Bootsy Thornton providing experience on the perimeter. Meanwhile Olympiacos topped Zalgiris last week 90-74 as Macijauskas posted a season-high 32. The Lithuanian scorer teams with big man Marc Jackson, who is also among the league's top 10 scorers, to form a solid scoring tandem, though the third piece of that puzzle, point guard Lynn Greer, is out after re-injuring his leg. Accordingly, Rod Blakney will likely start at point guard with Milos Teodosic playing an increased role of the bench. Forwards Qyntel Woods and Georgios Printezis and rebounding ace Ioannis Bourousis are also key parts of the Olympiacos lineup. Two key matchups in this game will see Siena's defensive ace Romain Sato try his luck on Macijauskas, while Lavrinovic and Eze trade off on Jackson as the hosts seek to keep the Reds' scorers in place. Meanwhile Olympiacos will need another solid outing from Blakney, who is expected to start for the first time on the road this season. Not only is the game is a crucial one for both teams who could be jockeying for position in the Group A table for the next two months, but the point-differential at the end could also play a role in any potential tiebreakers down the road. And regardless of which team wins the battle of tempo – with Olympiacos looking to run and Montepaschi looking to slow things down at times – there is every reason to expect that this game will come down to the wire and could be one of the most exciting of the season.

Quotes Head Coaches

PIANIGIANI, SIMONE
Montepaschi Siena
"Ther's no doubt that Olimpiacos is one of the strongest team in Europe, made to reach the Final Four. They are awsome in offense, averaging 99 points in the four games won. On paper, Olimpiacos is stronger than us, but we play at home and this will be a factor. We have to pay attention to their fastbreak becouse they like to play very fast. It will be a great game, but it won't be a key game for our Euroleague season. So it's important to be focused and not nervous."
GERSHON, PINI
Olympiacos
"Unfortunately, the problems have not abandoned the team yet. Lynn Greer is not coming with us, while I don't know if Panagiotis Vasilopoulos is able to help us in Italy. All these facts don't mean anything. We are going to Siena to win the game knowing how tough this battle is. Montepaschi has one of the toughest home courts in Europe. They are unbeaten in the Italian League and their presence in the Euroleague games has been excellent so far, even in the games that they lost."

EZE, BENJAMIN
Montepaschi Siena
"We won a great Italian League game in Pesaro. And now we have to face a very intense week: first Olimpiacos and then Rome in the Italian championship. They are strong teams but we have shown ourselves to be at the same level. Olimpiacos is a full, talented team, with the best offensive player in the Euroleague. I'm excited to play a game like this one, because to win something you have to beat the strongest opponents."
VASILEIADIS, KOSTAS
Olympiacos
"Montepaschi is a very good team and they have proved it in the Italian League, where they have only victories, and also in the Euroleague. They have played together for many years and every summer they make small additions, which I think is the secret; their homogeneity. We have to be very concentrated and establish our rhythm to win this game. Without dispute, we are an offensive team, but we have to work on our defense, because Siena has great talent and they compete at home. It means that our opponents have familiarized themselves with the baskets. So, the secret for us is to stop their weapons."
Romain Sato - Montepaschi Siena Terrell McIntyre came up with a key steal, basket and assist in the final minute to lead Montepaschi Siena back from a 7-point fourth quarter deficit to an 86-84 win over Olympiacos Piraeus on Wednesday in Italy. With the win, the Italian champs improved to 5-2 at the midway point in the regular season and remain one win behind group leader CSKA. Meanwhile Olympiacos dropped to 4-3 in the standings. The game was close throughout, with neither team ever building a significant lead. Montepaschi led by 1 after 10 minutes, by 2 at halftime and Olympiacos led by 3 after three periods. The Reds grabbed the momentum in the fourth quarter and led 64-71, but key three-pointers from Rimantas Kaukenas, Bootsy Thornton and Romain Sato kept the hosts close. McIntyre came up with a clutch steal that led to the go ahead free throws by Shaun Stonerook. Another steal by Ben Eze for a McIntyre basket sunk Olympiacos, which couldn't answer with a big shot when it needed it most. Sato led Montepaschi with a season-high 23 points and 8 rebounds, Thornton had 17 of 4-of-5 three-point shooting, Ksistof Lavrinovic added 11, Kaukenas 10, Stonerook posted 10 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals and McIntyre finished with 9 points and 7 assists. Marc Jackson led Olympiacos with 21 points and 8 rebounds, Qyntel Woods had 20 points, 12 rebounds and 4 steals, Georgios Printezis added a career-best 17 and Arvydas Macijauskas, who entered the night as the league's top scorer, finished with a season-low 13.

Montepaschi won the opening tip and McIntyre got the hosts going with a triple followed by a steal and a basket thanks to a goal-tending call. The Italian champ's defense frustrated the Reds in the early going, as it took Olympiacos more than three minutes before Macijauskas finally got his team on the board with a pair of free throws. Ioannis Bourousis turned an offensive rebound into a three-point play and Woods took a steal in for an uncontested slam as Olympiacos got right back in the game, 8-7. McIntyre's mid-range jumper put the hosts up 5 and after Jackson's move in the paint for Olympiacos, McIntyre set Sato up for a three-point play and a 15-9 Montepaschi advantage. Woods and Stonerook traded hits from downtown before Jackson scored a three-point play of his own. Milos Teodosic made it a 1-point game as the period ended with Montepaschi up 20-19.

Qyntel Woods - OlympiacosJackson's efforts on the offensive glass allowed him to tie the game and then give Olympiacos its first lead with free throws. Montepaschi's crisp ball movement helped the team find open shots, but they weren't falling, while on the other end, Woods drained a three that capped a 0-7 run. Kaukenas came back with a three of his own, but Jackson drew a foul from Lavrinovic and converted the free throws to keep the Reds on top. It didn't last long as Thornton rifled one in from beyond the arc and Kaukenas scored on the fast break. Woods grabbed an offensive rebounds and threw down a slam to tie the score at 28-28. The lead switched sides as Jackson added another second chance bucket for the visitors and Vlado Ilievski drilled a triple for the hosts. Jackson tied the game at 39-39 from the line. Lavrinovic had the last word with a basket to give the hosts a 41-39 halftime lead.

Woods and Sato traded baskets at the start of the second half and after Printezis tied it, Sato hit a triple. Woods and Macijauskas led a 0-8 surge that put Olympiacos ahead despite Sato's best efforts. A Woods slam and Teodosic fast-break layup made it 48-55. Sato scored on the offensive glass and Stonerook followed with a three from the top of the key to bring Montepaschi back. Thornton then fired one in from downtown to cap an 8-0 charge and put the hosts back on top. However Printezis and Woods responded with back-to-back triples. Lavrinovic continued the long-range show with his own triple and Thornton tied it at 60-60 from the line. Teodosic was fouled as he tried a three and made the resulting free throws to gibe the visitors a 60-63 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Bootsy Thorton - Montepaschi SienaPrintezis put the Reds up 5 with a bank shot at the start of the fourth quarter, but free throws by Thornton and an acrobatic basket by Lavrinovic brought Montepaschi within 2. Stonerook swatted a Macijauskas try leading to a 24-second violation, but the hosts missed their opportunity to tie the game and soon Olympiacos used a Jackson basket and a Printezis three to build a 64-71 advantage. Kaukenas responded with a triple and Stonerook got the fans charged up with an offensive rebound and a two-handed slam. Jackson answered with a hook shot, but Thornton bettered him with a triple to make it 72-73. Olympiacos pulled away again on Jackson free throws, while Montepaschi suffered a blow when Kaukenas fouled out with over four minutes remaining. Printezis threw in a wild runner that made it 72-77, but a clutch Sato triple with 2:30 remaining revved up the hosts. Macijauskas stepped up from the line, but Thornton got Montepaschi back within 1 with another big three. On the next play, McIntyre stripped Teodosic, leading to 2 Stonerook free throws and Montepaschi's first lead of the fourth quarter, 80-79. Ben Eze stepped up with another key steal that turned into a McIntyre basket with 50 seconds remaining. Teodosic tried a three and missed, but the rebound stayed with the Reds and Macijauskas drew a foul. He made it 82-81 from the line with 35 seconds to go. McIntyre fed Sato for a wide-open bucket underneath. Woods missed on the next try and Sato sealed the win from the line.

Head Coaches

PIANIGIANI, SIMONE
Montepaschi Siena
"It turned out to be a great game, one in which the defenses have shined more than the offenses. Tactics marked the rhythm of the game. We tried to fight point for point with a great opponent. The constant defensive changes by Olympiacos hurt our offensive flow. On our side, we achieved our goal of keeping Olympiacos below its normal offensive numbers. We were able to play strong, even though their big men are stronger than ours. The proof is that we pulled the same number of offensive rebounds, 15, which are a lot for us. We got to the end very even, either team could have won, but our concentration helped us get two key steals that catapulted us to the victory."
GERSHON, PINI
Olympiacos
"It was a good game for both sides and the evaluations show that. Unfortunately we made two errors in the end, but some of my players are still not accustomed to playing at the end of big games. However we played a good game and above all we can still improve. My compliments to Siena."

Players

STONEROOK, SHAUN
Montepaschi Siena
"It was a very difficult game against a great team in a tough group that also features CSKA or Tau. We managed to get this home win and that is the bigges thing, as we had to battle for 40 minutes tonight. Every game in this group is difficult, so beating Olympiacos at home was great. We know we are not a very big team, but rebounded a lot and made up for that. Fortunately, we made some shots, got a couple of good rebound and being an undersized team in the Euroleague, we must fight and give everything we can. It was difficult, but we got it done. Like I said, every game in this group is very difficult and we must play this hard or even harder against each team in this group."
