THE TAKE

Cibona will look to pull off a big upset at home when it faces undefeated Regal FC Barcelona in a Group A clash on Thursday at the Drazen Petrovic Basketball Center in Zagreb, Croatia. Cibona is coming off back-to-back road losses that dropped its record to 1-5, but with three of its remaining four games at home, it’s Top 16 dream still has legs. However the clash with Barcelona presents a major problem. Cibona enters the contest as the lowest-scoring team in the Euroleague at 59.3 points per game. And it will face the best defense around, with Barca best in the Euroleague in allowing just 61.7 points per game. Those numbers alone prove that Cibona will need a special effort to outscore Barcelona. But in an arena named for the great Drazen Petrovic, super scoring nights are always a possibility. Cibona’s most effective players this season have been leading scorer Marko Tomas, point guard Jamont Gordon and center Luksa Andric and they will each feature in tough matchups. The big question at point guard will be if Barca’s young stud Ricky Rubio is fit for the game after suffering an injury in the Spanish League. If he’s out, the job of stopping Gordon will be split between Victor Sada and Jaka Lakovic. Tomas will pitt his scoring skills against one of the game’s premier scorers, reigning Euroleageu MVP Juan Carlos Navarro. Andric anchors the frontline, but will need help from young Tomislav Zubcic and veteran Dalibor Bagaric, who could return from injury, as well as power forward Vedran Vukusic to handle the Barcelona foursome of Fran Vasquez, Terrence Morris, Boni NDong and Erazem Lorbek. Cibona’s fifth starter could be Marin Rozic, who has the unenviable task of facing small forward Pete Mickeal, who was named November MVP and is in the midst of a career season. Navarro scored 20 and Morris 15 to lead Barcelona to an 81-59 win when these teams met in Week 2. The key to Cibona reversing its fortunes starts with improving on a league-worst 21.4% three-point shooting, which is particularly damaging considering that only four teams shoot more from downtown that Cibona. For the visitors, size and depth are major advantages and if Barcelona is able to score in the paint and control the glass, it should control the game.

Quotes Head Coaches

PERASOVIC, VELIMIR
Cibona
"Two months have passed since our game against Barcelona and I think that today we are much better team then we used to be back then. The best, or at least one of the best teams in Europe is arriving and there is no need to explain what that means for our players. They already had an excellent team last year, but during the summer they brought five more outstanding players and now they are on the highest level in the last decade. I have already said in many occasions that I am not entering any game with a thought of losing, so this will also not happen tomorrow."
PASCUAL, XAVIER
Regal FC Barcelona
"Barcelona always wants to win and play well. We have to be able to play even better because we have the responsibility to our fans, as a club, to win playing well. But this game against Cibona in Zagreb will be more difficult than it may seem, because they are a team that has kept improving since the start of the season. Also, for them, it is a key game to try to make the Top 16. Fortunately for us, Ricky could travel with the team because he has overcome the problems he had these last few days. He is practicing with the team normally and will be ready to play in Croatia."

Cibona
"We are really excited to have the opportunity to play against such a great team as Barcelona. For many of us young players this will be opportunity to show what we can do and how much we are worth. I hope that we will stay in the game for as long as possible, and with the help of our fans we can make a huge surprise on Thursday."
RUBIO, RICKY
Regal FC Barcelona
"Despite having advanced to the Top 16 already, the team has to maintain its ambition to the maximum, We know we are in the Top 16 but we are travelling to Zagreb to beat Cibona so that we can stay at the top of the standings for a better-looking Top 16 for us."
Fran Vazquez - Regal FC BarcelonaRegal FC Barcelona stayed as the only undefeated team in the 2009-10 Euroleague season by downing Cibona 66-80 in Zagreb, Croatia in Group A on Thursday. Barcelona improved to 7-0 and at the very worst, will become the Group A champion if it wins its last two home games against Zalgiris and Montepaschi Siena. Meanwhile, Cibona dropped to 1-6 and will run out of chances to reach the Top 16 if it loses at home against Fenerbahce Ulker next week. Juan Carlos Navarro led the winners with 20 points. Fran Vazquez added 19 and 8 rebounds while Terence Morris barely missed a double-double with 11 points and 9 boards for Barcelona. Jamont Gordon led Cibona with 19 points. Leon Radosevic added 10 for the hosts. Vazquez and Morris shined in the first quarter and a three-pointer by Jaka Lakovic gave Barcelona a 19-26 lead after 10 minutes. Bojan Bogdanovic sank back-to-back triples but Navarro took over with 14 points in the second quarter to boost the guests' margin to 34-45 at halftime. Vedran Vukusic and Gordon brought Cibona within 49-55 midway through the third quarter but Navarro and Boni Ndong made it a 12-point gane, 53-65, after 30 minutes. Roger Grimau and Vazquez helped Barcelona to seal the outcome long before the final buzzer.

Cibona tried to open the floor with a starting lineup that featured big men Luksa Andric and Vukusic playing on the perimeter and powering the offensive board. Marin Rozic got the hosts going with a mid-range jumper but Vazquez followed a wild alleyoop dunk with a mid-range shot for a 2-4 Barcelona lead. Andric stepped up with a tip-in and Gordon added a reverse layup but Morris sank a corner triple to put the guests back ahead, 6-7. Vazquez stayed on fire with a five-meter jumper and an unbelievable dunk-and-foul, good for a 8-12 score. Vukusic tried to change things with a tip-in that Morris erased with free throws. Gordon took over with a three-point play, as Cibona stick to its game plan, opening the floor for one-on-one opportunities. Erazem Lorbek hit free throws and improved with a triple for a 13-19 Barcelona lead. Victor Sada shined with a driving layup but Gordon and Radosevic kept the hosts within 17-21. Tomas scored in transition but free throws by Ndong and a three-pointer by Lakovic gave Barcelona some fresh air, 19-26, after 10 minutes.

Bogdanovic struck from downtown early in the second quarter and soon added a seven-meter bomb to bring Cibona as close as 25-26. Jordi Trias scored in transition, as Barcelona used Lakovic as off-guard together with Sada and Gianluca Basile - back in action for the first time since October. A technical foul on coach Velimir Perasovic allowed Navarro to follow free throws with a wide open three-pointer, capping a 0-7 Barcelona run. Vedran Princ took over with a driving layup and Dalibor Bagaric set the crowd on fire with a reverse dunk but Navarro bettered that with back-to-back triples to make it a double-digit game, 29-39. Gordon and Andric returned to the floor off a Cibona timeout and the hosts adjusted their defense. Andric hit free throws, as Barcelona tried to slow down its offense to find better shooting options. Navarro downed his fourth triple off a timeout and free throws by Ndong and Morris made it a 13-point game, 32-45. Gordon provided a highlight with a driving dunk to get Cibona within 34-45 at halftime.

Jamont Gordon - CibonaGordon kept pacing Cibona with a big three-pointer immediately after the break. Vazquez answered with a layup in transition and soon added a dunk to keep the guests out of trouble at 37-49. Vukusic grabbed a loose ball to put it in and a put-back layup by Radosevic gave Cibona some hope at 41-49. Radosevic fed Gordon for an uncontested layup but the guests did not panic and improved their defense. Vazquez hit free throws and soon added a dunk off an inbound pass to restore a 43-53 Barcelona lead. Vukusic buried a three-pointer but Barcelona had improved its ball circulation, finding good options early in each possession. Navarro hit free throws but an unstoppable Vukusic answered from downtown to get the crowd involved at 49-55. Lorbek and Navarro sank free throws, as Cibona called timeout to avoid loose ball fouls. Navarro fed Ndong for a baseline jumper that Princ bettered with a triple. Another jumper by Ndong and a fast break layup by Navarro fixed the score at 53-65 after 30 minutes.

Cibona needed a quick comeback to keep its options alive but Barcelona kept following its game plan, locking the defensive board and not being in a hurry to look for good shots in offense. Lorbek scored in the low post, as Cibona had started to miss free throw attempts at the worst possible time. A fallaway jumper by Grimau gave Barcelona a 15-point lead, 54-69. Gordon tried to ignite Cibona's comeback with a three-pointer and Radosevic scored down low for a 59-69 deficit. Grimau silenced the crowd with an off-balance jumper - and free throw that came with it. Free throws by Ricky Rubio allowed Barcelona to seal the outcome, 59-74, with over 4 minutes left. Cibona kept trying, however, but Barcelona dominated the game with its deeper rotation and athleticism. Vazquez scored again and Cibona only rallied in the final minutes, when Barcelona had already cruised to a well-deserved, convincing road win.

Head Coaches

PERASOVIC, VELIMIR
Cibona
"It was evident that we entered the game with a lot of tension and nerves that led us into mistakes. We had will and enthusiasm, but we lacked precision on our shooting. Barcelona punishes every mistake you make. They are an outstanding offensive team, as well as defensive. It is hard to score against them, and it is depressing how quickly they can score on you. We came to a 6-point deficit several times, but they would punish us every time. We must win two more games to reach the Top 16. Either beat Fenerbahce at home, or Zalgiris away, and then Asvel in the last game at home. I think we can do it. If we don't, we don't deserve to go through."
PASCUAL, XAVIER
Regal FC Barcelona
"We have played a very good and did our best to win it. Cibona played pretty good, especially on defense. They played with enthusiasm and were very aggressive on both the offensive and defensive sides, and we had some problems playing one against one, especially in the first quarter. In the third quarter, we looked like we could build an advantage, but we did not do it and Cibona cut our lead and we had to fight for the win until the last second."

Players

GORDON, JAMONT
Cibona
"We wanted to come out and not give up. We knew they are the number one team in Europe right now, and we wanted to be aggressive against them to give ourselves a chance. But they are a good team. We made some tough shots, but they came back and made some tough shots. They are a tough team to guard. We are not happy with the result, but we did play hard and we did play good. We are playing pretty good right now, and I think we have a great chance to make the Top 16. How we played tonight is how we are going to play every game and give ourselves a chance. We can beat anybody if we play like tonight."
LORBEK, ERAZEM
Regal FC Barcelona
"I think we played better on offense tonight and that is the reason why we won the game. Cibona played good, but we hit lot of three-pointers and it was hard to defend us. We have a super team, and we will play every game to win. We have an advantage in front of Montepaschi Siena, but we do not want to calculate. We want to win every game."
NAVARRO, JUAN CARLOS
Regal FC Barcelona
"It was a more difficult win than it looks. Cibona fought a lot, but we are still undefeated in the Euroleague and that is very important. We needed our best game to win tonight because Cibona plays especially tough at home in Zagreb."
