THE TAKE

A direct fight for first place in Top 16 Group E will take place in Vitoria, Spain, where Tau Ceramica hosts Armani Jeans Milano on Wednesday. Tau needs to bounce back from its road loss against Olympiacos, while Group E leader AJ Milano looks to keep beating the expectations after back-to-back wins against the Reds and Asseco Prokom. Tau faces severe injury problems, as All-Euroleague center Tiago Splitter is not expected to play against Milano. With Splitter sidelined, aggressive big man Will McDonald and three-point threat Mirza Teletovic will need to lead the hosts' frontcourt along with center Stanko Barac. At power forward, Teletovic will test his shooting skills against Mike Hall. Milano may have an advantage inside, as it counts on outstanding rebounders like Pape Sow, Mason Rocca and Mindaugas Katelynas. Meanwhile, Maurice Taylor remains questionable for this game, in which he may make his Euroleague debut. The guests' main concern will be stopping Igor Rakocevic, the Euroleague's top scorer, who just became the competition's January MVP. Rakocevic looks to provide his all-around scoring skills, alongside as small forward Pete Mickeal, his perfect complement on court. Experienced swingman Sergi Vidal and small forward Fernando San Emeterio will be ready to help Tau in many ways off the bench. AJ Milano faces injury problems, as Jobey Thomas may miss the game in Vitoria. Since Marco Mordente remains out for at least one more week, expect up-and-coming guard Luca Vitali and do-it-all swingman David Hawkins to see most minutes at both wings against Rakocevic and Mickeal. The point guard battle will be interesting, especially since Hollis Price joined AJ Milano and had 19 points in his team's road win against Prokom last week. Price will be backed up by Yohann Sangare and Massimo Bulleri, but due to the lack of options, Milano may play with twin point guards during the game. Price is ready for a big matchup against Pablo Prigioni. Meanwhile, Sangare will match off the bench against Vlado Ilievski. Milano needs to power the offensive boards with Rocca and Sow, as well as involving Vitali and Hawkins in the offense to maximize its chances. Meanwhile, Tau relies on Rakocevic and Mickeal as it hunts for a key home win, as well as trusting Prigioni in his critical matchup against Price. Tau is the favorite at Fernando Buesa Arena, where it has won 14 of its last 15 Euroleague games, but head coach Dusko Ivanovic’s men must be ready, otherwise they could fall victims to a red-hot Milano, which has now won five in a row and seven of its last eight.

Quotes Head Coaches

IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Tau Ceramica
"Our first target must be winning tomorrow, no matter the point difference. I’m sure our fans will support and help us in that task. Milano comes here after winning the first two games and that confidence will make them a stronger contender, but we must know how to deal with the pressure We will need to play our best basketball, being confident and calm. Armani Jeans has showed that they are a quality team, they play hard all the time. They play fine in transition and like to run the court as fast as possible without getting impatient when they need to play slower. Hawkins and Price are very important for them, but we shouldn’t forget Vitali and their power forwards, who can play in the perimeter and open big spaces for the others. They do a great job."
BUCCHI, PIERO
AJ Milano
“After our great win over Caserta in the Italian League, with a great defensive effort as a team, we're going to play in a very difficult arena like Vitoria's, where the strong team of Tau, built to conquer a spot in the Final Four, awaits us. After our first two wins in the Top 16, we are very focused to play this game. We know that only a few teams have won at the Fernando Buesa Arena in the last few years, like Rome did in the regular season, but we really want to try it by fighiting all game long with the right mentality, the same as we have shown in more than one game this season in the Euroleague, and which carried us here, playing in the Top 16 for the playoffs. The intensity, concentration and great defense we showed versus Caserta will be the same weapons we’ll have to use to beat Tau."

"It's going to be a great battle. I expect that Armani Jeans Milano will come to Vitoria to do its best. They are the current leader of the group and they know they face a great challenge in Vitoria. If they are able to win here, they will take a giant step towards qualifying for the playoffs. We must do a great job to be able to win and especially, stay calm because we cannot expect to win the game in only a few minutes. We know that it will be a long game, a typical Top 16 battle, and it will be tough."
PRICE, HOLLIS
AJ Milano
"Every game is difficult, and this is not rhetorical. We won our first two games by 2 points, and it shows that. In Vitoria, we'll find a very strong team, which played several times the Final Four and lost just two games this season in Euroleague, but I think we are tough enough, both physically and mentally, to go for the victory even in their arena. We have nothing to lose, especially because we play away, so we can play relaxed and focused on things we have to do. We know that a victory should be a great step forward to the playoffs, and we really want to try it."
Sergi Vidal - Tau CeramicaTau Ceramica ended Armani Jeans Milano's fairytale start to the Top 16 with a resounding 108-90 victory at the Fernando Buesa Arena. The result ended Milano’s five-game winning streak and leaves the two teams in the thick of a three-way tie with Olympiacos for first place in Group E at 2-1. Milano hosts Tau in two weeks in the teams’ next game. The visitors kept it close for most of the first half before Tau heated up to take a 55-46 halftime lead. A 14-2 third-period charge increased Tau’s lead to 20+ points as the hosts cruised the rest of the way to victory. Sergi Vidal matched his career high in the first half with 20 points and set it with 6 more in the second half. He finished 6 for 7 on three-pointers. Mirza Teletovic added 19 points, league-leading scorer Igor Rakocevic had 17 and 5 assists, Will McDonald and Pete Mickeal scored 14 each and Pablo Prigioni produced 8 points and 7 assists. Overall, Tau shot 13 for 24 from downtown. Pape Sow paced Armani Jeans with a career-high 25 points, Jobey Thomas added 18, David Hawkins 14 and Luca Vitali 12.

Pape Sow - Armani Jeans MilanoSix points in a row by Sow boosted Armani Jeans Milano in the early going, enough for a short 4-6 visitor lead after two minutes. Tau struggled at the beginning, unable to set the right pace in offense. Milano took advantage of that thanks to a great ball circulation, nice shooting and very intense man-to-man defense. Both teams showed a great intensity in the beginning, and that resulted in a double technical foul called on head coaches Dusko Ivanovic and Piero Bucchi only two minutes after the tip-off. A couple of three pointers by Teletovic and Rakocevic awaked Tau for a while, 11-8, but Armani Jeans answered quickly with Vitali and Thomas to regain a slim edge, 15-18, after 7 minutes. The hosts focused on the perimeter in offense, looking at the wings for three-point shooting. On the other side, the visitors played Vitali in the low post taking advantage of his size to create for his team. Maurice Taylor, in his Euroleague debut, was the one who read the situation best, providing inside points to help Armani retain a short lead, 26-27, at the end of the first quarter.

Tau looked uncomfortable and unable to take control of the game, as Armani Jeans prevented the hosts from feeding their frontcourt. Although the score was balanced, Milano seemed much more effective and calm. A three pointer by Vitali confirmed that feeling raising the visitors’ advantage to 34-37, as Tau only added points after playing risky one-on-one situations. Things seemed to improve for the hosts right after that, as Armani Jeans paid for its great defensive activity with too many fouls that allowed the home team to take a little breath. Rakocevic and Mickeal brought Tau back, as Stanko Barac became big in the zone and prevented visitors from having an easy game inside the paint. Armani Jeans couldn’t stop that sudden turnaround while Tau, led by a pair of threes by Sergi Vidal and free throws by Mickeal and Rakocevic, managed to build a 10-point margin, 50-40, with only two minutes to halftime. Although Sow and Mindaugas Katelynas took over for Milano, it wasn’t enough to stop Tau’s scoring machinery as Rakocevic closed the half with a basket-plus-foul play to make it 55-46.

Igor Rakocevic, January MVP - Tau CeramicaThe game turned into a run-and-gun show after the break. Tau continued the trend it started in the last minutes of the second quarter and showed all its offensive power. Mickeal, Teletovic and Rakocevic gave Tau a 14-point lead, but Armani Jeans didn’t surrender and accepted the scoring challenge. Vitali answered with a three and Hawkins capped a great steal with a monster one-handed fast-break dunk that made it a 9-point game midway through the third period. But the visitors’ reaction ended as quickly as it started because Tau found Prigioni and McDonald for a 7-0 run that extended the lead to 16 points. Things got even worse for Armani Jeans after Mike Hall was called for an unsportsmanlike foul that resulted in 5 points in a row by Teletovic for a 78-59 edge, a big punishment that almost terminated Armani Jeans. Milano looked dizzy at that point, as it lost all balance and tried individual solutions with Hawkins and Taylor, opening the doors for Tau’s wild offense. Another three by Teletovic and a free throw by Thomas closed the quarter with the result in no doubt, as the hosts led 86-63.

The break helped Armani Jeans to get back on track and to remember the fact that the point-difference could become an important factor for the future. Hawkins came up big and punished Tau with 6 points in a row, followed by a short jumper by Thomas to reduce the margin to 86-71 as Tau remained scoreless for almost three minutes. Mickeal was the first one to notice that game wasn’t over yet as he scored 4 points in a row that seemed to awake his teammates and end the drought. The visitors decided to use a zone defense for the last five minutes as a last attempt to come back, but it only worked in the beginning, as Vidal scored a corner three and Barac added a hook shot to extend the gap again to 19 points with less than three minutes to go. Battling only for the point-difference, both teams started a shooting contest that served for nothing but to exchange three-pointers with no clear winner. The difference remained steady as Price and Prigioni answered each other from the perimeter to finish the game with a clear 108-90 home win.

Head Coaches

IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Tau Ceramica
"The game showed all the things we expected from them. They are a tough contender, can play great basketball and we allowed them to play their game for too long. We did not play well on defense, too many points allowed despite the fact that we knew how they were going to play. We are getting too many wins without playing a good defense and that worries me a lot. We improved later, but that can be a big problem in our next games. We need to improve our defense. Of course Tiago’s comeback will help us, but he will need time to get back in shape, so it’s a problem that must be solved by the players that have to replace him now. We don’t think of anyone that cannot be on court. The point-difference we got is a good thing for us, we tried to make it as big as we could."
BUCCHI, PIERO
AJ Milano
"I want to congratulate Tau because they played a great game. They exploited our mistakes and were able to break us in the second period. They showed why they are in such a good streak lately in all competitions. Our problems started when we ran out of energy in our perimeter defense, we missed players like Mordente, who is still injured, and Hawkins, who entered into foul trouble too early. When we played less intense we found a big problem against their guards. I’m happy with Taylor’s debut. He is still out of shape, but he did a good job when he was on the court. He has talent and I think he will be able to help us a lot."

Players

VIDAL, SERGI
Tau Ceramica
"The most important thing tonight is that we won. We managed to take a huge margin, but that was only a secondary target. We achieved both, so it is great news and we are pretty happy for that. Sometimes we have a bad beginning and a great end like we did today, but sometimes it is the opposite. We must try to avoid those ups and downs and play at the same level all the game long. Today we reacted on time and that’s the most important outcome. It’s still early to know if this huge margin will help us or not, at this point we only have to think about winning next game."
VITALI, LUCA
AJ Milano
"They played a great game tonight, so I cannot do anything but congratulate them for it. They scored 108 points, which is too much for us and for anyone who wants to win here. It’s the first time we allowed so many points this season. I think we did not do the things we should have done in defense, we started well, but as long as the game went on, we lost intensity. We were okay for the 80% of the time, but we committed some mistakes and they punished us a lot when they turned the ball to the weak side for the three-pointer or when they found an inside player to score easy points. We must fix that to be able to beat them in Milano next time."
