THE TAKE

A decisive clash for one of the last remaining spots in the Quarterfinal Playoffs will highlight the Top 16 Week 6 slate with Lietuvos Rytas hosting Caja Laboral in the Game of the Week from Siemens Arena in the Lithuanian capital. The two teams enter the game with identical 3-2 records and the ability to both win the group or finish third and miss the playoffs. The final standings will be directly impacted by the outcome of Thursday’s other Group E clash between Unicaja and Panathinaikos, the latter also with a 3-2 mark and in the thick of the fight for a playoff berth. Caja Laboral will be Group E champ if it beats Rytas. Laboral will be second if it loses and Unicaja beats Panathinaikos. Laboral is out if it loses and Panathinaikos wins. Rytas advances if it beats Laboral and will win the group if it wins and Unicaja beats Panathinaikos. Rytas is out if it loses. The two teams met in a memorable contest in January that the Lithuanian champs won on a Khalid El-Amin triple at the buzzer. Laboral also enjoyed stellar point guard play that night from Marcelinho Huertas. Head coach Dusko Ivanovic will look to his point guard to lead the way again, especially with the Laboral frontline in pieces. Star power forward Mirza Teletovic is not expected to play due to a knee injury and big man Pape Sow is a question mark due to illness. If both are ultimately unable to play, Laboral will be extremely shorthanded at power forward, needing to choose between playing centers Stanko Barac and Esteban Batista simultaneously or playing small forward Fernando San Emeterio at the “four” spot. Rytas will try to capitalize through its big and powerful frontline that boasts rising star Jonas Valanciunas and Cemal Nalga at center and Milko Bjelica and Kenan Bajramovic at power forward. At guard, focus will be the second duel between co-Top 16 Week2 MVPs Marcelinho and El-Amin. Rytas also features D.J. Strawberry as a backup playmaker as well as Martynas Gecevicius, Brad Newley and Simas Jasaitis as high-powered offensive options on the wings. Laboral leans on David Logan and Pau Ribas as other options in the backcourt plus Brad Oleson at shooting guard. Of course injuries could force Laboral into a smaller, three-guard lineup. This game promises fireworks with two teams backed into corners ready to give everything for the win. With the talent on their rosters, importance of the game and atmosphere supplied by the Vilnius faithful, this must-win Game of the Week could be one for the history books.

Game notes, Lietuvos Rytas

Martynas Gecevicius has made at least one three-pointer in 15 straight Euroleague games.

Head coach Aleksandar Trifunovic has used 12 different players in his starting lineup this season. Milko Bjelica is the only L. Rytas player to take part in all 13 Euroleague games this season.

Teenage big man Jonas Valanciunas has made 16 consecutive free throws in Euroleague action.

Simas Jasaitis spent the 2007-08 season playing for Caja Laboral. He helped the team with the Spanish League title that season. Mirza Teletovic and reserve guard Ander Garcia are the only players on the current Laboral roster from Jasaitis’s time at the club.

Head coach Aleksandar Trifunovic coached Caja Laboral prospect Nemanja Bjelica last season at Crvena Zvezda Belgrade.

Khalid El-Amin has scored in double figures in seven straight Euroleague games.

El-Amin sank a buzzer-beating triple to beat Caja Laboral 86-89 last month in Spain. He was also the Sportingbet weekly co-MVP after that game with a performance index rating of 29.

Game notes, Caja Laboral

Marcelinho Huertas was the Sportingbet Top 16 Week 5 MVP after recording 18 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals for a performance index rating of 30 last week against Unicaja.

Marcelinho was Sportingbet weekly co-MVP with an index rating of 29 when Laboral played Lietuvos Rytas last month in Spain.

Marcelinho is the most accurate three-point shooter in the Top 16 with 9 triples in 12 tries (75%).

Mirza Teletovic has been a teammate of Lietuvos Rytas big man Kenan Bajramovic on the Bosnia-Herzegovina national team. They led Bosnia at EuroBasket 2003 and ’05.

Teletovic is averaging the best numbers in his Euroleague career to date with 15.9 points and 5.1 rebounds per game.

Teletovic’s 3 three-pointers made this season are the most of any player in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague.

Caja Laboral has made more three-pointers (129) than any other Euroleague team this season.

Fernando San Emeterio has made at least 1 three-pointer in nine straight Euroleague appearances.

Pau Ribas and Lietuvos Rytas sharpshooter Simas Jasaitis were teammates for the 2008-09 season at DKV Joventut.

Quotes Head Coaches

TRIFUNOVIC, ALEKSANDAR
Lietuvos Rytas
"We are awaiting a powerful opponent in current Spanish League champion Caja Laboral. The motivation is really high. We will try to fight and try to create Lietuvos Rytas history. We will see whether they have Mirza Teletovic, but we are preparing to compete against the full team. I think that the way Caja Laboral plays, no one player’s injury can dramatically change the situation. We also have a problem. Martynas Gecevicius has not trained at full strength and DJ.Strawberry was ill. I hope that all my players will be ready on Thursday."
IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Caja Laboral
"Both Mirza Teletovic and Pape Sow will travel to Lithuania even though they have not been practicing with the team. There, we will see whether they are fit to play or not. But we do not think about these problems we have, we think it is a game that we have a chance to win against a complicated team with good, talented big men, shooting forwards and a determines guard like El-Amin, who knows how to take responsibility in money tmie. We are a big team and we must play with patience and concentration to win this game. On top of that, all the players will have to give their best effort."

Players

EL-AMIN, KHALID
Lietuvos Rytas
"On Thursday we face an extraordinary do or die game . We feel good, because we will play at home. We know that it will be a war, so we will have to fight for all 40 minutes. Of course, I remember that three-pointer in Spain, but on Thursday it will be different game. The fact that we can change the team's history is something we use as a motivational tool. Of course we want to leave our imprint on team history, so we will try hard to achieve this goal."
SAN EMETERIO, FERNANDO
Caja Laboral
"It is a make or break game for both teams. We both know that the first place of the group is at stake and I am sure we will all give it all on court. Lietuvos Rytas is a team with experienced players who know how to open the court and will also have huge support from their fans. We must play with patience, making good shot selection and pushing hard in defense. We must stay focused to avoid unnecessary turnovers and therefore maintain our options for the win."

Fernando San Emeterio - Caja LaboralCaja Laboral became the Group E champion with a tough 68-77 road win over Lietuvos Rytas at Siemens Arena in the Lithuanian capital, eliminating the home team from the playoff along the way. A brilliant effort from Fernando San Emeterio – 19 points, 11 rebounds and 8 fouls drawn – lifted the Spanish champs to victory in a do-or-die clash. The game was close with the host tying the score early in the fourth quarter, but Laboral continued to play at an elite level and despite the never-ending support of a sold-out arena, Rytas seemed to run out of steam. Rytas finished Group E with a 4-2 record and will have home-court advantage when it faces Maccabi Electra in the best-of-five Quarterfinal Playoffs. David Logan added 15 points for the winners, Stanko Barac scored 13, Mirza Teletovic 12 and Marcelinho Huertas 10. Rytas dropped to 3-3 and missed the playoffs by one win. The Lithuanian champs got 14 points from Kenan Bajramovic, while Milko Bjelica added 13 and Jonas Valanciunas capped a promising rookie season with 9 points and 11 rebounds.

After a packed Siemens Arena greeted the teams, it was Laboral that opened the scoring as Logan penetrated. Simas Jasaitis stepped up with a corner triple immediately, but the visitors ran fast as Teletovic added two consecutive long-range jumpers and both Logan and San Emeterio converted threes to complete a 0-10 run for a 3-12 start. A much-needed timeout helped Rytas as Bjelica dunked, but Laboral simply couldn't miss. Red-hot Teletovic sank another jumper and San Emeterio added a triple for an early double-digit lead, 7-17. Defense just didn't work for Rytas as Laboral had already scored 21 points in seven minutes. Finally the hosts seemed to wake up as Brad Newley got to the rim, but Laboral stayed safe and widened its lead to 13-27. Fresh-off-the-bench Bajramovic nailed a triple to end a confusing quarter for Lietuvos Rytas.

Milko Bjelica - Lietuvos RytasMartynas Gecevicius opened the second quarter with a jumper and, after Valanciunas added a layup, the game was on, 20-27. Caja Laboral needed a quick timeout as Gecevicius penetrated for a basket-plus-foul. The break didn't help as the visiting team was still stuck on the offensive end. Rytas was no better, though, missing open threes and turning the ball over. Finally, DJ Strawberry ended three minutes of draught by sinking a jumper off a steal by Gecevicius. Bajramovic then shortened the gap even more, but Esteban Batista calmly converted free throws and Teletovic nailed a triple to calm the visitors' nerves, 26-32. Khalid El-Amin scored his first points, but Logan stepped up with another bomb from downtown. After Pape Sow made free-throws and stretched Laboral’s lead to 28-37, Rytas needed a timeout. The gameplay then slowed down a bit but the hosts soon pushed harder and cut the deficit to a single point after a layup-plus-foul by Bjelica and a dunk by Bajramovic. Huertas and Strawberry exchanged free-throws and locked the halftime score at 39-40.

Barac used his height to open up the second half with a layup, but Bajramovic did the same. Newley even dunked to give Rytas its first and, as it turned out later, only lead of the game, 43-42, but couldn't stop San Emeterio and Logan. The latter converted two difficult shots to regain the initiative for Laboral at 43-48. Bjelica stepped up with a shot of his own, but San Emeterio struck again with back-to-back baskets-plus-fouls as only Bajramovic interrupted in between, 47-54. El-Amin broke the silence after a timeout with a layup and Bajramovic added a free throw to get Rytas a little closer. Valanciunas and Batista exchanged baskets and Gecevicius nailed a three, but a cool San Emeterio answered with free-throws, leaving the intrigue for the decisive quarter, 55-58.

Strawberry exploded with a three to open the last 10 minutes and tie the score, but Batista got Caja Laboral back on track with a layup. A red-hot Strawberry stayed on fire as he dunked, but the visitors hit back with a nifty 2-9 run after triples by Huertas and Barac and a free-throw by San Emeterio to make it 62-69. With five minutes left, Lietuvos Rytas needed to act quickly and did as Valanciunas sank a layup. However, San Emeterio got to the rim once more to regain a 7-point advantage. Bjelica got the hosts closer with a fastbreak penetration, but Teletovic nailed a huge three, giving Caja Laboral a more than comfortable 66-74 lead with less than two minutes on the clock. Bjelica managed to cut the gap quickly but the hosts couldn't grab important offensive rebounds and all hopes were lost soon.

Head Coaches

TRIFUNOVIC, ALEKSANDAR
Lietuvos Rytas
"We are ending our performance in the Euroleague tonight. However, I am extremely proud of my team: we made all the needed steps to reach the quarterfinals but the last one. We simply lost to a better and more experienced team tonight."
IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Caja Laboral
"We started the game very good. Later we suddenly stopped playing a couple of times but stepped up just in time. El-Amin is a very determined player and he did miracles in Vitoria. But we prepared to play against him tonight and effectively shut him down. I think our defense was the key tonight."

Players

BJELICA, MILKO
Lietuvos Rytas
"The main reason behind this loss was the beginning of the game. They ran away and we spent a lot of energy to come back. We did but that wasn't enough. At the end of the game, we made some stupid mistakes too. Basically, Caja Laboral is a much more experienced team, their players have already had big games in the past. We won some great games this season. It's a pity we are out of the competition but now we have to get on with it and concentrate on our home league games."
BABRAUSKAS, STEPONAS
Lietuvos Rytas
"Such is life, you win some, you lose some. We started the game very poorly and that cost us dearly. We came back later but couldn't hold on. I think we were under a bit of pressure because this was a do-or-die situation."
SAN EMETERIO, FERNANDO
Caja Laboral
"We played great defense. We started the game really focused and managed to run the break and then played good defense in the fourth quarter. I tried to help my team and things went well, I had a good game, but the most important thing is that we managed to make it to the Quarterfinals. If we play good defense just as we did tonight, we can make it to the Final Four."
