THE TAKE

If a game can have crunch time, a season can have crunch games, and none will be crunchier than the best-of-five Euroleague Finals between Kinder Bologna and Tau Ceramica beginning Tuesday night in Bologna. All signs would indicate that two teams accustomed to nothing but success lately should take the long view on this series. Don't be surprised if on May 10, everyone is back in Bologna for Game 5 and that no one will sit much that whole night in Palamalaguti Arena. That's how close these two finalists seem to be, once you balance up tangibles and intangibles. Kinder has depth, speed and balance. Tau is quick, cool and concentrated. Kinder is brawny. Tau is brash. Kinder has steamrolled. Tau has struck like lightning. All eyes now are on Kinder center Rashard Griffith, who was rumored to come back just 8 days after knee surgery to try to play in Game 1. "A decision on Rashard will be made on Tuesday afternoon," Kinder coach Ettore Messina said Monday evening. Tau's missing person, point guard Chris Corchiani, was joking Sunday about returning for Game 3, just two weeks after hernia surgery. Do you think those guys are anxious to get some playing time in this series? They know that the slightest edge could push either team over the top. If there is a Game 5, as suspected, don't be surprised to see both of them there, on the floor at the finish.

Griffith and his injury are big factors not just because of his averages (15.8 points, 8.7 rebounds) during the playoffs. Tau center Victor Alexander is right there with him (14.1, 7.0), and offsets Griffith's youthful edge with his own in experience. That isn't to say that Griffith is unexperienced. Quite the contrary. Griffith is a factor because he is used to winning, his whole career. Since coming to Europe four seasons ago, Griffith has not lost a domestic league title. Kinder sacrificed to sign Griffith not because of his numbers, but because he wins.

Corchiani may be a backup, but rarely has a 15-minute man so affected a seven-game playoff winning streak. Tau was losing big until Corchiani calmed the waters in both quarterfinal games against Olympiakos. Tau ended up winning by comfortable margins. In the semifinals against AEK, he played less, but seemed to accomplish just as much. He was the poster boy for Tau's refusal to get rattled for any reason.

Corchiani's absence is even more important because of Kinder's incredible backcourt depth. Tau must begin the series with just three guards, and one of them, Mindaugas Timinskas, may be face duty at small forward. He, Elmer Bennett and Laurent Foirest will have to play without fouling much, so expect Tau to start the series by showing zones or otherwise testing Kinder's perimeter shooters. Let them test Antoine Riguadeau. He won't be shy. His forte is big shots in big games.

At small forward, a classic shooter vs. scorer matchup between Saulius Stombergas of Tau and Manuel Ginobili of Kinder will be one of the thrills of the series. Stombergas scored 39 points in one memorable semifinal game by nailing 9 of 9 three-pointers that he squeezed off instantaneously. Nobody but nobody can stop Stombergas if he shoots that well and that quickly. But Ginobili poses as much danger as a driver, and has been more consistently unstoppable than Stombergas. Ginobili has diversified into a three-point threat himself this spring. He hit huge game-winning threes in both of Kinder's quarterfinal victories against Union Olimpija. His defense has impressive, too, but he has yet to face a gunslinger like Stombergas.

As in any series, Game 1 may hinge on nerves, most notably those of three young forwards: Matjaz Smodis and David Andersen of Kinder, and Luis Scola of Tau. While Kinder's youngsters split scarce minutes, Scola graduated to almost 20 per game in the semis, averaging 9.3 points and 6 rebounds, per-minute totals better than any Kinder big man except Griffith. Scola comes off the bench for Tau. If Griffith is out, Kinder's young guys will be expected to help deal with Alexander and Fabricio Oberto before ever getting to Scola. Oberto can sway this series. If he can keep up a rebounding pace second only to Griffith among the finalists, Tau's chances improve like those of any team who dominates the boards. Tau has done so against serious rebounding opponents, Olympiakos and AEK, proving that Oberto & Co. are not easily intimidated.

Last, but far from least, is the point guard matchup, Marko Jaric of Kinder against Elmer Bennett of Tau, two major stars for whom minutes may mean alot. Jaric has backups to help him stay fresh and strong, while Bennett will now be expected to play 40 minutes. One school of thought says fresh players, especially those of such quality as Kinder's backcourt, can wear down an opponent. Another says on a main stage like the Euroleague Finals, adrenaline of the kind Bennett always plays with

Quotes Head Coaches

MESSINA, ETTORE
Kinder Bologna
"We come here in good shape, but we're missing a player who is the key to our offensive and defensive systems. Rashard is not only a scorer but he helps our game develop, forcing double teams that he passes out of, and forcing the other team to adjust to us. We saw against Benetton that without Rashard we can suffer rebounding, but we have our three young guys, Anderson, Smodis and Jestraatijevic, and along with Alessandro Frosini they are gong to have to come together and help."

"People ask if we have to win two at home, but I believe that in five-game series, one way or another, you have to win one game away in order to survive."

"I don't believe we have the pressure to win or else. We had a three-year plan to compete for these kinds of titles, and now that we are here in the first year, we will try to take advantage of it. Now we'll see how these players react. They are playing in the Finals and nobody knows how they will react until they play. We'll discover it together as we go a long, game by game."
IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Tau Ceramica
"The first thing that we have to make clear is that we have a chance to win. We must have faith in our chances. We must believe in our way of playing offense and defense. And we have to think that we can win in five games. It doesn't matter to me that we win the first, the second or the fifth, but we must win one game in Bologna...Griffith doens't interest me. Maybe he won't play, but it doesn't matter to me. Kinder is a very complete team and doesn't depend on one player."

Players

GINOBILI, EMANUEL
Kinder Bologna
"On paper, we may have better individuals but I think we play less as a team than Tau. To me, this is going to be a hard series, and I think it's going to be a long one, too. I'm not worried about Stombergas hitting 9 of 9 three-pointers. They have Bennett, too, and inside Alexander, Oberto and Scola, who never seems to tire, but their individuals don't worry us so much as how they play as a team."
SMODIS, MATJAZ
Kinder Bologna
"I have a lot of respect for Tau, especially for their strong defense. You have to recognize that the injury to Corchiani can favor us if we know how to pressure Bennett and force hijmto committ fouls. If we stop Bennett, half our work will be done."
GRIFFITH, RASHARD
Kinder Bologna
"It's up to the coaches whether I play on Tuesday, or we wait until Thursday to try the knee. They'll decide on Tuesday, and I'm waiting on their decision just like everyone else. As for the series, we have to take advantage of the homecourt we worked all season to gain. We'll try to get on one the road, but we know if we stay strong at home, at least we'll be back here for Game 5. Tau is a different team from ours. They play together as a team and don't have the one-on-one players we have. But they've got Elmer Bennett who makes his teammates better. We're going to see the best of both teams and I think it'll come down to the small things. Every championship series I've ever been in has come down to the small things."
BENNETT, ELMER
Tau Ceramica
"It doesn't matter if I have to play one minute or 40. Winning is what has to be done. Our coach says fatigue doesn't exist, and maybe he's right...The key isn't winning a game in Bologna, but to win the next game. And that first game is Tuesday. I'm only thinking about the first one."
STOMBERGAS, SAULIUS
Tau Ceramica
"I'm motivated and I have some things to prove in Bologna"
"I've saved some three-pointers for Kinder."
OBERTO, FABRICIO
Tau Ceramica
"The first game can be decisive because it marks the momentum. Our objective is to leavue Bologna 1-1, but we really want to win the first game, if possible. We won the first one in the three other series and it gave us confidence. You don't play a Finals every year, so there is no such thing as tiredness now."
Victor Alexander - Tau Ceramica - Euroleague 2000-01 There is only one undefeated team left in the Euroleague playoffs, and it is not Kinder Bologna. Say hello to the new Euroleague Finals favorite, Tau Ceramica of Spain, who took over early in Bologna on Tuesday and finished with a huge 65-78 victory in Game 1. Just like that, exactly as it had done in three other playoff rounds, Tau stole back the homecourt advantage in the series opener. As always, Tau gave a classic team effort, but it was Victor Alexander with 21 points and 19 rebounds who showed the way, especially as Tau opened leads of up to 21 points in the middle quarters. Alexander thrived in the absence of injured center Rashard Griffith of Kinder, but for much of the game, Tau was without its best rebounder, Fabricio Oberto, who drew four fouls in as many minutes to start the game. "I was just prepared to play," Alexander said right after the game. "It didn't matter to me if Rashard was there or not, since I'm going to play as hard as I can against everyone. But I'm sure Kinder missed him some." Griffith is expected back for Game 2 on Thursday, also in Bologna. but Kinder will also have to deal by then with Laurent Foirest, who scored 20 points and held Emanuel Ginobili, who fouled out early, to 8. Ginobili will be back with his best game on Thursday, of course. Things are just getting serious.

The Game 1 analysis has to start with one statistic that Alexander had a lot to do with, total rebounds: Tau 50 Kinder 33. Besides Alexander's mother lode of 19, Foirest had 7, playmaker Elmer Bennett had 5, and 20-year-old Luis Scola, pressed into early, important duty by Oberto's foul trouble, had 5 more. For Kinder, frontcourt starters David Alexander and Alessandro Frosini had 8 and 7, respectively , but if any of those came with Alexander nearby, a witness would be hard to find. Although the edge in offensive rebounds was only 13-12 for Tau, its offense ran so crisply, hitting 45 percent of two-pointers (20 of 44) and 40 percent of threes (6 for 15), that few extra shots were needed. Another key was the play off the bench of Mindaugas Timinskas, who entered jin the second quarter to help boost Tau's the lead into double digits, where it stayed almost the rest of the game. Timinskas finished with 11 points. And of course, there was Bennett, who played all 40 minutes as expected, and finished with 15 points. For Kinder, Marko Jaric had 14 points some of those as the lead was trimmed at the end, but never enough to alarm Tau or to make the Palamalguti crowd. This one was in the visitors' hands early, and they held on as tightly as possible.

Marko Jaric - Kinder Bologna - Euroleague 2000-01Tau flexed its defensive muscles from the beginning, with a steal to start the game by Saulius Stombergas, who was matched with Antoine Rigaudeau, leaving Foirest to guard the ever-hot Ginobili. But it was Foirest's three-pointer on the first possession that stood as the only basket for several minutes as both teams hunkered down to defense. In those same minutes, however, as Tau's lead inched to 1-5, the refs put some limits on how tough the defenders could be. The warning was as clear as this: 4 fouls called on Tau power forward Fabricio Oberto in the first four minutes. That put Scola, the visitors' premier frontline sub, right into the fire, but just as soon, some of the pressure was off, as Ginobili was called for a second foul and sent to the bench. His sub, Alessandro Abbio, loosened things up by sinking Kinder's first three-pointer, which made it 8-9. A three-point play on a drive by Stombergas reestablished a small advantage that Tau nursed through the end of the quarter, but a drive by Marko Jaric cut the deficit after 10 minutes to 14-18.

That Jaric layup could have served as a warning. Kinder had toyed with a zone earlier, but now it sprung a full-court press that reaped two quick steals that served to take a short lead, 20-18, a couple minutes into the second quarter. But presses only work well after baskets, and Kinder was about to go a long time without any of those. Over the next seven minutes, Tau took complete control with a 21-2 run that simply stunned the 8,278 denizens of Palamalguti arena. Everyone took part for Tau: Bennett with a big three-pointer, Scola with back-to-back baskets that included a soaring dunk, Timinskas and Foirest with consecutive three-pointers.

It was Alexander, however, working like a champ under the boards, that made everything work. His baskets started and ended the run, and in between he gave Tau three more extra possessions on offensive rebounds. Needless to say, not many defensive boards escaped him, either. Tau's lead was an incredible 22-39 when Jaric broke the ice with a three-pointer for Kinder, but after five more points from young David Anderson, Griffith's replacement in the starting lineup, Alexander ended the half with a three-point play on a fastbreak pass that ricocheted off Scola. Tau not only had the force with it, but a little bit of the luck that coaches all say is needed, in this case to end the half with a 30-46 lead.

Elmer Bennett - Tau Ceramica - Euroleague 2000-01Incredibly enough, Alexander ended the half with more rebounds (13) than the whole Kinder team (11). He also led all scorers with 13 points, followed by 10 from Foirest, who held Ginobili to just 2 in the whole half. Without checking the record books, its safe to say that Kinder has rarely been treated so roughly on its home floor as in the first half on Tuesday. And if anyone was counting, Tau had more points at 46 than anyone would have expected, either. Though no one was forgetting Kinder's comeback ability, as proven in making up 18 points in the final quarter of its last semifinal game, in one half the dynamic of the Euroleague Finals had already changed.

Kinder was still down 39-57 when it made its best run, 8 unanswered points that cut the lead to 59-47 late in the third quarter. But in the final two minutes, two free throws each by Bennett and Foirest, plus a final bucket by Alexander, restored the margin to 16 points at 49-65. The margin dwindled in the fourth quarter to as few as nine points, but that was in the final 90 seconds, and a defense that held Kinder down all night wasn't about to give up then.

Head Coaches

MESSINA, ETTORE
Kinder Bologna
"We paid for the inexperience of our young players playing their first Finals. I hope to have Griffith tomorrow at practice. His absence was really important for our outside shooters. Usually we see double teams and easy shots from those. We didn't have easy shots or easy rebounds the whole game. We played real bad. I am the first one responsible and I have to overcome our weaknesses. We tried zone defense, full-court press, but our main trouble tonight was to develop an effective offense. I'm sure my players, who played well all season, will have something more to say the rest of the series. I don't know if we'll win, but we'll play better for sure."
IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Tau Ceramica
"The first game is always the most difficult for the home team. We won thanks to our defensive job. We have just won the first game. We need two more to be champions. We have confidence from this victory for the rest of the series. We certainly took advantage of Rashard Griffith's absence, but also we had Oberto with four fouls after four minutes. We don't just win on the road. We have a great defensive attitude, and for that reason, we can always have a chance to win whereever we are. The next game will be the key of the series."

Players

RIGAUDEAU, ANTOINE
Kinder Bologna
"We know that we faced a strong team with a great defense and we never found good offensive options. Also, without Rashard there, it was going to be a difficult game. But even with him it will be difficult against them. We lacked outside shooting and we played a bad inside-outside game."
ABBIO, ALESSANDRO
Kinder Bologna
"They play tough defense. We never used our speed to overcome it. We dribbled too much and we didn't circulate the ball well. We need to react on Thursday. We trust in ourselves, but we need to trust ourselves from the start of the game."
ALEXANDER, VICTOR
Tau Ceramica
"Definitely anytime we want to win a big game like this, I think the team needs a big game from me and especially a big game under the boards. The whole team played well, with a lot of confidence. I know it's not going to be easy in Game 2, because Kinder is a great team that knows how to win. They'll be back. I was just prepared to play. It didn't matter to me if Rashard was there or not, since I'm going to play as hard as I can against everyone. But I'm sure Kinder missed him, but hey, nobody was going to feel sorry for us if the shoe was on the other foot, either."
